You definately made the right descision. If a friend says "dude check out this youtube video." ill rarely go. byut if i get told theres a worthwile submission on NG, ill definetly check it out. Its nice to belong to NG and have a dedicated place for flash
Keep up the good work

Newgrounds is the one truly great flash site, and I am glad that it will stay that way. The occaisonal ingenious video clip is always welcomed, but anyone can pick up a camera and film crap. To create flash, it takes a certain amount of knowledge.
and I think it's great that Gary is reppin NG like that

I think the reason its all being linked to youtube is because the interface is a bit more userfriendly. When you get a youtube link, all you have to do is sit back and watch the video. When i give a newgrounds link to people who never been here before they sometimes dont even see the 'watch this movie' button. Also the search function on youtube is a bit more prominent and it works pretty swell. Personally i love this website. It takes a small while to completely understand, but it's so complex and cool that once you make an account here you keep coming back. I dont have that at all with youtube. I also think its a good decision to not make a video portal. I dont think a video portal has alot to do with what newgrounds really is. I mean you could create a dating portal, an internet search engine, a webmail or whatever but i just dont really see it fit in this community. Its great the way it is and as long as the improvements on this website are art/flash related it's all fine i think.

Yeah, I totally agree, Newgrounds would have been so different if there was a Video Portal, it just wouldn't be good old Newgrounds. Newgrounds is the #1 flash portal on the web, and that's how I want it to stay.

Newgrounds is strong.
it's great you didn't make a video portal because then it would really ruin what I like about newgrounds. Newgrounds is a flash community please don't change it.

During the interview, they show Numa Numa on Newgrounds and Gary talks about how he submitted it to NG and things exploded. It's great to see Gary giving props to Newgrounds! The rest of the press always links people to YouTube to watch Numa Numa, even though YouTube wasn't even around during the whole "phenomenon."
Even though I love youtube, that is paticulary unfair, seriously, I mean come on.
We had talked for years about launching a video portal and even had ideas to convert multiple video formats to .swf files, so that visitors didn't have to deal with multiple video plugins (which was the hot concept when YouTube finally did it). As much as we talked about it, we didn't want to risk taking the emphasis off the Flash artists and the community that has grown out of NG. Looking back, it could have made us as big as YouTube has become... But it probably would have overtaken and destroyed NG as we all know it, so I still think (hope) we made the right decision. :)
You have made the right decision. Sadly Gary barely mentions it on newgrounds. He of course still manages newgrounds on which it good though.

Boy that was quite the small "mention." I think NG shoulda gotten just a littel bit more props.

Video portal would be a very interesting idea. Reconsider it :)

The biggest reason I could understand that people would link to youtube is because newgrounds is incredibly cluttered. I rarely give my friends links to newgrounds because it's so confusing to the average person who isn't used to it. You have to find where to click just to launch a new window to watch the movie, theres text and little images all over the place and to someone whos not familar with newgrounds, it can be a little overwhelming.
On the other hand look at youtube. You goto a link and boom! right there it is ready to watch. It's very clear that all you need to do is press the play button. The design is very clean and easy to understand in comparison with newgrounds.
Don't get me wrong I love newgrounds. I've been here for a long time and I think it's the hands down best flash website. I just wish somebody would finally put their foot down and say "Ok! We are going to redesign the site once and for all and make it less cluttered!".

Well I always wanted a video portal becuase it shows a distinction between what's video and what flash animation. Also videos are already accepted in the portal anyway. All that is needed is to convert the vid to the flash program with or without any animation.
But I guess I am a lone voice in wilderness.
If it meant showcasing more videos on the front page then actually I probably wouldn't like it.
I always wanted a portal (or something simmiliar) where people could see art work like drawings and stuff cause I have alot of problems with sites like Deviant and Sheezy and I kind of hate submitting stuff to Deviant. I always thought they were only sucessful cause NG never gave users the abbility.

What I mean is the attention is sorta focused on video as much as flash regardless.
I still remember that home made Mentos commerical on the front page. It was high quality for what it was but what it was was not flash. I didn't know what to think of it. I f I cared enough to visit a video site and see it, it be different story and it would be one of my favorites or something. It would of been interesting to see some student films on NG too I guess.

On the other tentacle, the portal view pages do have some decent details, such as what it is you're watching and who it's suitable for. It works for Youtube cos they have control over explicit content, but say you were an innocent little child not long for the adult world and you get sent an NG link to, ooh, let's say...Tankmen 5.5, without knowing what it was or what kinda content you were likely to expect (though to be fair, since when does anyone expect what Stamper's gonna do). Goodbye innocence.

Tom, you guys definietly made the right decision, keeping the emphasis on flash artists and their art is what make Newgrounds the best there is, if the focus had gone over to video bloogers and their dairies and all that, I probably would've left a long time, it's the art thats kept me here man!
