"Britishness" is a concept the government has recently created in order to control us. Make us more patriotic and follow them blindly. As doing otherwise would single you out as non-british and essentially they want to make it a peer-pressure thing.
well shit, we spent 2 weeks talking about Britishness in my British Empire history course last semester. Actually, the unit was called "The Cult of Manliness"

Think about it. The island is called Britain. But inside that is a large collection of different customs, accents, dialects etc. Their is no such thing as a British accent. When people say "you sound British" 9/10 they are referring to a ('all right govna' stereotype) London accent and not a modern one! Because London itself has a few different ones now because of immigration.
"The Cult of Manliness" doesn't exist anymore. Men in the UK have been emasculated ever so subtly over the last 10 years. It became popular to express your emotions and get in touch with your feminine side and all of that rubbish. Sure people wore make-up in the 80s to rebel but now they actually put it on as if its normal. Basically metrosexuality and skinny jeans!
But don't get me wrong. I'm proud of the fact I used to have to carry bags of coal back from the shops when I was 5 and start the fire every morning before going to school. I got a tool set instead of an action man. Their was no such thing as being spoilt when I was a wean.
But its a pain because most people turn to you to fix things when they break. And that can be a pain in the arse some times.
Although all of the above has nothing to do with Britishness. This is what I am talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO2vcvBm7 Ls and I think thats a complete joke!

my bad... math fail still, very small. my bedroom alone in my apartment here is 10x12, so 120 sq ft, the theres a second bedroom a bath and a half, kitchen and living space. 600 is doable I suppose if you're talking about a studio without (many) walls, but it still seems small.
Nah
Two bedrooms, with bed, wardrobe, pc desk (and one with extra desk), bathroom, and living/dining room/kitchen with sofa, tv, book shelf, and a dining table for six. That's 450 sq feet.
And well, the 600 one has also two bedrooms, a bigger bathroom (yay big bathtub!) a bigger living room/dining room, a kitchen, and a balcony.
Dad has also bought a studio in BA, which is 27 sq meters big, 300 sq feet.

1 bed apts, studios, that sort of thing.
Even a website to start looking would be helpful.
I need an apartment for the upcoming school year (Georgetown bound).

Good luck with finding a spot Imperator.
But 'holyshit' Skunky makes it sound like there's some damn tough neighborhoods around there !!!
There are some rural places in Nova Scotia, where ... ummmm outsiders or as they cal them here CFA's are really unwelcome & people who have tried to buy property there & build business's etc. have been literally shot at, fire bombed etc.
Some areas are very clanish & don't take well to outsiders, not even tourists.
These are very rural areas, like up in the Highlands of Cape Breton Island, & some spots down the southern end of the Province, in the mountains in the Annapolis Valley region, & Digby Neck area.
Even places where my clan are mostly situated in Antigonish, take to CFA's slowly, you can live there 40 years & still you're considered a CFA. But its no where as bad as Northern Cape Breton , like in Capstick or Meat Cove !

Thanks for the tip.
Any particular areas I should avoid?
I've found some things in Arlington, Takoma Park, Dupont Circle, and Glover Park. Couple "roommate wanted" and "room in private house" deals.
Georgetown has a list of housing search sites and resources to look at that I'm going through.

Most of Arlington is good - Clarendon, Ballston, and Falls Church are all technically part of Arlington, but you'll see them listed under the name of the smaller region a lot, and they are all good areas to live in for various reasons. Dupont is actually a really nice neighborhood to live in - lots of nice older houses, good restaurants, shopping, etc. - but it's also a huge gay hotspot, so if you move there be prepared for people to assume you're gay. :)
Basically you want to avoid anything near the Anacostia River.
Weirdly enough, one way to see how good a neighborhood in DC is to see how many Starbucks there are. Starbucks does a LOT of research into crime rates and socioeconomic factors before they open a shop. If there are zero Starbucks in walking distance, it is probably not a safe neighborhood. I know it sounds strange, but it's true.

I disagree. [prepare for a speculation] I find that Britishness isn't a concept made by the government, it's a national sovereignty which exists within itself. It's absolutely true and will always be true, that all bachelors are unmarried, in the same way that all Britishness derives from Britain. It could otherwise be thought of as a conceptual scheme, that we categorise certain concepts as Britain to produce the conceptual scheme of Britishness. Although I do admit they are exploiting the concept of Britishness completely which is uncalled for.

Give me some examples of Britishness then? Off the top of my head the slave trade was a great British institution / Business for many years. And would not have existed if it were not for the British empire and colonialism. Is that what its all about? Thats going to unite nothing.
Hell I'm against their entire idea and institution that spawned Britishness, Britain, The monarch and all the other crap like that. Auld Lizzy should get off her pampered arse and do a shift down in ASDA then maybe she will have a ever so slight idea of what the people live like.

I was in/around the woodly park and national zoo area and got disoriented and wound up walking through some beautiful neighborhoods around there when I was in DC a few weeks ago. I was surprised how pretty DC was. Being from the country and only really visiting Detroit as a kid to see family I was a bit confused about trees and grass all over the place in the city. Obviously I wasn't in any bad neighborhoods.

Yes sir. In a lot of cases, it's better than a masters.
I think the difference is a M.A. in my field is more for high school teachers teaching Latin or ancient history, rather than for advanced philology research.
Being from the country and only really visiting Detroit as a kid
ouch. Reminds me of when I went to Cincinnati. Bunch of us were wandering the streets looking for a restaurant and we asked a police officer mounted on horse which way to go.
He told us to head down the alley to get to the restaurant and we all looked at each other funny. we had to explain to him we were from Detroit and walking down the alley is a no-no in Detroit.
Obviously I wasn't in any bad neighborhoods.
funnily enough, my grandpa was raised in the rough side of town......but back in the day it was just another suburb.
Speaking of which:
Anyone see that Chris Hanson report on Detroit? I thought it was pretty good.

That's... awesome economics knowledge. I shall use it in future microeconomic discussions.
Thank you, miss.
*bows*
That explains why the only starbucks I know is in Palermo.
Going to Starbucks is funny, there's a lot of Americans and foreigners, with their expensive electronic devices, and all the employees speak this funny Mexican Spanish. But it's quite costly, I have to pay like 3 tolls to get to BA, endure the awful traffic, and pay the rather high starbucks prices. That's why my family and I go once every three months or so.

She destroyed the Tories chance of ever gaining power in Scotland because Scots despise her so much. It's the same with Labour in South-East England, where it's basically Tory territory.

I considered it but I've bough fresh beans and ground them up myself or bought premium bags of coffee to see if it's the coffee or me...and I'm pretty sure it's me, I can't figure out what cream/sugar mixture works best. I don't actually have any creamer at home either, so maybe the skim milk is what is doing it? Or maybe it's because i used to use sugar in the raw? either way, I can't prepare my own coffee.
