I find it endlessly amusing with all the technology we have that all we can seem to make is synthesizers - why hasnt anyone made a new instrument in like 200 years?

post suggestions or maybe instruments that noone has ever heard of..

I'd like a dreamoscope - you stick it on your head and it converts your dreams into music - how cool would that be :P

I think something like that has been done, but it was invented by some pervy German guy who invented it to "hear what the brain was saying" during sex.

I'd like to see the holphoner from Futurama actually work.

I'm still waiting for instruments such as the triangle and the oboe. If these actually exist already, then I'm not sure what you could create.

We could be looking at history in the making with the first electric Troboe. It's genious.

We could always try and splice bagpipes and the accordion, as well.

There have been new instruments in the past 200 years. Electric guitars (electric anything, actually) are a good example. Granted, these aren't entirely 'new' instrument, but I look at it like the difference between a harpsicord and a piano. Instruments evolve, they aren't really "invented". It takes time to develop an instrument, but new ones are being made. In general though, they are either manipulations of household items (percussion blender and vaccums, for instance), or electric instruments. There just isn't enough of an audience to make mainstream news.

There are so many sounds which were invented that we're to the point of searching for years for new sounds. I'll take for example the IRCAM (it's a french organisation making research for new sounds). They don't try to make new instruments since this became something really difficult to make. So they create sounds with the technology.

All instruments come down to sinewaves and resonance. All waves are made up of sinewaves made into different textures. So:

If you want a brand new sound, there is nothing further to go, electronics can push it, but as far as physical instruments go for making sounds, we've reached our limit in my opinion.

thats bull - and I insult myself by saying this - but anyone can make a variety of sounds on a computer - but that doesnt give them life - and as for creating new instruments - people just arent trying hard enough!

Are you only realizing how many instruments there are throughout the world? Winds, Strings, percussions. There are SOOO many variations of instruments already existing. The only way to make really new instruments is to invent a type of instrument. But, do you have just one idea of a new type of instrument? There are already the winds, the strings, the percussions, the brasses and those i forget. Is there a possibility of innovating?

Of course there is, but we can't use old terms to describe new instruments. We'd have to make up a whole new word for this type of instrument for it to be completely new and original!

With percussion you hit (drums) or press ( piano), with woodwinds you blow (flute), with strings you pluck (guitar) or rub (violin). So first we need a new action.. which involves contact..

...

Bah, I got nothing, you can fart... but the ass is a very old instrument, not a new one. You can think... we can have a machine that reads our auditory cortex and takes whatever we make up in our head and turns it into an mp3..

...

I KNOW! WE CAN BLINK! Some machine will read our blinks like morse code and play the corresponding notes! We'll call it... blinky!

Yes, yes it would. It monitors electrical impulses the brain gives off, so you thinking of something sexy will make music just as well ;).

what about a device that can alter your voice so you could sing like anyone? Just imagine.. no more recruiting vocalists!

that's not really new tho..

and we dont have any instruments that involve sucking.. and no.. no penis jokes please.. :P

and what about sounds in space? I mean have we ever HEARD sounds in the presence of zero gravity? How would normal instruments sound with differing parameters - like more or less gravity?

maybe an instrument that uses light?

Hi Peeps!

Couldn't help but notice all this talk about new instruments, and having read through this thread, remembered reading about a new variation on the guitar, or rather the type of strings used for a new type of guitar

Now it's not exactly new! but a variation on an old style instrument, if you know what i mean

anyway this shit is fucked up, it's a Y stringed guitar http://www.acoustics..ess/151st/Leger.html

Have a look though if you like, it's really messed up

Peace Out

Stealth!
