Agreed. Zippos are more about status than they are functional ability, especially with people who smoke. But the reality of the situation is... they're cool to look at and collect, but a pain in the ass to maintain. Thus why I recommend the Ronson Jetlite... I've got a few of them around for everyday use, and one in my toolbox. Cheap, reliable, and they don't dry out.
Want to make it waterpoof? Wrap a piece of duct tape around it to seal it shut, problem solved.

damnit; i'm supposed to be writing and studying, not trolling the forums.
If you mean fuel efficient while burning, no, not really, since a wick system is already pretty good.
The main problem you're going to have with a Zippos is fuel loss through evaporation. Basically, you need to make a case that's sealed better. However, since the covers aren't spring-loaded, this is going to be a pain in the ass no matter how you do it. One idea off the top of my head would be to dip-coat the edges of the lid and body of the case in rubber, then use an elastic band to keep the lighter shut tight.
It should be noted that doing this will result in a higher partial pressure of butane inside the case, and I'm not responsible for any injury or damages done by modifications you make to your own lighter.

No, pesos. US dollars and argentinian pesos have the same symbol, that's why I say USD instead of $ when referring to dollars.
1 USD = $ 3.806 ´
They did take me by not taking all the leaves and stuff from my broccoli DAMN BOLIVIANS.
I didn't pay them since they didn't have change, I am going to pay them once inflation gives me back what they took me by charging me for leaves and branches. =D

That's still relatively expensive for bananas, but not a bad deal for apples and oranges, although I guess living in Argentina you're going to get cheaper and better fruits for the most part.
Also, I did a comment at your blog today.

Today at our local village fruit & veggie stand banana's were 59 cent per pound.
That's Canadian money. $1.00 Canadian is trading at $3.595 Argentinian pesos those must have been big banana's .
I get a chance later today or tomorrow, I'll go buy 5 banana's & see what they cost here in Canadian funds.
Comparing prices world wide for similar goods...I like the idea.

Except butane isn't used in Zippos, it's naptha. Unless you're talking about the Z-Plus Insert, in which case... I WANT ONE. I've got this in s box domrehrtr and I'd love to carry it on me, but I've had one too many galding rashes from Naptha leaking out to want to carry a normal zippo ever again.

Yeah sorry, that's what I meant. It's still volatile though, which means you'll get a higher vapour pressure, especially if you keep it in your pocket.
I was getting my lighter fuels mixed up there.

i kinda figured. plus i had painted mine possibly making mine even less sealed because of chips (possibly making it tighter because of paint widened rim?) and general hinginess. i had thought of finding someway to apply some sort of rubber coating but never thought about the fact that the hinge isn't particularly efficient. where can i get rubber?

Plasti Dip. My only concern about dipping a zippo would be melting the rubber or it just peeling off altogether once you use the lighter... I mean, they get hot after a few seconds.

I own a zippo, it gets warm after a minute of so, but I wouldn't call it Hot !
The cage area where the wick is gets quite hot..but if the whole damn lighter hits 500 + degrees I believe your going to have a whole lot bigger problem than the rubber outside melting, your going to over heat that fuel resevoir & I don't know at what temperature white gas ignites, but I've never been able to do it, even when after 3 or 4 minutes the body of my zippo becomes uncomfortably warm.
I don't know what a human hand can take heat wise & i expect it will vary depending on callus skin etc...but somehow 500 + degrees will probably burn anyone !
I don't believe the get to that temperature under normal use.
Has anyone ever tried simply sealing the lighter in something airtight ?

That's because you live on the arctic tundra... there's no way a zippo could get as hot as what I'm talking about. ;-D
My dad was working on some fairly heavy polypropylene rope to make a tieout for our pit one day, and he needed a small open flame to melt the ends of the rope. The little disposable bic he keeps in his truck wouldn't do the job, so I gave him my zippo to use. He proceeded to strike it, set it on the porch and use it continuously for several minutes. In that time, it got hot enough that you couldn't handle it with bare hands, we wound up having to leave it there for a few minutes before we could do anything with it.
your going to over heat that fuel resevoir & I don't know at what temperature white gas ignites, but I've never been able to do it, even when after 3 or 4 minutes the body of my zippo becomes uncomfortably warm.
Because there's not enough oxygen inside the resevoir to help set the thing off, it's crammed full of cotton and sealed shut inside the housing of the liter itself, with the only exit being the hole the wick gets through.
Has anyone ever tried simply sealing the lighter in something airtight ?
Like I said; duct tape, or 100 Mile and Hour Tape would suffice, I would think. Just fuel the thing up, wrap it shut, and then toss it in your camping kit.
Of course, I don't know how effective even duck tape would be considering that Naptha sits right on my shelf at work next to mineral spirits, paint thinner, and denatured alcohol as a paint stripper/thinner/cleaning agent. It might seep through the lighter and siolve the glue holding the tape. :-\
Gonna have to experiment with that.

So this Sunday at 1pm EST I will be graduating from the University of Michigan. You're all invited to the commencement (it's in Crisler Arena) and the bar afterward.
Now to figure out how to pay back my loans with a Bachelor's Degree in Music... >_>

in Michigan no less!
Seriously though, congrats!!! I'm working on my last few credits this year (and by last few I mean 39) I have 2 more final exam periods (one real final, one presentation) and I'm done for the semester. Then there's a winterim course followed by another semester of 18 credits...all in the name of graduating on time. I still need to write some application essays for law school.
Graduate school seems to be the goto_AndPlay for my friends with the economy as it is. You can usually get financing through federal and private loans to cover living expenses and whatnot beyond tuition and you basically stay out of the real world for another 1-4 years.
I'm going on a ski trip with some Newgrounders next week to celebrate/be social because if it weren't for this loft in my condo I'd be a basement dweller.

I would love to spend another few years in grad school and let the economy fix its ass... that and a PhD would vastly increase my job prospects. I just don't know what I want to do. I'm thining of a Science and Technology Studies vein (it's like Anthropology for S&T) working on the sociopolitical ramifications of things like the internet, bionics and the coming Technological Singularity... but I also want to write music and do all that stuff, too.
Decisions, decisions...

Seven - Steve is mailing out all the long-distance gifts tomorrow, but I'm holding yours back in the hopes that I can finish up one last thing before I have to ship it. I figure I still have a few days before I absolutely MUST ship it to get there by Christmas.

Sorry to not be joining in on the lighter topic all, and only plugging my stuff but...all I could add is "fire good, fire fun" since I really have no personal need for a lighter.
Thanks for the thumbs up on the column, honestly I liked it but am not sure it's one of my best, but obviously they liked it since they featured it (or they're just content desperate) hopefully I can bang one out later this week.

Yeah, its 212 at sea level to boil water.
On the subject of Banana's , I stopped in to buy some veggie's, & I got 5 banana's.
They weighed 1040 grams ( about 2 & a half pounds ) they cost $1.36 Canadian . I'm not sure what that is today in Argentinian Peso's .
IF I had bought them up at the big box super market today they would have been $0.89 a pound or about $2.25 cents !! I have no idea why the local veggie stand can sell banana's for so much less than the big grocery chain...I can see it for local produce, but banana's sure as heck aren't 'local' in this frozen place
I really have a hate for winter :'(
