A propane storage facility set on fire and then the propane exploded. I'm in Buffalo, NY and some people here claim to have felt it.

Here is a link for a cutscene just made for my new game with Cryzabey. It explains these enemies, Candy Monsters, and how they where formed. For some reason the chalkboard sound is when i put it on the internet.

It's pretty neat. I'm looking forward to the finished product.

That chalkboard sound was made using an acoustic guitar and benadryl

inventive!

Yeah, on Luis's note, not only should you get rid of the bevels, but can you try to make the circles and drawing look like they're actually drawn in chalk? I just think you should look at that a bit and see if you like it, because I personally think it would look really cool if all the outlines were chalky and it looks like it was colored with it too..

I now understand how people feel overwhelmed when they don't come here for a day or two. 4 new pages since last night, and in the last 2 pages (the 2 before this one), there's ~3 Flash-related posts. I know it isn't all Flash talk in here, but it'd be easy to miss someone looking for comments on something among the other stuff.

Cutscene for candy game

Looks alright, but it seems odd that you don't stick with the chalkboard theme. Why not make the pictures chalkboard-like drawings? Unless there's some other look you're going for. Just a suggestion.

Yeah, but those are productive people. The forums seems to be where a lot of people just slack off and chat around with each other. Also, I doubt those types of people would want to be around some of the morons who civilize this place.

RE: Toronto Explosion

I saw that on the news. Looked absolutely massive.

Speaking of current events in Canada, Patricia Clegg, a woman with Huntington's disease, went missing yesterday. Today they found her -- in a ditch, drowned. She was my next-door neighbor. :(

She and her family had gone to their cabin, but her husband had to return to work while they stayed out there (with the husband's mother), and Patricia went missing shortly after. I don't know if Huntington's has varying degrees of severity, but she could barely walk on her own. It's tragic.

Huntingtons basically erodes the brain neuron by neuron, so i'm guessing she didn't have to long anyway. Horrible disease.

So, I met someone in the hospital the other day (i've been in the hospital for the past couple weeks) while I was staying with a relative and we talked about some potential work. Long story short she wants me to work on a "doll maker" program that'll create greeting cards.

It's like a dress up but the configuration for the different dolls needs to be saved. Those dolls will then be put onto a greeting card which will then be e-mailed to her so that she can print them out and ship them to the customer.

What I was thinking was I could use XML to store all the data, then parse it out with php into a jpg, but I'm not sure that's possible anymore. I know php can generate images but I'm not sure how it works.

Also, I need to pull the art assets off of a server, they won't be stored in the flash file. Although I was thinking of just making the flash file and modifying it whenever new pieces were made (I'm looking for minimal maintenance).

With everything said and done, now I'm beginning to wonder whether $1,000 is a reasonable price, or am I cutting myself short?

Way too little IMO for an application so complicated. Anything that involves integration of more than one application, ie: flash + php + xml/database = around $3K

Also, here is a link to a way to encode .jpg files using bitmap data in flash 9 (AS3):

I don't know - you'd have to think of how much you'd ask for it if you were already familiar with the stuff involved (it doesn't make sense for a client to pay extra for incompetence (bad choice of word, but you get the idea)).

It's probably wouldn't take more than ten to twelve hours of full focus to get all the stuff sorted out - you're not drawing anything - so around $100 an hour seems pretty reasonable. Plus, you're taking away knowledge of different kinds of scripting that you can then apply to a future project.

I dont really have an opinion on the actual quote cause im not too saavy with the scope of the work he is quoting but i think that even at 12 hours of full focus.. you want to give yourself a buffer for bug scrub / hang-ups and unscheduled turbulence. I think the most common mistake you make as a freelancer (and ive been burned many times) is to quote it to pinpoint accuracy.

You will lose in the long run. If I guesstimate a job to be 12 hrs of labor i like to block out an extra 4-6 for intangibles. So my quote to the client would be 18hrs of labor. That buffer comes in very useful. Even if you end up not needing all of the hours you've set aside, you can atleast ensure that the client is going to get a fully fleshed, precise end product in the end.

Always always always always give yourself a buffer.

if ive yet to make that clear.....
always :)

If you're using Flash to render it on one side, why would you differently on the other? She can print out a Flash rendering.

Also, I need to pull the art assets off of a server, they won't be stored in the flash file. Although I was thinking of just making the flash file and modifying it whenever new pieces were made (I'm looking for minimal maintenance).

That's all the work you have to do. PHP programmers deal with that shit every day (and I have to listen to it on our IRC channel).

With everything said and done, now I'm beginning to wonder whether $1,000 is a reasonable price, or am I cutting myself short?

Two or three thousand if you're not doing the art/design.
