I've seen a lot of redneck bashing lately, and I thought it might be nice to open up a dialogue with you guys.
You see, I'm from Memphis, and I honestly don't see why the term "redneck" has been used as an ethnic slur in recent years. "Redneck" is historically used as a term for a white man that actually works outdoors for a living, as opposed to living off of inherited wealth and the labor of minorities.
If anything, redneck is kind of a noble term for ethical, working class whites who share the same financial status as working class blacks. However, I see it being used interchangeably with the term "White trash" which refers to methed out trailer park denizens. These terms are almost polar opposite depictions of lower class whites.
Meh, yankees and whiny californians probably still don't understand. Apparently all that money has made you guys classist.

up here we have useless white trash who dont do shit and live off of wellfare. except up where i am they tend to be called Hicks, more or less another derogatory term fro redneck. the thing is, people typically thingk redneck as white racist men who are prejudice against everything, typically conservative and alcoholic. and lets face it a harsh working life would do that to most anybody, so soon enough, every "townie" becomes a redneck in people eyes - they hang out together, then things they do and how they live outside of work becomes part of the mental image of others, they drive pick up trucks, listen to country, have "support our troops" stickers, generally christians, and dicks to everyone who's not like them. thus they in a way helped along the idea people have towards red necks.
not to mention pop culture bashing the south as all red neck white trash ignorant racists...how often is texas or the deep south portrayed by intelligent characters? the southern accent is slurred and slowed, it makes a person seem that way, despite whats going on in their head.
we have people just like that, who give off a bad image and even take the name redneck or hick with pride because it puts them into some social group - thus why they shun outsiders, they have a constant need to belong, so if they can be seen together as a unified group, then they will attempt to give off whatever the expectations of the group.
red neck used to mean a hardworking person who made a living outdoors typically doing farming or contracting. but today its become synomonious with white trash, trailer parks and bigotry

Up here the term for working man is Lumpah and it's worn with pride. As for the slur you can blame foxworthy for flashing it around more than dave chappele with his word. I've always said that keeping these things in the current usage does no good.

I agree. In fact, the term "redneck" stems from the sunburns people got on their necks while working outdoors.
The South has seemingly always been portrayed as full of slack-jawed yokels that marry their own cousins and go to Klan meetings, and all that. Are there freaks in the South? Sure. But there's freaks everywhere. But those of us who live here know, that we that get portrayed as "hicks" or "rednecks" are good, honest, hard working Americans who love God, country and family.

And that's just as prejudice as me thinking all blacks smell, and live off welfare.

You're right. Just like the blacks in Harlem, in a way, help along the idea people have towards blacks.
we have people just like that, who give off a bad image and even take the name redneck or hick with pride because it puts them into some social group - thus why they shun outsiders, they have a constant need to belong, so if they can be seen together as a unified group, then they will attempt to give off whatever the expectations of the group.
If you interchanged the words 'redneck' and 'hick' in your above post, you could be speaking of any minority.
Many accuse blacks of doing exactly what you imagine 'rednecks' doing.
You're just as ignorant for believing the 'redneck' stereotype as a racist is for believing the 'wetback' stereotype.
I swear by my life - and my love of it - that I will never live my life for the sake of another man, or ask another man to live his for mine.

Its like saying California is southern, kind of.
Technically they are, but when you say Florida you dont really think off of people sitting on a porch spitting into a can with a shotgun on their lap. The only southern thing I can think of is gators and swamp races.
So, I would say it depends on where you live, but its probably neutral like Kansas, Virginia, and California.

Education isn't limited to knowledge gained in school. Education also involves learning through interaction with others and society. If someone harbors stereotypes based on interactions with a few people, or harbors stereotypes based on a small percentage difference in a few selected statistical measures, then it is obvious they do not have adequate social education, regardless of the education they have received in school relating to their field of study.

No, but much of what you know is because of school. That is, unless you lived on the street your entire life.

Well put, but telling me something I already know doesnt change anything. The statement I said earlier is usually just refrenced as a joke, since the only interaction most people up here have with southerns is larry the cable guy and king of the hill.
But I myselft had a bad, life changing experience with a redneck once. Which is why I harbor deep stereotypes, and I dont really care if people get offended because its just a joke.
And if your still offended, welcome to life.

School teaches academic subjects. It does not teach you about social interaction, behavior, etc. Those are learned from real life experience and cannot be duplicated in the classroom.

If it's a joke, then why did you waste so much time defending it? And if it's a joke, why is nobody laughing? The fact that people stereotype millions of people in a region based on some comedian and some TV show isn't funny at all; there's no joke, there's no punchline. It's actually a rather sad state of affairs that people with access to all sorts of information and interaction still stupidly harbor those stereotypes based on a couple bits of pop culture.

Give school more credit, in the classroom you learn academics. But what about on the playground? The hallway? Whether you know it or not, you probably developed most of your social skills during school.
If it's a joke, then why did you waste so much time defending it?
I love to argue, even if its over the most petty thing I still argue about it. And I keep most of my smartass arguments online, because as you may know its not the most popular feature that people like in a friend.
And if it's a joke, why is nobody laughing?
Maybe not where you live, but its funny were I am. I believe thats called differing cultures.
The fact that people stereotype millions of people in a region based on some comedian and some TV show isn't funny at all;
Really? You dont find the fact of how pathetic that is, and how incredibly shallow humans can be amusing? Like I said, I had a bad-tramatising(sp) experience when I was a kid. Which, unfortunatly, cant be rooted out no matter how much I realize it.
It's actually a rather sad state of affairs that people with access to all sorts of information and interaction still stupidly harbor those stereotypes based on a couple bits of pop culture.
