Strange that you mention that... (again, NSFW).
What kills me are the videos on youtube where people take out a square sheet of chain-mail and shoot at it to show how non bullet-proof it is, which is kind of pointless given that chain-mail was easily defeated most medieval weaponry. I'd like to get my hands on a couple hundred or so large lock washers and make a sheet, just to see if it is bullet proof.

I think it's the latter. Great website, funny comic, but their connectivity sucks.

So in personal life news:
Lauren and I have moved into our new apartment. It's pretty small (haven't measured it yet, but I'd say it's around 400-500 square feet), but we're coming up with a lot of interesting ideas to save space and deal with the lack of storage. For example, instead of a regular kitchen table, we have a gateleg table that folds down to the size of a small end table, but folds out big enough to seat eight people if we need it to. This also doubles as the kitchen counter (the stove and fridge are in the living room and there's no proper counter there), and it has drawers for storage. We've got my old bookshelf doubling as a pantry, which holds a fairly large amount of food and cooking stuff, not to mention it looks great.
The bedroom is still pretty messy since we haven't had time to sort through all of our stuff, and when I was moving out my parents basically told me anything I left behind would be tossed out, so I still need to pare down my belongings a bit. I've found a few bulky things with decent resale value though, so it's not all bad.
On Sunday night, our cutting board was still elsewhere, so I decided I would make dinner without one. Just chick pea curry with big chunks of mushroom and tomato, no big deal. Unfortunately, when I was hulling the tomato (using my new super-sharp japenese petty knife) I was stupidly holding it in my left hand with the tip of the knife facing into my hand. Needless to say, as I was cutting, the knife slid all the way through the tomato and into my left hand. Lucky for me it stabbed me in the front side of one of my knuckles, where the flesh wasn't too deep and it couldn't sever any veins. It bled a lot, but eventually it stopped and I sealed it with some antibacterial adhesive and a bandage. Since the knife was so sharp, it's healing pretty fast, but it's still a bit sore. No big. I also used my gigantic gyuto to make a pork stir fry last night (with a cutting board) and it's awesome. Cutting meat is ten times as fast, the blade just glides through everything it touches.
I still need to get internet and VoIP set up, but once that's done and the apartment is de-cluttered, it should be pretty sweet. Both the previous tenant and the landlord thought the space would be too small for two people, but we're making it work.

O_o;
The home that I grew up in was barely 1200 square feet, and it was barely able to accomodate the 4 of us. I'm having a hard time imagining 2 people occupying a space less than half that very comfortably.

Want me to do the Nelson style point-and-laugh bit from the Simpsons? ;-D
If it makes you feel any better, I did something equally stupid (if not moreso) the other day before I went to work. I was testing the edge on one of my swords, and made the mistake of holding the sword by the blade itself, with my thumb resting on the edge. Nothing new for me, but I made the mistake of gripping the blade... and nicely filleted my thumb, right on that spot where I slashed it open last year.

Sounds like my dad's butcher knife.
I have no idea where he got this thing from, but he asked me to sharpen it for him once. I was trying to work it with a file to take a few nicks out of the blade, and the steel was so hard that the file barely touched it. It took me a while to work on it... but all I have to do is give it a couple quick passes back and forth on a 120 grit stone he has and it will fillet meat all day long.

I learned an important lesson today; if you get a computer from someone who is a smoker, take it apart and blow it out completely, lest the room you place it wind up smelling like cigarette smoke itself. BLEGH.

Moving out is always sort of different and interesting. When i first moved out of my parents house a month after graduating highschool, I ran around my apartment expecting what you described because of all those TV shows taking place in NYC and all the small grimy apartments you see in them. I was surprised how my previous idea of what an apartment would be like actually made me more excited and more impressed with the size. Obviously, it wasn't perfect and after a couple of years I was happy to find a better place when I moved, but for the first little while I was really happy about it. There is also the feeling of pride of being independent and on your own, making your own grocery decisions and whatnot.
Two people in a small space can be difficult on a relationship and it's not uncommon for a too-small place to cause a little friction between you guys. But I imagine it's not expensive and you'll be able to save money if you both are working full time and maybe if you are doing well you can move into a nicer place in the future.
Good luck!

If only I was so fortunate to have a brother in law who didn't smoke and used an apple computer. I'd be in hog heaven right now. ;-D
The majority of what's being blown out right now is dust with a hint of cigarette smoke, he did not take care of this computer at all despite what he paid for it. I'm about to open up a window and turn on a fan so my room can air out, my head is killing me.

a can of compressed air may be a cheap and quick solution. Unless you have radioative heatsink sludge that apple is up in arms about...who knows what terrible cancers it will give you or any apple tech.

It's probably a low estimate actually, since I'm not great at eyeballing floor area. I'll take some measurements tonight and figure out what it actually is.
There's a few things that make it easier though, obviously there's only one bed, the living room and kitchen are the same room (with no counters), we don't own that much stuff, we have a lot of shelves, etc.
I'd say it accommodates us, but I would want four people living in just twice the space, that'd probably be too tight.

Yipe. A small fillet is worse than a small stab wound by a long shot. Oh well, looks like we both know stuff we'll be careful not to do again in the future.

Hard steel definitely helps to get a sharp strong edge. I bet if you used a finer stone to abrade away any wire edge it wouldn't need sharpening for months at a time.
I learned an important lesson today; if you get a computer from someone who is a smoker, take it apart and blow it out completely, lest the room you place it wind up smelling like cigarette smoke itself. BLEGH.
Ugh. It really does seep into things, I can hardly imagine buying a smoke-saturated item equipped with a fan. Whenever I sell anything even remotely soft I advertise it as being from a smoke-free home.

Most definitely. It's a lot like stretching your legs after a long bus ride, except it's a bus ride that's lasted two decades.

Yeah, it's actually substantially cheaper than what we could potentially afford to rent, but this will help her to pay down her student loans faster, and after living long-distance for three years (and a bit), we've sort of gained an appreciation for being physically close, even if we're going to argue now and then.
Good luck!
Thanks!

If I could just figure out how to take this machine apart, I'd simply take it out into the garage and use an air compressor to bow it out. As it stands right now, that's not happening.
But on the bright side, I can run the new Ultra Mode in City of Heroes. Check this shit out.

How much server strain do you think they'll have from people jumping in that pool just to see the ripples? On a slow quest night it could happen.

I think I'd pay $10 to see that, just to see everybody in the local chat channel go... "Woah, trippy."

I may actually have a line on a decent job in San Diego so I can move there and get residency to save on Grad School sooner than I thought. Now if I can just find a place to live that's not ridiculously expensive...

In San Diego? It'll be easier to find an empty freeway in LA than to find a cheap place in San Diego....
then again, it is a buyer's market, so you may get lucky. Best of luck.

Thanks. I'm more looking to rent as I may need to move within a year depending on the situation. Hoping to find a sublet or something near UCSD campus. I'm hoping the student population will have something available.
