I enjoy cooking things that take hours and hours, but I was pretty limited in that - weekends only, since I didn't want to leave a stove on when no one was home. My five-hour beef stew has become a vanishingly rare sight at our dinner table.

Steve's office is having a chili cook-off, and I offered to help him put together a suitable entry. I told him that there was one particular kitchen toy that I did not already have and would need for the making of this awesome chili: a crock pot.

Behold.

About the same up here. I had to turn off the local evening news early tonight because all they were doing was coverage of this winter storm we're having.... we're supposed to get something like 10 inches of snow in my area by noon tomorrow, and people are flipping out about it, making me a nervous wreck because I've never driven in snow weather this severe.

All you people in here I mail to, I'm gonna get valentines/mardi gras packages and cards out tomorrow.

Can I just send you a box full of mardi-gra beads my sister brought back last year and you send me a topless pic?

I made chili on Monday. Leftovers are in the fridge and I may have them tomorrow afternoon.

I have a small crock pot that Mom bought me when I went to grad school for the first time. Haven't used it much but it works well and makes good food. It's a real bitch to clean though. I also have a toaster oven I got for Christmas but haven't used yet. Need recipes for both. My boyfriend may know some. He does domestic stuff so much better than me. XD

For once the snow is missing my region, unless we get lake effect.

We've had snow several times this winter, we're supposed to have some tonight with no accumulation.

I've been here my whole life... the last time we had anything THIS bad was back in 1993. Our power was out for several days, my dad had to get out on his farming tractor with the big 6 foot box scrapper to clear our road so people could drive because the county couldn't get out here to do it, and we had a SHIT TON of oak branches just split/crack in the middle of the night and fill our back yard narrowly missing the house.

Fun memories I don't care to repeat.

Well, I braved the snow in my little Honda this morning to get my pre-employment drug screening. Getting back was a little bit of a struggle, mostly because so many people had spun out. In an hour or so I'm headed south to Richmond, where they have at least eight inches already. I'm taking the truck, so Steve will have to survive with my hatchback for the duration of the weekend, but we're in walking distance to a bunch of stuff here so he should be fine even if it gets bad.

It's not the snow that intimidates me on days like this - it's the other drivers. People assume that because they have a 4WD vehicle they can just drive like they normally do.

When I get back, I will probably have some horror stories to tell, as well as some schweet ink.

One of my group members is currently in DC for an internship briefing. I hope she makes it up this weekend before everything is due. It's not like she can drive in the snow either; she's from Tampa.

??say what ??
what kind of a job are you doing where they have a right to drug screen you ?
'eh zeus cripes ! the US is becoming more of a dictatorship & less of a Democratic society every day !
Up here, most jobs can't screen you.
Those that can, usually get it because of dangerous conditions or jobs where trust is important...like police, , military installation access or members of the services, jails ...people who have access to drugs etc.

When we last had to get tested for working off shore, filming on an oil platform, all people had to be tested before we could get on their chopper. I started taking my morphine medication (even though i hate the damn stuff) just to fuck with the test results...worked great, even got me into the interview with Oil company , Production & Union officials, about my 'test results & drug problem'
When I handed them my "legal" perscription of morphine, it was all I could do not to laugh in their faces .
I'm allergic to most pain killers, which is why i perfer something else for pain...than morphine, but pot it isn't a drug recognised for my kind of 'pain'... I wonder when they classified pain as being different types ????

When I get back, I will probably have some horror stories to tell, as well as some schweet ink.

Hopefully you get home safe, our snow storm yesterday, went on for abotu 24 hours, but it was mostly a serious wind storm, with 4 to 6 inches of snow... damn cold out though !

When do we get a look at your new Tattoo ???

It goes on a State-by-State basis, but most states are what we call "at will employers". Which simply means that there is no "right-to-work" or anything, they can hire you and fire you for any or no reason whatsoever aside from discriminatory (yes, it's a bit hipocritical, I know) reasons such as gender or race. And they can thus require drug screening for employees as they can simply call it non-manditory and just not hire those who won't take the test. Nearly all jobs that require the operation of heavy machinery will require drug screening prior to hiring, and will either do random screens thereafter or simply have them happen after an accident.

OSHA is muy powerful... and more than a little over-the-top.

I remember watching a show about some guys going with their 4WDs out on the beach or sth, and the snob driving his jeep grand Cherokee got stuck, and had to be pulled out by the less elegant yet more powerful old Jeep.

4WD doesn't mean shit anymore. The SUVs and all wheel cars you see today are just as useless on a trail or in the snow as any other car on the road.

Best bet, SNOW TIRES for the love of kittens, people, SNOW FUCKING TIRES. The "all weather" crap that came from the dealership are useless! Fucking useless! ugh. Plus, buying a set of snow tires you spend what? $15 twice a year to have them swap the tires on your rims? And your tires will last twice as long because you won't be using them for 4 or 5 months out of the year. If you buy rims too, it makes swapping super easy and makes buying any new sets easier too, just walk in with the old tires on the rims, have them swap it and you're good to go for a few years.

If you think you'll be able to change them by whatever date your state/province says you need to have them off, go for the studs. For a few extra bucks per tire, you'll be able to get out of the iciest of parking lots in the winter.

More, a lot of places down here have drug testing. I took one when I worked at Target three years ago. The company pays for it, and basically you pee in a cup. They just won't hire anyone who doesn't take them. People complain, but on the same token, there are a ton of people, at least in my area, who can't pass one.

Now, the jobs I consider "real" jobs, like when I worked in Ohio, only have mandatory drug testing if there's a compelling reason (say, you come back from lunch break reeking of pot). Otherwise, there's no drug testing.

Fun memories I don't care to repeat.

yeah, it seems to me like back in 1996 we had an ice storm here and our power was out for over a week.

I just bought a ton of beads. I'm sending you some.
But I want nudie pics.... :-(

QUIT LOSING THE OLD ONES!

Sometimes the people on the floats throw the whole damn bag full of beads at you, instead of opening them & throwing the individual items.

*don't it - deliberate improper language used.

Oh yeah I know. We haven't had any parades yet, but soon very soon. I haven't gone to one in years but the last time I went, we damn near filled the back of our pick up truck with throws. (between the 5 of us)

and I got all of my beads honorably. kept every bit of clothing on.

I aint gonna say I didn't wear something a little low cut though.......................

If only they would release the IP address's used, my brother seems to think he may be able to do some kind of tracking ...
I wonder how you get this type of info ladies & Gents ????

If the e-mail address you have NG registered under isn't giving you password reset messages, don't worry about it.

What that means is that someone is trying to log into your account through NG over and over then being locked out.

Change your NG pass to something crazy then run virus scan to pick up anything.

the nuclear winter that cancelled out global warming was caused by GW dismantling truther networks. truth isn't politics, is it?

I love winter. Sorry to the rest of you, but what can I say? There's just something about chilly weather that makes me all giddy inside....not like that warm weather garbage. I'm miserable in anything above 75, but I'm part Serb, so maybe it's just because the fur makes everything feel 20 degrees hotter.

I also yell at kids to stop playing on my lawn.......I don't think there's a connection though.

Oh well, another meaning for "no pain, no gain" I suppose.

As long as we can prevent him from a 3rd term, we'll be OK. But he may try to steal an election again and prevent some DAmoKracee from hapnin!

....I think I stretched that one a little too far......

I can attest to that, last year after I sliced my thumb open they had me drug tested to make sure I wasn't on something when it happened... which I thought was interesting because they waited until two or three days after the fact to drug test me. Of course all I had to do was a mouth swab for mine, depends on the company I suppose.

What really got me was that they wrapped up my thumb as best they could, sent me to my doctor a few miles away, and somewhere along the line there was a mis-communication about the drug test. Apparently the mouth-swab test is supposed to be given on the work-site premises, but the doctor made me submit to a urine test before they'd treat me.

So I'm standing there in the little bathroom they've got for drug tests... cup in one hand... equipment in the other.... and I feel something really warm on my hand. I look down and my temporary wrap had shifted, causing my cut to open up and bleed all over the place. That nurse barely got her sample to work with, and one patient was REALLY worried seeing me walk out with my hand covered in blood after walking down the hall perfectly fine. ;-D

Also; as Lewis Black once said, "Weatherman is the only job you can have where you can be wrong 100% of the time and not get fired for it." Well... there's probably a lot of weather people in Nashville right not surprised as FUCK to be right for a change. We had 6 inches of snow overnight, and getting to work this morning was a BITCH.
