Dreamworx, what have you started! LOL!!

It's one thing if a known and respected user does it (and offers compensation), but what's with all these n00bs, with 3 posts, that just signed up a week ago, expecting it for free?! ...c'mon!!!

I guess 'make me a logo/intro' is the new collab! boo!

...it's criminal!

Nope, I kind of wanted it so I could have like falling objects and hten it could change the flow, but I guess I'll just take a few days and figure out some physics so I can do it somehow else. Still, if anyone knows any good tutorials on this kind of water or physics, it'd be nice.

That sparked my interest.. here's what I got so far (It's all actionscript):

SO i made executive ASB

so i am one of the top dogs in the school now yay! today i have to go to a meeting to pick the administrative board from the interviews we had on thursday and friday. ugh it was so boring we had ~80 applicants who each had a 10 minute interview. it took forever. It may be confusing cause my school is wierd. we only have elections to pick 7 people who make executive which is like president, vice president, treasurer (me!), school board rep, activities (x2), and parliamentarian. then us 7 interview applicants and select where each should go and stuff. the selecting is pretty fun since its like the picking a league of superheroes or whatever ad you have to tkae account there personalities and how thy would react to the others in the group, and what job they are best suited for.

NGUP and SWFUP both went down for the same reasons.
A user based uploader is a lot of effort to maintain, imagine having thousands of new files being uploaded everyday and having to check each one to make sure it's not illegal, because if it is the server you're being hosted on will be terminated, because it's against US law. Then there is the issue of bandwidth and space - it's not cheap to run a site that has so much bandwidth used a month and very little revenue. SWFUP was costing $500 a month to run and he was making around $200 a month, operating at a loss.

Sites like that just aren't feasible.

It's weird that these people wanting to be animators can't get the skills to animate their own logo. It's reasonable for programmers but for anybody animating it makes no sense.

I guess that if you want to earn some kind of profit on an uploading-site you would either have to make it about so much more the uploader, and/or put ads all over..

I think that an arrogant animator just went at a barrel of fish with a shotgun. Yeah, I have to agree with you there :P It's annoying when people don't know how to use subtlety or irony.

I couldn't even finish watching that. It's skillfully animated, with some nice effects here and there, but it's simply too much, too bittersweet-let's-change-the-world-toget her. And then there's the soundtrack, a bunch of millionaires trying to make a difference by singing a song together, whoop-tee-doo. That really made the entire thing even more of a pain too watch.

Like those movies or videos where you sit there and all of a sudden feel a chill going down your back. This was about as far from that as I've gotten. Agreed on the music to an extent. I think there could have been a better choice, but the million-aire thing doesn't but me while I'm watching the video itself.

Yeah, that chill thing is when you know you're watching something truly amazing. It's not something you can put into words. Like the standoff at the end of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, or when you're getting your memory back in FFVII, or the escape from the coffin in Kill Bill, or the weird bit at the end of MGS2.

I'm sure everyone has their own, but that is what true brilliance is - stuff with qualities beyond the obvious. Things which try to achieve that by rubbing a load of crap in your face just epitomise faliure.

Show fellow regs your ink!
It's been too long since we hit this topic.

Location: Left shoulder.
Design: From golden eagle pendate of father.
Meanings:
-Eagle as a symbol of freedom of mind and spirit.
-Grey shaded showing things aren't black & white, but have many different possibilities.
-Blue eyes like father symbolizing father watching over.

And I'm sure once I go to jail it'll have a jailbird meaning. :P

Also, Luis I know the perfect tat for you. Just a lovely lil' you draw in Pico style with a shotgun looking badass. It would symbolize how your like young forever and in everyones with a "Whatevar, I DO WHAT I WANT!" look on life. Plus in the future you can look at it and remember all the great things you did on NG, poeple you met, experinces, etc.

But that's just my idea. I still think my friend should get a $20 bill tat on his dick so he can watch his money grow. :3

I got that feeling when I first watched Reservoir Dogs. Fact is, I hate the movie - I can't stand the violence. However, it is just an amazing film. You can't help but be impressed by Tarantino's mastery of tension.

Classic/Old Games

Who else loves 'em?
I'm currently downloading MGS1 and GTA2 (Legally of course). I'm not sure exactly what site you can get MGS1 from as I got redirected through loads of sites but you can get GTA2 from the Rockstars website. By the time I click 'Post it! >' my download of MGS1 will be done, and the fun will commence until family guy at 10 o'clock.

Aren't they just the best. I gave up on MGS as I couldn't do it ;P
But I'm loving GTA2 as much as I used to. It was always my favorite, even since SA etc. simply 'cause of how much I loved it when it first came out.

Nostalgia's a great thing. Can't help but roll my eyes when people spew about pop nostalgia like Mario and Sonic, but a good old gem is something to be revered. Every year or so, I play through one of my old PSX-era games and love the shit out of it. Front Mission 3, Breath of Fire 3, Einhander, Rollcage Stage 2. Was the golden age of games, I say. Late enough not to be tired and simple, but not so late that everything's about specular light mapping and frames per second.

Hehe, I've got all the FF games you can play on a Playstation :) The ones before they hopped over to PS2 are the best. Plus RPGs are great if you suffer from insomnia - they're pretty relaxing.

It's funny you mention it - I'm mid-way through MGS1 right now. Just beaten Psycho Mantis :)

Agreed. Another game I used to quite like is twisted metal world tour or whatever. I used to love the fuck out of that game. I probably still have an old copy, not the original, of it somewhere. Rollcage Stage II is a game I quite liked. I should dig out the old PS and look for games or go buy some. Maybe dig out the ol' Super Nintendo while I'm at it. I bought about 20 game cartridges for it of some pretty decent games a year or so ago. They were 50p each or something.

Current Projects

What have you guys got in the works at the moment? Anything thats going to have us on edge waiting for the release? Websites? Movies? Games?

Recurring topic, I know. But its always nice to see whats going on.

I've spent the day building on about 5, yes 5, separate engines. I've decided to completely scrap 2 of them and never work on it again and another I am considering scrapping. 1 of them I'm going to build on a bit more and see if it'd work out. One is a remake of an old engine and I'm just going to plug the old level designs into it and away we go. Then the fifth one I haven't actually started work on but I came up with the concept about an hour ago and I've been going over it in my head. I'm going to stop working on anything else and try and put it together over the next couple of days. I believe it is quite simple so the engine might be done as soon as midday tomorrow. The levels however will take quite a while to do as its a puzzle game.

What would you guys say is the best way to come up with levels for a puzzle game that are challenging?

I have the basics of the whole engine done. Right now it can choose a room, chat etc. You can also play the simplest form of it right now (free-for-all, just shoot and kill right now). I'm going to add more maps, game types, etc :D

Try to avoid having it start off easy and then get gradually harder and harder. A player might develop fatigue where they've done like 3 hard puzzles in a row and just stop playing. So while you're making sure the challenges get harder, make sure to throw an easy one in every so often.

Also, I recently finished playin through the Orange Box. It comes with Developer Commentary that's like a lesson in level design. It's mint.
