That's probably one of the most ridiculous arguments out there.

No way man, Namco is smart for getting a patent for something like this. If you've learned anything about this history of animation you'll know that the people who got patents were the ones who's companies grew the biggest snd became most successful. When the patent for the peg bar came out and the patent for the clear layers of animating technique thing all other companies were sued to hell and forced to stop what they were doing. Namco knows whats up, and if this becomes a problem, then they are going to make a whole lot of money.

Of course, I DO agree with you that it is unfortunate and sucks for all of us who were planning on implementing something like this in the future.

I heard about the preloader games patent a while ago.. if you want to put a game in your preloader then do it, if Namco happen to contact you about it then remove it simple as that. Won't happen though.

Its hard to come back after being gone for such a long time. Eventually you simply dont feel at home anymore. But, life moves on. : P

Never knew what to make of that situation. Ozcar's reason for banning him was stupid shit, but so was the reaction. Ah well. Let bygones be bygones.

So... it's a good thing that we had less people doing good animation?

Look - this is blatantly ridiculous. Imagine if I got a patent out on the basic incrementing fallspeed jumping system, or on moving blocks - fuck it, why not just patent platformer games as a whole?

This sort of thing is abuse of the patent and copyright system of the worst kind - it's exactly this kind of thing which lets assholes justify themselves in making money out of piracy, or stealing somebody's work against the author's wishes. We're never going to get respect for the rights of developers when you have guys doing shit like this.

Uh, it seems you conveniently edited out the part of my post where I said that I DID AGREE and that it is UNFORTUNATE. I never said it was the right thing to do but it is true that the people that scored the patents DID end up having control over very valuable material. It is most definitely abuse.

I know very little about how the patent system works, but seems like you can get one for just about anything. I have a friend that patented a CD he made in about a week...why he spent the money to go through the tedious process, I don't know, but now if someones wants to use one of his tracks (another unlikely option) they would have to pay for it. (after I wrote this I realized it might have been a copywritten thing he got...I can't remember, can you patent a song? I confused myself)

But, now I honestly don't know this, can you patent something like platformer design? Is that even possible? The ability to patent something is great, but where is the line (is there one?) drawn? Has anyone else gotten anything patented?

actionscript
yeah I really suck at this.

I have to make an "interactive" animation for my current project at uni. Im fine with the animating part but I suck at actionscript, and thought I may as well try and learn some more and get more out of the project.

Anyway i decided to add a little "first person shooter" bit to the animation. you cant move or walk around or anything, you just click the enemies and they die. Im stuck though. Ive got it working so the gun follows the mouse, theres a timer etc, but there are some problems.

You can only kill an enemy if you click on him. So you cant hold down shoot and drag it accross him.
I tried to fix this using this, but it doesnt work:

onMouseDown = function () {
		shooting = true;
		gun.gotoAndStop(2);
}

onMouseUp = function () {
		shooting = false;
		gun.gotoAndStop(1);
};

if(shooting = true){
	enemy.onPress = function(){
	kill(enemy1)
}
	enemy2.onPress = function(){
	kill(enemy2)}
};

Im also trying to make it so you can only "kill" an enemy once. So at the moment the "kill" functon runs:

function kill(enemyname) {
	enemyname.gotoAndPlay(2);
	kills += 1;
}

But you can just click each enemy more than once and get the kill count. Whats the best way of detecting when a enemy is dead, apart from creating a boolean and function for EVERY enemy?

I know im using noob actionscript and i suck, im just learning :3

Oop, sorry about that. I was in a bit of a rush this morning - I guess I misinterpreted what you were saying there.

What surely would be in everyone's best interests, though, would be reliably documenting features instead of patenting them, so if someone else did try to patent them then you'd have proof that you were there first.

Mod Rivalry

I refuse to believe that you mods don't compete against each other - not even a little bit. Who can come up with the wittiest "final post" when locking a thread? Who's the most helpful? Who bans/locks the most? I bet you mods are constantly striving to separate yourselves from, what I like to call, Mod Limbo.

On top of that, do the Mods of various forums compete against the others in West Side Story-esque musical numbers and gang fights? Luis, BMK, Kirk and jmtb02 against all the general mods in a fight to the first blood (that was a metaphor).

I'd be interested to know the underlying tensions and little-known secrets which surround those enigmas bestowed with modship. Go on, tell us what REALLY happens in the Mod's forums.

Never forget...
