Removing audio 'fuzz'? 2006-09-20 13:55:07 Reply

Hi there, i'm not usually on the audio forums, so sorry if this question gets asked loads:

I making a cartoon, and i'm adding the finishing touches to it. However, my background audio has this constant background buzzing... its just a low hum, its not intrusive. But it's still ...inconvenient.

Anyway, is there anyway to edit out the background fuzz without re-recording the whole thing? I usually use Audacity for my sound editing... but i cant work out how to remove background noise, if its at all possible...

well i know whats causing it. mains ground hum, u can't eliminate it, but prevention is better than cure. basicaaly you'd want as much electrical equipment off as is possible. including monitors as they are the worse, find sweet spots for instruments, lay all cables and the like pararrell not over lapping and try to have em as short as is possible too.

now to get rid of it, u'll need a digital de noiseing programme are a very goo parametric eq, with at least 30 bands to play with. mains hum occurs in two different parts of the audio spectrum, in the very high part 20khz and in the low parts 80hz, so u'll need to sweep your eq over these frequenceis and accentuate or lower the given point where the sound is most noticable. this will change the apparent toe of the track as a whole tho. a digital denoising programming may help better. it'll analyse a section of track 'silence' just beforethe music plays but has started playing if you know what i mean, it'll then apply some clever filtering to eliminate as much hiss and hum as possible.

...so basically, re-record it with my microphone as far away from my computer as possible?

Unfortunately, yes.

Another issue is simply, fan noise from you pc. The procedure to remove that is to take a sample of the sound of the fan and then remove that afterwards using a programme like sound forge or wavelab.

also you might want to think about lowering the gain on the mic and speak louder into it i know it sounds odd but a louder tone will mask the hiss far more. also id think about investing in a better vocal mic. but it isnt that bad if you sound track it i doubt you'd notice it that much, just a quiet ambience piece may well mask it.

Try noise reduction first - If you can get a hold of Audition (free trial perhaps) and if there is a second or two of just the noise then you might be able to strip it out.

re-record as a last resort but keep it in mind for the future.

If you want, you could send me the noisy files and I can try to clean them up for you - no guarantees, but it might be easier than re-recording the whole thing. PM me if you're interested.

if you don't mind spending a small amount of money, you can get a program called "groove mechanic". It records and cleans up recodings very nicely. You can also try "Nero Wave Editor". It does a nice job as well. (Both of these programs record audio as well.)

If you don't find anything, drop me a line and I may be able to do it for you.

As long as you're happy with it, its all good, but be well aware that the better the source of the recording, the better overall the recording will be.
