Left School

I've effectively finished school now, it's an odd feeling. The thing that has given me "purpose" and a direction to go in has suddenly gone, all that's left now is my exams. I'm not feeling the excitement or relaxation that i presumed i would have, all i can think about is how to start the rest of my life.

Anyone else have a similar experience, or am i just a sad bastard.

Thats normal - happened to me when I left Uni. Take a good few days to take in the sights and sounds of a world where you lack responsibilities and then try to set a course for your new life goal

Ive had a similar feeling when i graduated high school. It didnt sink in until it was like september and i was lookin from kitchen window and watching the kids go off to their first day of school and realizing i was done with that. I hated pretty much everyone in high school and i still totally do. It was probably the worst time of my life but a part of me DID/DOES miss it... i still find that strange.

Yeah i don't miss it, it was just more straightforward, turn up, work, get grades, etc. Now i've got to get off my arse and think what i want to do. Plus, every single one of my mates is going to a different college, so we'll gradually drift out of touch as time goes by, which is kind of depressing after knowing someone for 11 years of your life.

Oh highschool, how I loved it. I wouldn't mind going back 6 years in my life right now. Anyway, before school ended I had already planned and paid for my 6 month backpackingtrip through Australia and New-Zealand, so you could say I had a pretty clear goal ahead of me (at least on the short term). I had to work my ass off trying to get a nice amount of money together. After I got back from that I was used to living from day to day without any real direction, so it took some time settling back into my normal routines. I had half a year left which I spent on looking for a good university and course to follow and work to pay of my debts :) Now I'm focussing on finishing this school year with some good results.

I wouldn't mind living without any long-term plans or direction at all. Just travelling around for a few years sounds great.... No responsibilities and nothing to worry about. Too bad that's not very realistic.

So far I think I enjoyed high school more than college. Sure, I'm learning a ton more in college than I ever hoped to in high school, but high school was more lively especially being in the band and all. College sorta takes a back seat to my personal game development though. This is the time where we're supposed to start building a career, too many people I know waited till school was out to start thinking about a job or building a name, and they get stuck unemployed for quite a bit after school before taking the first job they can get: coding the HUD on some shooting game.

Not that I want a real job, but going independent requires a lot more work to get started than getting a job since you need all sorts of connections and business relationships to get anywhere, so I'm taking advantage of the fact that I don't need a job while in college to build my name and work on projects.

You hear how stuff like Braid cost 180k out of Jon Blow's pocket to make? Or see the estimations on how much 2Dboy spent making World of Goo? Most of that is living expenses (essentially what they don't make by not having jobs). I wouldn't have a job while in college anyway, so I'm not losing anything by working on a big project like that instead of having a real job.

Although college students DO know how to throw fun parties. All it takes is a friend over 21 and a little money, and the fun practically makes itself. And rock band.

thank god im still in high school then, the way you guys are moping about it.

yay im gonna be taking all these awesome classes next year!
ICT 11: programming and robotics (Javascript and robots),

ICT 11: digital media (learning how to combine flash and dreamweaver for web programming, probly gonna just be using the design view for teaching but whatever)

animation 12: (claymation and 3D, but mostly flash. prob gonna be top of class (totally modest))

physics 11: you guys can probly guess what this one is

japanese 11

cant wait for next year! gonna spend waaaaay more time animating thanks to animation 12. the teacher's reputation for a lot of his classes is to let you do pretty much everything, and he said with my experience i could probly be one of the guys helping out the class instead of learning.

Object Orientated Programming

I am trying to get into it, but flash isn't making it an easy transition. For example, i want to create a smoke effect class, but apparently i can't use the graphics method in class to draw ciricles, or add child, or reference to the parent stage. I'm sure there are ways or doing all this, but i am having to jump through hoop after hoop to get where i want. Anyone know any good tutorials on it?

College was better. Free time, more time, time time. Plus you got to choose your own classes instead of having to take Potions and Transfiguration with Slytherin.

You only need to extend a display object class. You don't need to reference the parent for a graphical effect. Everything else, just think.

I kind of envy your higher drinking age in a way. It must make parties and crap a hell of a lot more exciting and special when you need to jump through hoops to get booze. I miss having house parties and stuff back when I was too young to actually buy my own drinks (crappy distinctive face >.<).

Of course, the higher drinking age sucks in every other way imaginable :P
