Or pump out a flash game every 1-2 weeks, which uses my skills and probably makes more cash but isn't something to add to a job application.

When we (at my day job, not Dim and I) hire flash developers, it's all about two things. If they're good people we'd enjoy working with, and their portfolio. The more examples of work, and the more varied the better. I'd say if you want to be a developer, pumping out a lot of different games would be a pretty good way to bolster your portfolio :)

I was reading nintendo power just a minute ago and saw that there was an interview with edmund mcmillen and tommy refenes about super meat boy. I checked online and found this on edmund's blog.

INRIA was awesome. It was our first day so we didn't do much besides listen to some guy talk about algorithms, brain studies, and computers in history, but it was still incredibly more fun and informative than school. For thursday I have to make a presentation on algorithms and the Turing machine. It looks like it would be really cool to work in a place like that

Toast: cool! But you'd have to work with the kind of programming languages that I like at INRIA. :p

You know what? There's this other language that has had a scripting engine since forever. And a runtime AVM2 bytecode compiler. What was it called? I think it had like a capital X in it in the middle. Hmm.

That's what I thought, but they didn't even mention Caml. We're a group of 9, and 4 of them chose programming (to my surprise) so our tour guide told them to write a simple program in Java, using "Java's cool". I'll ask them if we can see an example of some of the work they're doing in OCaml.

Before I went there, I didn't think I would be interested in programming languages since I already have some considerable experience and I would get bored if they teach us a language from scratch. I read about the P=NP complexity class problem and it was really interesting, so I thought they probably do some work on that since they have a lot of research teams in algorithms. But it might actually be a good idea to learn a new language, or maybe learn more about Python. For now I'll probably just write some pathfinding algorithm in flash.

Could I go somehow sometime?

If you ever come to France I have to meet you. You can walk to the INRIA from my home in 10 minutes, or 2 minutes in a bus. I live in an area where a lot of hi-tech company have settled because it's relatively cheap and the geographical location is very convenient. You can find loads of research centers here.
It would be very interesting if you came to the INRIA, I'm sure you would have a lot to learn from them, and I think you would enjoy working there although I don't think you're planning on getting a job in france :P

They also have very interesting research in robotics, I got to see a robot in progress, with all sorts of hard drives and computer components sticking out of his body.

I wasnt really commenting on the actual music, in that video they set the world record for the biggest circle pit. It was actually more like an olympic sprint, but still damn good fun :D

The most wonderfully fucked up band of the weekend was undoubtably Meshuggah. Ive never seen anything so relentless and technically mind blowing. If anyone knows anything about time signatures, the drummers arms are doing 4/4 and his legs 13/16. Apparently he had to practise for 6 months to be able to play the song live. When they played it, he had to go off stage and let his drum tech play the next so because its so bloody hard. Anyway yeah, those guys are mental.

I think you mean haXe, you're losing your touch old man.

But seriously, that looks cool.. they even have for.. in which BISE does not. Not that it's going to make me use it, but still nice ;)

Does anyone know if you can link to a certain page on NG from your site and still get the referral registered in the fan-net? Just adding "/refer/knugen" to the URL doesn't seem to work, and I've tried "/?refer=knugen" as well, so I suspect that the code that handles referrals is on the index-page only :/

I'm not sure if this is really worth the effort to get high up on the 'Fan-net', but still :)

Yeah, I think they had a drumming contest on
youtube to see who could play Bleed better.
My friend listens to Meshuggah, it's some messed up stuff. :3

I love listening to harder music like that, but at
some point my taste in it just plateaus; everything
above my limit just sounds terrible.
Meshuggah as an example... I cant imagine anybody
listening to it and liking it, without having a jealousy
over the skill of the people in the band.

Looking for coder

I have a pretty fleshed out idea and probably could code it myself but I what it done as right as possible because I think it has the potential to be quite lucrative.

This isn't for the power of 3 or anything, it's just a straight up make a game and get it sponsored type situation.

It will probably help you if you already have made some sort of platformer engine, the game is part platformer.

I can provide more information about the project to anyone who is interested

I have a chopped up Guitar Hero World Tour drum set, vivisected from it's pads by a nice person in the States. It has a port on the back for MIDI in that works with my DTXT3 electronic drum kit.

I'm now playing Rock Band and GH:Metallica on the worlds most expensive video game controller.

I don't get what's all the big excitement with this power of three thing. It's just an excuse to make you feel special. If you want to make a flash, make it. I don't need people to tell me I have the "power" to make flashes.

no its just that you get more publicity from it, so it gives your game a better chance to fail or do good. plus the better you do, the more your game is publicized, and then the more money you make from it, and for charity.

i wouldn't be surprised if this becomes some people's tickets to NG fame.

Exactly what both Fluff and Toast said. it's not like you're working alongside Newrgounds or anything like that, it's just like making a game. This is my first time doing sprites for a game, but I had really wanted to before, only that I didn't know if I should, I think this event is mainly for this purpose, but everyone is too damn excited about it so we might aswell play along, you get way more coverage than standard games.

Yes, it does. I need to sort out the sensitivity triggers for the hi-hat so I can play Blue when it's open and Yellow when it's closed (at the moment it's detecting i want it open too late). And other than the fact the rock band tracks have you bounce around the kit quite quickly and the complete disassociation with colour from location that I need to get ingrained its working quite well for me.

In other news, I think I'm using Tweener too much on the journal section...
