so, I am currently looking for employment again. Been denied by one law firm for a paralegal position, and nobody in town is hiring.
I've been cruising through the papers (the classifieds here are only like 1/2 a page), craigslist, the penny saver, google. It's tough not knowing where anything is. I've sent my resume to people like 2 hours away from me lol.
Now I'm considering doing stocking at the walmart. I don't want to deal with customers at all. I'm sick of people. Tell me where to put the boxes and give me more than minimum wage. There's a hanneford too
That's a pretty strange story Rydia. I can't think of any time where I've had a similar situation like that happen to me specifically. I remember a foreign guy (he said he was a student) turned up on our doorstep trying to sell something or other (purportedly) some time ago, but he was gone in a few minutes as far as I know. I didn't think it particularly odd. I think around here, when something is amiss, everyone notices and does something about it, like spreading the word. We're not a close-knit community, I think we can just all tolerate each other. I hope it all works out for you anyway. I would try to be positive about it, but I can see me answering that knock just the same in the near future.
Like Malachy said, we're all suckers at some point I think, whether it's the eery offers from people going door-to-door, technological attacks on your funds via phone or email, or those bullies at school that offered you "protection packages" at delightful rates. I guess we just have to learn, which when you think about it, is a bit of a shame.

I'm not sure if I've said before (I probably have, it was somewhat of a life highlight, which does speak volumes about me), but I took (roughly) a year out of education between October 2006 and September 2007. During that time, I was looking for a job. Now, it was in no way the same boat as the one you're in now, because yours is probably in far choppier waters, but it was an increasingly dreary time for me.
I'm not going to bore you with the details, that run in a similar manner to some sort of unfunny Laurel and Hardy imitation, but the most memorable sequence involves me being refused for a work at a volunteer community hall.
I wish you luck. It's good you have the lower options in mind, but hopefully you won't need to use them. It's always better to, to borrow a phrase from motivational posters around the nation, "aim higher" after all.

Rydia,
First--I'm happy things didn't go through worse things.
Second--
You NEVER let a stranger in your house for any reason. People can hear you scream, "FIRE!" outside of your house... people can't hear it as well inside your house. Or worse-- people may ignore your cries.
and you don't cry "help"-- always "fire."
I hope your BF was there. Or at least a family member.
Being nice is good. But you can always be good outside of the house....
Seems like both of you were stuck in a bad situation. But I feel bad for the guy, although-- you got to develop a crust and be stern and just say no.

WAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOO!
Got the Internet back after a week without it after my ISP was a cock and cut us off for soemthing that wasn't our fault.
I spent the weekend catering a Live ActioN Roleplay Event. It was fun, lots of absolutely hilarious and Mad people running around in silly costume hitting each other with Latex weapons. And women going around in leather armour that didn't leave *that much* to the imagination.
I am also the champion of free fall bunk bed parachuting where you fall out of your top bunk during the night, wake up half way through the fall, ' think ' wtf?' and face plant the floor, give yourself a nose bleed and almost give yourself a concussion all while the door to your room is open and a bunch of dudes dressed up as Skaven see what;s happening and cheer you on.
MY weekend was awesome. I also earned 200 quid.
Much <3 to you all. I must now go and panic over the presentation I have to give on Wednesday.

I know...
It's a drug, really... I personally can stop internetting for 2 days. But by day 3... I get the shakes. But I've done 2 to 3 weeks of disciplined cyber-abstinence sucessfully.

Oh yeah it is. This winter when the power was out for like a week from the ice storms internet is by far the thing I missed most. There was just nothing to do besides read and be cold. More than once I looked out the window to the ice covered wasteland and thought "I miss northrend." That's an artic area in Warcraft.

Rorthrend is a WoW reference, I believe.
The only thing I know about WoW doesn't go beyond what I saw from South Park. And thank God-- I don't have that addiction.

Northrend is the area that came out with the latest expansion and thus where the high level players spend a lot of their time. And as for that Southpark episode, occasonally some genius will still come into the trade chat looking for the sword of a thousand truths. It boggles my mind how easily some people are amused.
And now comes the annual year progress testings based off your performance, coworker's opinion, and a variety of other things.
I probably won't do too bad, but still, I don't want to be canned.

Well, I started the process to get my money back today. Surprisingly, they actually gave me the required receipts and cancellation policy as per FTC standards.
I don't know what I'm kicking myself more over, him coming in or me buying something. I've been reading reports about the company though and these people just kinda let themselves in. I think I know what happened--I was uncomfortable enough I was paying him to go away. I haven't seen any more of these folks around, so I guess they've moved to the other complexes in town, assuming they're still here.
Actually, yesterday morning before 9, there was a knock on my door. Probably the same people. I freaked out and stayed in bed. I should have done the same. But I spoke to some friends today and they were suckered awhile back too. Their situation was a little different. One woman actually got her magazines. The other was suckered into a 4-year subscription to In-Fisherman, but her husband likes it and didn't want her to cancel, so she's stuck. Some other things they did say was that nothing was taken, and if I only gave him cash, he doesn't have any account numbers, which can be a lifesaver in my case.
Also--if at first you don't succeed, rock climbing is not for you. I have the scrapes to prove it.

rock climbing is awesome and you know it.
I taught heather how to rock climb last semester at the school climbing wall. The first day, she couldn't make it more than a few feet up. By the end of the semester she was able to climb all the way to the top of the wall (~25 feet) a few times in one session.
I started rock climbing when I was in elementary school, going to a guide company's inn which used a giant 2 story chimney in one of their buildings to teach us how to climb, and then brought us out on climbs once or twice a summer. I also took a rock climbing PE course in community college. We met the instructors at different sites every week and climbed. And I had a few hippie friends at summer camp and we went climbing a couple of times. Once we couldn't find the main wall of a mountain after a whole day of bushwhacking and settled on a tiny wall on the other side of the mountain. Then some really angry birds showed up and we left.

If you go for either, and you absolutely do not want to be bothered for customers, apply for the night shift or make specific mention of it somewhere on the form. That's Wal-Mart (and Lowe's as well if the store does enough business), I'm not sure about Hanneford since there's not one close to me. One word of advice, though; be prepared to work your ass off.

I just watched the season ending episode of "Chuck," and I'm just WAITING to turn on the news in the morning and hear how the Wachowski Brothers are suing the makers of the show for use of the line "... I know Kung-Fu."

Spoilers don't bother me, really. And it was badass, we just finished watching.
We were loaned a copy of Season 1 a while back and kind of zipped through it, caught up to the current episodes early this season and have been watching it faithfully ever since. Monday is our big TV night - Chuck, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory, and Heroes. The only other show we never miss is Bones on Thursdays.

Customers aren't too bad as long as you're not on the register or something, working over in hardware the ratio of assholes to good people is pretty well in my favor (especially if you're very friendly and willing to stop for a minute and talk with them). But if you want a stocking job you're looking at having to be on overnights (which does pay a little better then the day shift remember) or you're going to be part of the ICS crew (which due to their new system actually does very little stocking these days, mostly you work with their backroom processing system now). There is truck unloading, which can be pretty physical and back breaking work. In the end it's all up to you, but the best paying gigs are the gigs where you're out there with the people.
Anybody been watching Dollhouse? Anyone? Goddamn it...how can you fucks let another good Joss Whedon show go down?
Although FOX swears they aren't canceling it, we'll have to see I guess.

I think what he did was bad ass, but... and as cynical as this sounds... when his dad asked Bryce what they had done to the new Intersect, and all Bryce had to say was "You don't want to know," my mind IMMEDIATELY went to weapons-system. I wasn't sure what, but now in retrospect it kind of makes sense to take the thing in that direction.
Heroes
I'll watch that on occasion. I was pretty surprised to see that Satan incarnate can shape-shift now.

Bones kicks ass. Pure and simple.
This needs more CSI MIAMI.
Or at least some Burn Notice.
I'll settle for Law and Order.
The original, mind you, the spinoffs suck.

I have to give props to Burn Notice. Because without it, I never would have thought to buy rubber shotgun rounds (episode "Hot Spot"), and I never would have looked at common household supplies and appliances in such a light.

Yeah.
It also gave a good reason why Bruce Campbell needs to come back into the limelight.

Goddammit, I think I need new brakes. Or at least brake pads; I doubt I've done much damage since the metallic noise just started. Over the past three weeks, on and off, I occasionally heard a noise that kind of sounded like a low groan or whine or something. It did sound like road noise at some points, but it wasn't. It wasn't constant and only happened every now and then. I asked my dad what he thought and he said just keep an eye on it.
Well, today I could just be driving down the street, and I heard a high pitched metallic noise. That's new, and definitely not road noise. I know pads will probably run me about $150 or so, and I can afford it, but dammit. I hope I didn't screw something up like a rotor. Doubtful since they're disc brakes and this particular noise just started. I'll ask him tomorrow what he thinks.
And here I had been planning to go to Columbus Wednesday. Not to mess around or anything, I have business there. But I'd rather not end up in a guardrail.
I just looked on the cheaperthandirt.com website for ammunition, and found the rubber bean bag shot that I was after for about $14 cheaper than that deltaforce website I linked to a while back. BUT...
This makes me cringe, as does this, this, and especially this.
Just the THOUGHT of a 12 gauge hollow point slug being fired at somebody is fucked up in my opinion. Because when you stop to think about it, that's roughly a 72 caliber hollow point bullet opening up and mushrooming it's way through a target.
It kind of makes you wonder what humans as a race could accomplish if we'd put our minds and resources towards finding new ways to help instead of killing each other.
At 4/28/09 12:08 AM, RydiaLockheart wrote: I hope I didn't screw something up like a rotor.
Most brakes (drum brakes anyway) have a built in scraper piece designed to put out that metallic screech noise once you've removed an ample enough bit of braking material as to require new pads. It's not designed to harm the wheel itself, just to get your attention. You've still got enough brake pad left to prevent an accident, but none the less, I wouldn't let it go on for very long.
That's me, though, my experience with car maintenance is limited. Check with your dad, or your mechanic.

No, but usually he needs about a year to really figure out what the tone is and where he wants to go with it. It seems like that first year or so of a show he's throwing so many balls in the air in terms of things it CAN be, or ideas it CAN encompass. Then season two he figures out what works, what he needs, and charges forward. I also hear those assholes won't air the actual season finale now too.

I saw the first episode. It felt like it was kind of trying to be Le Femme Nikita. Plus how they had the leaks in her memory start coming it felt completly formulaic.
