My mom and my aunt gave me some drink mixes, I just needed to provide the tequila. I did. But I discovered I don't like the peppermint drink. I tend to not like mint so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I've been listening to the Chemical Brothers' "Don't Think," which I need to do more often. I went to see "Black Swan" yesterday, which the song was in. That movie, honestly, is art more than entertainment, without the lesbianism and violence, which both have actual functions other than shock value in it. I can see why people are upset about the ad with Kunis and Portman kissing, but it actually has a place in the plot, albeit very short.

As for the movie, much of it is familiar to me, as I was en pointe for awhile. I know how to break in toeshoes and all about ballet. But honestly, Black Swan is about ballet as much as There Will Be Blood is about oil. Ballet is a backdrop to the larger story.

One of the girls in my department was telling me a week or so ago that her abusive ex-husband may have figured out where she is, and that she was afraid of the guy coming to her apartment and being physically violent with her again. I asked if she had a gun, she told me her boyfriend had a few packed up from where they moved. I urged her to go ahead and have them unpacked, and I also advised her on a couple of pistols she could buy.

B+

Good job suggesting to unpack the heat, bonus points for working a sales attempt in. The only thing you could've done better would be to ask her out, eventually making your own way into her home, for her own protection.

Then I advised her that if she couldn't get to the gun in time, that she should head for the kitchen where there are plenty of heavy blunt-objects and sharp knives, and told her how to go about dispatching the the ex using a kitchen knife (i.e.; where to aim).

She told me today that I really creeped her out in describing how she should take the guy out with a knife.

I may be out of line here, and the first half I posted was supposed to be amusing, but I'm going to guess a woman who's been roughed up abhors violence and hearing your description of most efficient defenses threw her off so much she'd rather get beaten than consider taking a life.

Sad, but unless you were giving her creepy smiles n shit while describing a good thrusttwistyank, I wouldn't dwell on it too much. If I were you, I'd just reiterate that life or death scenarios demand life or death action. If she's confident she's not in danger, fine... just ask her if she'd bet her life on it, and if she's be willing to be prepared.

If you can't do it in your head, good luck doing it for real.

Now, granted, I apologized for creeping her out, I told her that I just had her best interests and personal safety in mind, but the whole time I was thinking "the fuck were you doing telling ME you were having problems for, then?" I'm a little bit irked over this right now. Somebody came to me asking for advice, I gave it to them, and they got creeped out like I'm the weirdo.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother.

You can't not be yourself. Just don't let it hamper your work, or your social life.

You gotta know the ex- feels HE has a reason to stalk her ass around. What attracted her to him in the first place? Maybe that's the kind of help she really wanted, a person to dredge through her past with.

Why was she thinking he was going to come after her again? Find that out and you'll have a lot better answer to the current dilemma.

I think you did the right thing here. I would have suggested that she go to the range and either learn to shoot or sharpen her skills. I would have also talked to her about home self-defense strategies and tactics. As long as she doesn't live on the first or second floor of her apartment she may be safe from him climbing in a window and ambushing her when she comes home. So most likely, she will have time to get into a bedroom and barricade herself in and call 911. If the ex presses the issue and tries to enter the bedroom...she could just shoot through the door.

I'd also talk the her about getting her CWP for when she is not at home.

Then I advised her that if she couldn't get to the gun in time, that she should head for the kitchen where there are plenty of heavy blunt-objects and sharp knives, and told her how to go about dispatching the the ex using a kitchen knife (i.e.; where to aim).

I don't like the knife fighting idea. Unless you know what you're doing with a knife, most likely it'll end up worse for you than them.

Also there is the fact that she is a woman. Don't get me wrong...I don't know her from Eve. But judging from the fact that she escaped from an abusive marriage and lives in fear of him...it doesn't sound like she's Xena Warrior Princess. So with the fear factor and such...a knife could be worthless in her hands.

If I were her and couldn't get to a gun...I'd go for the blunt object.

She told me today that I really creeped her out in describing how she should take the guy out with a knife.

* She came to you because for whatever reason she thought you were knowledgable for whatever reason.
* You gave her your opinion and advised her on a topic that isn't pretty.
* Her own internal psyche did not like the advice and found it repulsive on some level.

Dude, it really sounds like it is her problem...not yours. Now since you said these things in a work environment, depending on PC your job is you may have to deal with her problem. And that's a whole other ball of wax.

Now, granted, I apologized for creeping her out, I told her that I just had her best interests and personal safety in mind, but the whole time I was thinking "the fuck were you doing telling ME you were having problems for, then?" I think you handled it correctly. She'll either avoid such topics with you in the future or get freaked out about her ex and come to you again. If she does I'd just let her know that it is not a pretty subject, and I'd point her in the direction of self-defense websites that reinforce that what you are telling is standard self-defense techniques.

I'll agree with you there. I tried advising her to buy one of the spring-assist-open pocketknives we sell to keep on her person, but she wouldn't have that because she was afraid of cutting herself with it. That's when I advised her to head to the kitchen in her house/apartment/whatever to where all the blunt objects and sharp knives are and then gave her my little instructional bit on how to take somebody out.

Swinging a frying pan is a no-brainer (no pun intended); just aim for any part of the head and let it fly. Using a knife takes a little more skill, which is where I stepped in.

Why was she thinking he was going to come after her again? Find that out and you'll have a lot better answer to the current dilemma.

Somebody had been going through her mail at her previous residence before she could get there to pick it up. It had been opened and rifled through, and her forwarding info was in it but somehow wound up back there... it's a screwy situation, I don't quite have all the details.

At 1/30/11 01:06 PM, TheMason wrote: I'd also talk the her about getting her CWP for when she is not at home.

CWP?

If I were her and couldn't get to a gun...I'd go for the blunt object.

I can see that. I was trying to present as part of the general idea of "get to the kitchen and find something." The scenario she presented was that the "guard dog" she has is the same dog she had when she was married to this creep, and the dog actually likes the guy, so it won't bark if he were to get into the home. So she could easily be face-to-face with the guy in short order, you can't exactly plan around something like that.

And that's a whole other ball of wax.

I covered my ass on this one; I went to the admin manager and let him know what was going on. He was kind of so-so about me telling her all this. He wasn't thrilled with me, but he didn't explicitly disapprove of it, either, he just advised me to be careful of how I told somebody that kind of info in the future.

and I'd point her in the direction of self-defense websites that reinforce that what you are telling is standard self-defense techniques.

I advised her this morning to go get a book on judo and study up, which is probably what I should have done to begin with.

Yep. It's the curse of the Good Samaritan!

I suppose so. :-\

It just pisses me off because this isn't the first girl I've worked with who's come to me with guy problems. Another girl came to me about two months ago saying she was concerned for her physical safety because she was taking night classes at her college. I advised her to talk to her fiance about getting her a good strong can of mace, or a stun gun, or SOMETHING to keep on her person when she's out late at night. You know what she tells me? She tells me that she talked to him about it a few months prior, but he hadn't done anything about it.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to what I did?

I went out and bought her a stun gun and one of these to keep on her keychain the next day. This girl is like a little sister to me, and I'm not about to let her go without if I can help it. Then I find out later on that her boyfriend responded to my doing that by saying "well that's one less thing for me to worry about." That stunned me, because I'm thinking that it's a damn shame that some other guy has to ensure YOUR fiance's safety because your to busy "worrying" about ensuring it yourself while make three or four times what I do an hour. Same goes with this girl I'm dealing with now; if her boyfriend was doing his job as a man, I wouldn't HAVE to tell her how to defend herself, she would already know or take comfort in the fact that he would protect her if anything happens.

I know chivalry is dead, but is the idea that a man should protect his wife THAT novel a concept this days?

Yeah, I think it is sometimes. Killed by both men and women.

First of all, we've become wusses in this country. A buddy and I were talking about Emos the other night. I gotta wonder if it all comes down to not learning that you're not going to be a superstar at everything you do so you get coodled. Then when you do fail for the first time you become a whiny bitch.

Even if you don't go Emo, men these days don't learn or think about self-defense and taking care of their familes. I mean look at all the dudes who argue in gun control threads about only the cops should have guns! Right there they are saying they are neutered and unable to take care of their families!

The second part is women have been raised to be independant of a man. That they don't need one around. But then they find themselves in an abusive relationship or stalked by some nutter...and they don't know what to do. I mean look at your friend, when you confronted her the hard reality she let emotion rule rather than logic and reason. Obviously she's not getting the comfort at home from her BF to make her feel safe.

As for me, right now my wife is Air Force basic training, and having gone through it myself I know what they are doing to her. So it's driving me batty that someone is getting in her shit right now...and there's not a damn thing I can do about it! Then I haven't heard from her since she left a week and half ago so that pisses me off that someone is keeping her and I from calling each other.

It makes me wonder if the two dudes dating these women you know would be bothered in my situation...

That reminds me of the time some woman crashed into me and she was simply distracted. Normally, she would have had to pay for the damages, but due to the fact that the car was worth more than it cost, we all had to spend money on a new car! I guess she might have had to pay for some, but that's still $500 out of my account!

too true. i got a pair of coworkers (18 and 19) and they are such bitches. one likes to whistle (poorly) and make a lot of noise all the time, and the other likes to ramble on about nothing, half the time, repeating the same phrase a thousand times until i yell down his throat to stfu, total lack of discipline. and of course when we have a lot of work to do, they bitch and cry about being overworked.

hah. no shit. when i go for a walk down the road, during the day time i wear a coat and i keep my metal fighting baton tucked in my sleeve. if someone attacks me with something short of a gun, they're gonna get a metallic bitch slap from a steel rod. after dark i also carry a powerful flashlight under my other sleeve to blind them. sadly, most lack the survival technique to know simple things, like debilitating attackers and at least how to defend yourself long enough for help to arrive. I used to keep a pair of plastic (but still sharp) claw things that were supposed to be used to grip large hunks of meat like roasts to pull out of its roasting pan, but I found them far more useful in creating shallow, yet excruciating scratches all over the weak flesh of those who would try to start trouble with me.

I eventually gave em up and got a baton because a baton doesn't scratch you through your clothes.

If all else fails a good weighted walking cane can be made into a very effective self defense tool. Better watch out, Grandpa's got a secret weapon in the form of a lump of lead on the end of his cane and he's gonna rattle your teeth with it if you mess with him.

It makes me wonder if the two dudes dating these women you know would be bothered in my situation...

most likely they would not allow their woman to get into such a situation. If there is one thing I know about a pathetic pig, is that they will hold their woman back, out of fear that she will advance in life and leave them for someone more successful.

Sunday was a long and strange day for me, man.

What made it even stranger for me was that her boyfriend came to pick her up from work, and he had 2 HUGE goons with him. If she lived close by, I could understand his bringing them ("oh they're just some friends I picked up on my way by, we're going out") but she has a 45 minute commute to get from our store to their apartment.... it kind of makes me wonder if she didn't tell him I creeped her out and he brought the guys with him to try and intimidate me.

Sorry, but I don't get intimidated very easily, much less by some metro-sexual who has to bring backup.

It makes me wonder if the two dudes dating these women you know would be bothered in my situation...

Based on what she's telling me, he's already trying to exercise some kind of control over her, so I imagine it would upset him greatly. The other guy? He seems to be a pretty level headed guy, but I imagine he'd freak too.

Could easily see and agree with that statement.

Speaking of plastic weapons, I saw a few of these at that gunshow a few weeks back, but didn't realize what they were until I was perusing they're website. Thoughts?

as long as the other person isn't wearing anything heavy, like a leather coat, you could easily take someone out with one of those, especially the punch knives. i find the plastic weapons don't have the penetration that steel or titanium has.

of course, plastic knives dont set off metal detectors so they are fantastic to carry into places like bars.

if i have to go into a bar, i take my throwing darts... of course the intended target is not the dart board. 6 darts, all razor sharp. try something and one might end up in your arm, leg, or even chest.

if all else fails, just wear a rope belt. they're more dangerous than one might think.

My reaction to those plastic knives was considerably less favorable than the one Korriken gave them. I just picked up one, showed it to my Dad who was standing next to me, and went "... why? A plastic knife? Are these people kidding?" I handled the one that is styled after the double-edged dagger, and it was as light as handfull of paper. I honestly don't see how it could stand up to the abuse shown in that video.

Personally? I'd rather have one of these.

Really.
What's the damn sense in coming into the lounge...if your not going to try to meet people and say hi etc. ?

Oh well, his loss, I know you and several others work hard to stay on top of the BS that happens Mal, but I couldn't help point it out. Although in hindsight...how can you call yourself a regular here, if you still don't know how the lounge works !?!
I just got in from rigging in Halifax.
We are getting pounded by a winter storm... a foot down since this after noon....another foot to 2 feet coming . The drive home was a nightmare...not because of my vehicle...its all those assholes with "all season" tires ...which in my family we call 3 season tires. THey're only good in the winter, when the roads are clear & salted.

It was ice down here, and the drive to school and back was terrible. I knew I had to go after everyone got a condescending email from the school chancellor about how classes were not cancelled but to use common sense. Now it's driving snow and is still very slick out.

at first I was just going to delete his post, but you seemed so happy to vent on him and I figured no harm was from it since he wont be seeing it. And I think I replied to a fly by retard the other day in much the same way so I know the therapeutic effects as well.

Although in hindsight...how can you call yourself a regular here, if you still don't know how the lounge works !?!

it's such a huge thread and if that's not intimidating enough, you can go a long time posting in the politics forum and seeing moderators and hard hitting regulars as the "most recent" posters of the big thread and just assume it's a slaughterhouse of arguments that the casual observer would want nothing of. I was intimidated by it when I began regularly posting in this forum too for much the same reasons. It wasn't until I actually checked some pages out and lurked a while before I realized it was a much friendlier place.

I just found it so weird that he would reply-with-quote the opening post of the thread and then start arguing with the 7-8 year old post itself...like anyone is still arguing those points this long after or that anyone even cared. I think the point just went way over his head, that we would all want to argue all day long and not want an enclave to have pleasantries with eachother outside of the typical left v. right or debate type of conversations. I may not agree with some of you in any thread on the first page of the forum, but I consider you all friends nonetheless because of this thread.

That's kind of a dick move on the chancellor's part, if you ask me. "use common sense" but classes are still going on? If your school has a strict attendance policy or a certain professor does, that means a lot of people with attendance problems will likely risk their safety to avoid getting an automatic F or something like that. And really, to me, my common sense has always said it's safe to drive so long as school is in session. I figured, they wouldn't ask me to come out if they knew my journey was going to be dangerous. That's common sense. Sending an email basically saying "we think it's safe for you to travel to school, but use common sense" it is kind of a confusing proposition for students who have probably always relied on that kind of information in deciding to do other things. If school was canceled because of an ice storm, I probably wouldn't call into work and try to get a few extra hours into the paycheck, or I wouldn't say "lets go visit the family across town!" first thing in the morning. There are plenty of other little decisions that I use "common sense" on based on my school telling me if its safe or not. they are a large institution that has been in the area longer than I've been alive, I'm sure they can easily weigh the safety pros and cons of having class that day.

In other news, it's 75.6°F, clear, and sunny out where I'm at. ^_^

A plastic knife?

plastic knives have their uses. they are reinforced with fiberglass, the stuff they put on cars and make boats out of. it's more sturdy than you think.

its made of a very hard plastic. it makes for decent small knives for self defense, but I wouldn't trust one for everyday cutting, maybe except for cutting twine or something that cuts easy. plastic makes for a great push dagger

the only problem with an ice pick of any kind is you can only stab with it. i mean, yeah you could pop someone in the head with it, but being so light it won't do a whole lot to them.

i'm a big fan of my steel collapsible baton and my push dagger. if i can't keep you at bay with swings from a solid steel rod, i can severely injure or kill you with a single razor sharp punch.

I'm not crazy, everyone else is.

pfft, it doesn't get cold enough to freeze a penis until at least -20
also, at -20 and colder if you bring boiling water outside and throw it in the air, it turns instantly into snow. It's super cool

There's been times I've hesitated coloring the snow for fear of penile petrifaction, though usually you can just put your back to the wind and cut loose. It's the swirls that'll get ya.

Neat!

I'm headed out to the Lake of the Woods in a few weeks, it'll be frigid enough to try. Prolly won't be any fun vids but it'll be an amusing spectacle for a bunch of drunkenly bored dudes in a cabin.

Dunno how many of y'all dig on metal, but Check it out anyways.

Reminds me of the type of music you'd hear from Abby on NCIS.

The roads aren't terrible here yet but everyone is driving like complete idiots.

Does it make sense to have to wait almost two months for a product from amazon

No. I've always had great customer service from them. Call their 800 number, they will probably refund you no problem. When somebody walked off with an amazon box fedex left outside my apartment last week, amazon refunded me the full price for the thing that was from their marketplace and resent the thing straight from them 1 day Saturday delivery (for free).
