I'm totally with you. I don't think people should base their lives on arbitary tradition-based rules taken from poorly translated shepard's tales.

I agree. Yesterday my girlfriend and were given information booklets about Christianity from this bloke. I lokked at the cover, and it said 'How to get into Heaven'. I just laughed and threw the crap in the bin. And my mrs'.
Religion has no place in my life, although I try to respect other peoples' beliefs. It really annoys me when fanatical religous types keep on about how great God/Allah/Jehova/Buddha is, and tell me I will burn in hell for being athiest. To them I say, piss off.
Religion gas caused nothng but war, and the sooner we seperate religion from the state the better.
So concludes my rant, amen.

It's really hard to say if religion has done more harm than good. What is easiest to remember is the number of religious wars; unlike acts of pure good conducted in its name. I personally do not practice religion fully (I hardly remember what the inside of a church looks like), but am open to it and the fact that there may indeed be a governing deity.

I never push my theological views on anyone.
And most of the people who do also start wars and blow up stuff for fun.

Very peaceful crowd, those.

I am not an athiest, but rather.. i think the word is agnostic. i cannot honestly see how one can be either evangelistic or completely atheistic. It baffles me.

On one hand, you have those who follow the dogma of their religion, and hold it as truth (with no other evidence than some old book whose origins are questionable).

On the other hand, you have the atheists, who deny the existence or possibility of any higher power. And what basis do they have for that belief? More often than not, the answer I hear is 'none'.

I'm not religious, and I think the idea of organized worship is rather laughable (you're a bad jew/muslim/christian/buddist/etc because you didn't pray when we wanted you to), but to completely deny even the possibility?

Try AGNOSTICISM, and be a better person
Or not, really. It's your life.

I don't worship or pray, but I identify with a lot of the better princibles of popular religion such as (all you who've participated in White America know what's coming...) The Golden Rule. However, when placed next to a christian and an atheist, I can actually identify with the atheist much more easily because his/her head isn't clogged with 'holy mother church' bullshit.

There was a time and place when religion was needed. But we aren't living thousands of years in the past. We're living in the PRESENT. We don't need to bother ourselves with the question of divinity, but rather focus on not killing so many of each other over it. We don't need to focus on whether or not we'll secure a spot in the cushy afterlife, but rather focus upon making life here more tolerable for others.

I'd never follow a god who wanted me to cut pork from my diet and kill others because they don't worship properly, anyway.

Long live bacon.

People can be deeply spiritual and still be atheist. Atheism is not necessarily against religion or spirituality, it is simply the disbelief in God (or deity). Buddhism and Thelema come to mind.

I'm an atheist as well. Religion attempts to instill moral values, so I'm not entirely against it (nor are most atheists, I believe), but I'm reminded of a quote:
"Know Jesus, no peace
No Jesus, know peace."
Kind of lame, but also true, in a sense.

I pondered Hinduism and Taoism for a while, but decided it would be easier to keep Atheism and just run with that.

Oh, and Ted, if you didn't notice, there are a lot of low level people invading the forum.

It really surprises me. They caught on to how smart I was in just one post. It takes most people at least a dozen.

Im jewish but I m not really religous, I see it more as a culture than religion, or at least that is what it seems to be here in the states. Jewish humor, food, music, traditions. There really is not much discusion about god. I have a science mind and I really don't know if I belive in god or not. If there is a god I think that he/she/it just threw everything in motion and watched it go, no divine intervention, just the start of the big bang. But I think Im going to go with the "Island of mandango where every night is a night of wine drinking and hot sex and nobody ever gets jealous." The Grim Reaper show (my fav) Watch it here.

Atheism is retarded. Religions founded centuries or millenia ago shouldn't be taken so literally today, but that doesn't mean that God is irrelevent. God doesn't have to be an old man with a white beard lording over the universe from a throne. I look at the pictures of outer space and all its celestial wonders, I ponder upon the sheer complexity of the human form, of all life and I see God.

I think, "How can a Universe this beautiful exist, without God? How could something as amazing as life come to be without God? And how could a God capable of creating such beauty and wonder not want us to treat each other with dignity and respect, how could God not want us to love this beautiful existance that was made for us?"

God can be the Big Bang or an old man on a throne, or even the Earth itself, but to discount God is to make your universe a gray and shallow thing. I always think of Atheists as biting their noses to spite their faces.

I was born into a Quaker family. After much consideration, I have chosen to follow both Quakerism and Buddhism. I got to a Catholic high school. I take everything they say concerning religion to heart. But after deliberation, I've found a priest has no more right to connect me to creation than I do myself.

Somebody said somewhere that they didn't understand both ends of the spectrum: fundamentalism and atheism. And with that, I do agree. The great quote from Dogma said by Chris Rock was (and I'm not entirely accurate) "I just think ideas are better. You can change an idea if you don't like it. People die over beliefs." Fundamentalism doesn't make sense to me because you have to accept everything told to you as true, and that is the mark (to me) of the callous and unintelligent. Atheism doesn't make sense to me because you have to accept an unusual amount of coincidences as being coincidences and not something more interesting or perhaps grand. You also have to accept that a huge number of people...a number you probably can't think of the name of...as being dead wrong. Most of those people comprise some of the greatest thinkers the human race has ever spawned.
There's a reason why religion shouldn't be taught as shallowly as it is being taught nowadays. Most people are simply inculcated or spurned from believing it at a young age and that destroys most of the chances that they'll have any true interest in it; blindly following religion or blindly disagreeing with it. Saying that "religion" has caused most of the wars in human history is a pretty blanket statement: the only wars caused directly by religion would be the Crusades and probably the Thirty Years' War.
Live and believe, not the other way around. That's how I see it. So basically I don't agree.

I am more in favor of being agnostic, which basically means that if there is a god, you're keeping your options open.

I'd be pretty surprised if you read any of those books.

The bible and Jesus' story is the most cleverly written story of all time. Read the gospels of the New Testament, then Acts, and then go back to the old testaments or read some of the letters of Paul.

Without religion, life is meaningless. That's why atheists have to form together to talk about how they hate religion.

It is true. When you accept that you were created by a powerful God, that can only mean that you have purpose in your life. God created every person with purpose, but because many don't accept God, they don't believe that every life has purpose. You or I didn't happen from chance.
