The current track has Sandy turning into another Johnstown flood scenario. Though what concerns me are wind speeds.

I was on the phone last night with a buddy of mine from New Orleans. He said Sandy wasn't a big deal. Not a big deal for whom? You tell someone up here a hurricane is coming, and they'll wonder if they need a snow shovel.

Hurrican aside, am I the only one that finds it funny that the southeast is getting snow before the north?

Here in Nova Scotia, its clouded over because of the hurricane, but it is warm as in short pants warm.

Still waiting to see what path this storm is going to take, with the other systems it is presently running into , no ones really predicting anything except a big mess somewhere !

But I don't really care, I've got food for several months, lots of fresh water & I have a well that is drinkable, a new generator, 5 cords of wood for my wood stove, candles, 2 hurricane lanterns, batteries , flashlights a snowblower ...my 4x4 is fueled up .& the propane BBQ is ready to go ~;)
I've got lots of supplies .... so unless it blows down my post & beam constructed building while I'm in it ....I'm probably going to be fine .

The worst will come overnight. I have supplies, but my husband is working overnight. I'm already worried about him getting there and coming home, but I'd rather not ride this out by myself. Can't be helped though. Gonna try and get some sleep. I have to call work tomorrow if I don't have power (I work remotely) so my boss can be sure I'm accounted for.

Aside from Manhattan getting an impromptu Venice costume for Halloween, has Sandy actually done anything bad?

The news reports and facebook postings made it seem like the Eat Coast was going to be sucked into the abyss, and now the reports and posts sound it got a light spritzing.

Hi Rydia
How did it go ?
Don't see you on here yet, wondering if you're one of the many without power .
Also did you have a camera so you could take photo's if it got interesting ?

We got nothin' here , a bit of rain a little wind ... could have been just a normal everyday rain storm ...& not a very big one at all.

I'm living in one of the areas in the county that still has power, but flooding and landslides have been an issue. One major bridge is also close since some docks and boats were shaken loose by both the wind and rising water and both are floating aimlessly along that section of the river. Two counties over, they got 14 inches of snow. One of our main rivers flows from their direction to ours. If that starts melting into the already swelling river, we're in trouble. Last night when it went to bed it sounded like I was in a wind tunnel, but that has died down except for a few gusts. It has been raining nonstop though, which is causing more flooding and landslide worries.

My in-laws in Maryland have power, but no cable or Internet. Go figure. As for my parents, they had the right idea. They headed to Aruba on Saturday.

Nice to hear yer OK.

We have been getting some bands of incredible rain today. Mostly its just light drizzle & showers but every now & then the sky just dumps .... & it literally sounds like a rumbling train !

Our river has risen to the tops of its banks & I'll probably soon have 25 feet of water in a 20 foot deep well !

But its business as normal here today, although with it being halloween tonight, the little ones if they go trick or treating will be getting wet

Down here they moved trick or treating to Saturday. One of my pagan friends got all pissed off. My husband had to explain to him they are not postponing the holiday, just an event.

No, my parents didn't go to Aruba to escape a hurricane. It was already planned. There was some worry they wouldn't be able to get out of the Miami airport but it worked out.

THat's funny , on a similar note about nonmainstream religious observers.

Our local Superstore had block parmesan cheese on sale half price ... All the pastafarians celebrated wildly, nearly cleaning out the pasta aisle & making a sizable dent in the local red wine selection of our little liquor store ( in this Province alcohol of all types are sold through a Government store)

THose crazy religious people .... I've noticed that there is a noticable amount of xmas decorations going up !
Nothing says xmas more than crappy lawn displays & colored lights strung everywhere !

Whatever. I yearn for all of those hokey and completely incorrect Christmas commercials (even those insulting Lexus commercials, seriously, who the fuck do they think we are? Romney?) because I am sick and tired of all these election commercials.

I wish there was a way to turn off the election commercials once you vote. That'd drive up early voting like crazy.

Pennsylvania also sells liquor through a government store. One thing I miss about Ohio is being able to go to the grocery store or gas station and pick up a drink. People have been begging for privatized liquor stores forever, but the state liquor control board doesn't want to budge, for obvious reasons.

In advance of Sandy on Monday, all the liquor stores closed at 3 PM. THAT got people upset. I stayed dry literally and figuratively while everything went down though.

Yeah it ain't goin' work here ...we had to have an election just to get Sunday shopping in. WHne it passed, the Government refused to allow it.

That pissed off a couple of the really big family owned Grocery stores & they opened in contravention of the 'Law' that said you couldn't.

The Store owners position was the public in a majority vote asked for it, the Government doesn't have the right to throw out the results. They welcomed the police to please come & arrest Store Managers & or The Owners so they could get it in front of the Courts ...The Provincial Government blinked & backed down .... & we have never seen a vote put to us about anything controversial since & probably won't for a long , long time !
THe Government Liquor stores are here to stay ...hell until just recently it was illegal for a winery to sell its own products. Their only legal customer ...was the NSLC (Nova Scotia Liquor Commission)
THat law has changed, the threat by big beer of buying smaller breweries & moving them (& the loss of jobs) out of the Province convinced them to allow producers of beer wine & spirits to sell their own products where they are made & or where they are stored in a certain amount ... in other words if it isn't a large bulk shipping centre you can't put a beer store in it for example. But a small basement local brewery can sell beer to take home right out the front door now.

SO except for a dozen or so places where you can only buy the products made there, all Booze is bought through the NSLC

That sucks as here in Alberta there is literally a private liquor store of ever other block as we do not have Government run ones anymore. 70 liquor stores per 50 thousand people where I live.

It is interesting how Canadians have a red province/blue province thing going on like we do down here. Though the subject of health care and taxes up there has led to arguments between my husband and me, so we have to avoid the subject.

He's never been to Canada, but my last trip up there, I was helping my mom chaperone a bunch of students at a Toronto production of The Lion King. I've been to several big cities, but Toronto makes me claustrophobic for some reason. I've also been throughout Ontario, but my Canadian knowledge only comes from those trips and Red Green. I wouldn't mind a trip to Vancouver one day, even if all my Canadian buddies insist they're not really Canadian.

The ballot initiative process is a lot different in Pennsylvania, but privatized liquor is making some inroads. There are restrictions, but some grocery stores have been selling beer.

Gah! The spam posting rules here are bugging me.

I am not trying to spam, but the NG forum bot thinks I am. There should be like some regular badge you can get that will double your allotment, so like after 3,000 posts, and a Mod confirmation you can double post and post 8 times in 30 minutes. It was really hard to post updates in the electoral college thread because of the bot.

Vancouver is in the top three most beautiful City's in North America IMO though Seattle is pretty nice as well. Toronto is a crap shoot and so are most big Cities IMO.

Soooooooooooooooo kids.

I was supposed to go to New York to fill in for some coworkers who can't make it in - physically, their road has been destroyed and hasn't been cleared yet. But our bus arrived, we took one look at the shit show going on in Manhattan, and turned right the fuck around. Jesus Christ, seriously, New York is a disaster area of the worst order.

How do you know you've been working the campaigns too hard? When you don't realize Sandy was even a deal until Nov. 7. Can't believe I missed all this.

You're lucky. Most of my area is still without power and will be for many weeks and for some areas months. Imagine having no power and water on Christmas Eve. You know that is going to suck.

An update: Went up to NYC with my office as part of a relief volunteer team, helping out people in the area without power. Usually I'd insert a snarky comment here, but I spoke with a woman still looking for her child in the wake of the flooding, and there are general rules about survivability this far out from a disaster on the scale of Sandy.

It's just really unfortunate, and it makes me upset with myself that I volunteered wholeheartedly to help clean up the flooding of my white brothers in Brooklyn and such, but couldn't be fucked to go volunteer for the Katrina recovery when people were begging for volunteers in college. Makes you feel kind of like a dipshit.

You can't be everywhere. All help is equal. You're an adult now and have much more freedom to actually go and help than you would in college, where such volunterring even for just a week or two could set you back a term and cost upwards of $10,000.

Also, I was in college during Katrina and I don't remember any calls for volunteers from colleges. The only aid, aside from $, was helping the numerous exchange students from Tulane adjust to life in Seattle for the year. Katrina was one big clusterfuck and the addition of mere skillless bodies would not have helped. Because the aftermath of Sandy has been a lot more under control an dorderly, the addition of those gofer helpers is actually useful.

Now for something completely different .....
My brother showed up at my place this afternoon with one of these .

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2012models/2012-V ictory-Hammer8Ball.htm

He wants me to store it for him in my place for the winter. He bought it today & he doesn't want his girlfriend or our Mum & Dad to know .... L O L

Seems he's afraid they're gonna freak ( I know they're gonna freak !) especially Mum.

But he's my brother so its no problem ....my ole lady's a bit freaked out ....not so much by the bike, but because she's gotta keep a secret ~;)
Its going to be interesting to she if she bursts from holding it in next time we pop by mums or my brothers place ........
