more pathfinding craziness:

http://spamtheweb.com/ul/upload/170209/6 9519_MPTD.php

Same controls as before, click to draw towers, then hit space and click to drop enemies.

This was a test of using the enemies themselves as weights in pathfinding (the number of enemies in a tile represents the weight of the tile). As it turns out, this causes the enemies to spread out and take multiple paths to the enemy, surrounding it like... a swarm... or horde... of zombies... or something.

Best part is it can handle as many enemies as flash can render (all the lag is graphical lag).

I have LBP & MGS4 but I don't play them so much anymore, I do sometimes put the disc in and play for a few hours but I play COD4 much more, because I pwn at it. HARDCORE STYLEE. Uhhh and KZ2 I'll be playing that a lot when it comes out and hopefully a lot of time after (like I do with COD4) =]

I cant speak for programmers obviously but i still find challenge and intruige in flash even after almost 10 years of it.. We love youuuuuu.

In terms of animation I love flash's vector graphics, don't get me wrong. However, there's a lot of times where I've had to make sacrifices or do unnecessary amounts of work to get games done in it. Stuff like Closure, I had a lot more planned for that but it just wasn't feasible to do in flash. Literally impossible. I tried making the level scroll a bit, lags like fuck. Didn't even bother to try and add physics or pushing boxes into it, that's much more than flash can handle when most of its resources are taken up by doing the graphics filter.

It wouldn't be so bad if they would actually use the GPU for shaders (and polygons), but their complete lack of gpu support just means I can't do everything I want to do.

I'll never totally abandon flash. There's a lot of stuff its much more suited for than other languages. Plus I mean, look how many times I've expressed interest in abandoning it, and yet I'm still using it. We have a love-hate relationship.

Future versions of flash player are gonna make use of the GPU, I linked to some article about it a while back. I don't know if future versions means flash player 11 or flash player 20 though.

Ya, I play CoD4 alot, but the new one is better with multiplayer (assuming you are playing with people that know what they are doing). I haven't gotten a chance to play MGS4 yet. Is it as good as people say it is?

Flash Player 10 has support for it, but it only works when running from the desktop, and not very well at all from what I've seen =P I may do tests on my friends computer with a proper graphics card (9800 gtx rather than my 8400m), see if I can see a difference.

No, WaW is not better than 4 in any way. Sure, it has co-op, but the actual game isn't good, so why bother when CoD4 is still fun ;P and yes, MGS4 is even better than they say.

I really enjoyed playing mgs4, but you don't get the feeling (as you do with gta iv or cod) that it was made for the gamer, it seems more for hideos preferences than ours. That said, the cutscenes are fantastic, the stealth gameplay is good (wish there was more of it), and if you've played the mgs games, the story is excellent. The ending (the last 2 minutes) is the best end to a series there has ever been, ever.

I thought pixel bender used the gpu? The problem with using 2 different pieces of hardware as acceleration is that even if you have a quad core 2745ghz cpu, if you've got a buit in gpu, it's gonna lag like hell. I think the best way would be to able to shove different things onto each component (c++ does this right?), to get a good balance between the 2.

Lets face it, the main reason a lot of people use flash for their content and games is the sheer ease of distribution - no mucking about with downloads or installs, just BAM! Right there in the browser, your game or whatever is instantly playable. Also, especially in the case of games, there are a lot of distribution channels like NG, ArmorGames, MiniClip etc that will guarantee you a lot of views at least, millions if you make something worthwhile.

Things like the app store for iphone are opening up new channels for other languages, but in that example you still have to own an iphone, whereas flash can be seen by anyone with a computer, internet connection and any modern browser.

An interesting community project?

It wouldn't have to be Flash-based, we could have a server to keep track of cards.

Pixel bender makes gpu-compatible filters, however in flash they run off the CPU :/

Adobe's only GPU support for flash is with video decoding and scaling, and only if you embed the flash with a certain tag. It's really sucky how little they do with it, and even so, enabling GPU makes it slower in general.

Argh I hate thinking. This took forever to write because of my attention gems like 'queen 0 []' and 'queen (n+1)'.
Stupid Haskell.

Anyway, n-queens in under ten lines. Yesssss.

n = 8

solve = queen 1 []

queen :: Int -> [Int] -> [[Int]]
queen row cfg = do
	q <- [1..n]
	guard $ all (safe (q,row)) $ zip cfg [1..]
	(if row < n then queen (row+1) else return) $ cfg++[q]

safe (c,r) (c',r') = c /= c' && abs (r-r') /= abs (c-c')
guard b = if b then [()] else []

Heya,

After a long break from the Flash community I'm going to try to become semi-regular again, now that I have my major project out:

Bezman designed the levels. Unfortunately it didn't do as well in the portal as I expected, it got .3 points lower than it's predeccessor which was admittedly rubbish :(
I'd appreciate a few votes from some more experienced and knowledgable members of the Flash community, thanks!

SO have I missed anything major over the last year?

lolsigtrend
i just wanna fit in :'(

Damn, the window in my room in my apartment rusted shut from the moisture that accumulated on it this winter...

I need to get this fixed so I can clean the mold growing around the window pane.

Check your lease, you may have to warn your apartment/lease manager for mold since it can be deadly or incredibly harmful for you or other tenants.

I'm sorry, i don't even understand...that... like at all..

Here's the latest look at the first (half) of Tierian, first level of EOD

Please note the following:
Depth hasn't been added yet
I have to remix the trees to be simpler
the general lag has been removed
The "walking area" was scribbled in by me in 30 seconds to show the area in general, if you say "THERES A GLITCH!" i will laugh at you
All of the water you see so far needs tweaking

AND HAVE FUN!

So far it's not looking bad. I like the polish and large-world feel to it.

Only noticeable change I would look into the movement speed of the character. It looks like he's gliding over the area since his sprite doesn't match how fast he's moving across the landscape. I would consider slowing down the walk movement code or potentially making a run movement to match the current speed.
