Seconded. I am smart enough to only post about my "illegal activities" in the reg lounge and none of you (or so I would hope) would report me. But if someone were to open up the reg lounge and hear some of that and was enough of a tight-ass to call the police...I'd be screwed.

I doubt there's any more nuts on Newgrounds than on the side of the street, people just are more vocal online.

Wow, that's pretty mental.

I really cant think of much else to add, other than I agree with what Depredation, Luis & Impending Riot said.

Or I could say 'poor kid'... but that's more of an impulse reply.. my scripted response ha.

RE5 second impressions

I still like the game, it's pretty much RE4 but in africa (even the progression of the enemies and the story seems similar so far).

It seems extremely over the top though, it's almost humorous. Motorcycle zombies chasing you through the desert while you blast them with a machine gun and their motorcycles EXPLODE EVERYWHERE? Cutscenes where people go matrix and dodge bullets in slow motion? Massive crocodiles that kill you in one hit? It's crazzzzzyyyyy.

I still don't get how like, the zombies can be far away and not notice you, but as soon as you aim at them with the rifle they suddenly switch to "attack mode", even if they were facing away from you and are miles away. It's kinda odd.

The game's still fun though.

SirTom93 came off as rather normal person for the most part. He seemed attention hungry and his attitude was a bit edgy for the Flash forum... you know... the sort of person who wanders in from General and is ready to defend themselves to the teeth. But overall never came off as that sort of person.

The fact that NG users stepped up and took the threat seriously is the kind of knee-jerk reaction we need on the web.

Hi there!

Why would you make a thread here first if you were ACTUALLY planning on burning your school down? Especially someone so associated with the site that he came to meet ups and people knew his address...

Obviously this is speculation, but i dont think he actually intended on doing anything.. from my interactions with him he was a very impressionable person so it wouldnt suprise me that he got into a position where he got alot of pressure from other internet patrons to do it or be ridiculed so in an effort to keep his e-cred he made his thread and proceeded. Adrenaline kicked in and you lose sight of common sense.
It was good that people did take it seriously and people acted quickly.

Yeah I guess youre right, otherwise we wouldnt be talking about him!

I found out today that apparently using even numbers on the blur filter is way faster than odd numbers, for some strange reason. I tried it out and it seems to be true, wierd.

Any mathheads wanna explain why that might be?

Just out of curiosity, what else does that apply for? I'm just going to make a wild assumption it's because of their binary numbers [10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.], but I have no idea how some of this shit works, so I could be entirely wrong.

I went to post 5001 in some PB & J topic in the General Forum and it turned out to be 4998. Are these threads always being deleted from way back and we don't realize it or what?

Must be, powers of 2 have no other relevance to computers other than binary. Dunno why it that makes it run faster though.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Today was awesome. It was the first proper sunny day (yesterday was good, today built on it and was even better) and I was basically outside all day - me and some mates went to town (which is usual) and checked out the art gallery (not so usual, not that the gallery is anything special) then we brought some chairs outside and sat in the lowering sun from about 4-5 until 9. Everyone started copying us and in the end there were about 4 groups, interweaving, just chilling outside in the car park (which is in the middle of a group of student accomodation building which pretty much circle the area). Music (from someones PC but eventually someone plugged in their guitar which is of course awesome), football, skateboarding.. classic. It was quite possibly the best day of uni so far, and I'm looking forward to more of it .. but I'm sure the weather tomorrow will be shite, to piss everyone off after a day of awesome weather :P

What the fuck is it with newbies saying 'I can't learn from tutorials'? I mean, shit, do they expect experienced flashers to spend their personal time on MSN/AIM etc talking them through every onion skin/semi-colon? Is it just an amazingly extreme form of laziness, to be able to look at step-by-step instructions and say 'I can't do that'? FFS

True, preety damn true. There's a lot of knuckleheads that can't really focus into paying attention to a tutorial and bother everyone via PM asking for tips.

However, I'd be an hypocrite bitch if I said I didn't get frustrated A LOT of times while animating because my walking cycles wouldn't look good, it's just about trying over an over and over (now imagine I made it my copy/paste and wrote over and over a thousand times) and I believe it happens to everyone on almost everything, still, that doesn't mean it isn't anooying, but when that pisses you, the thing is that flash can be preety intimidating, specially for something who is just starting, so the person would get frustrated from tutorials. It happened to me thousands of times, good luck for experienced artists I was eleven when I started using flash, so I didn't even know Newgrounds, if not, lot's of people's inboxes would've been filled with thousands of PMs and IMs. At last I managed to get used to the whole thing by myself, but it took me some time. Now imagine the guy who is just starting, it is obvious that the first thing he does, he'll try to make it a true masterpiece and when he realises things aren't going the way he wants them, he'll immediatly want to get done with the animation, so he'll start bothering people over the many things he doesn't understand because he will just want it to be perfect, which is too much for a first try, but as somebody new, he just doesn't know how much experience, effort and passion he'll have to put into his animation.
In spite of what I've said, it's still true, he has no right to annoy somebody just because he is are too lazy to learn by himself, but it's not really his fault when you think of it...

Good observation indeed...

Multiplication/Division by a power of two can be performed by the processor as a bit-shift instead of a multiplication (assuming it knows ahead of time that it's multiplying/dividing by two, usually a compiler determines that)

Bit-shift is much faster than multiplication

Coding Structure

Just thought this might be kind of cool, but where did everyone learn their coding structure from and how does it look. When I mean structure, I don't mean how things are done necessarily, but how they look. Here's mine [as an example and response]:

var number : uint = #;

function name (a : type) : type
{
}

I just mean spacing and enters and stuff. I learned this style from Gust, although I have small adaptations from this style in different places. Also, anyone use any weird colors and shit?

There probably aren't that many variations that people use, but who knows!?

For those of you who are artists and can't answer this question, go draw a cat or do whatever you artists usually do.

Pausing

Do you think an acceptable way of putting a pause function in a game is just to make the frame rate 0.01? That means there's a frame every 1 minute 40 seconds. That means if you pause something for 5 hours it would have the same effect as leaving it unpaused for 4.5 seconds (assuming the original frame rate was 40)? It's a kinda lazy way of doing it, but it's nice and easy to do.

You can set it to zero. It's acceptable, but it would be even easier if you managed updates yourself.

function onEnterFrame (_)
{
  if (pause) return;
  everything.update ();
}

You can't set it to zero using the stage.frameRate, if you try it automatically converts it back to 0.01. I considered managing the updates like you said, but I've got event listeners flying everywhere so it'd be hard to rewrite everything.
