I have one on the left side of my chest over my heart, & going over to my nipple & its about 8 inches top to bottom...it's a phoenix with my daughters names inside the 'body'.
I've got another on my hip which is my zodiac sign like its exploding from the top of my right leg.

I don't know about 'deep meaning' but for me I like something 'personal' to be involved...also something others don't have...even thought the 'theme' maybe out there the look itself is unique.

Am I the only person here who thinks that's bullshit?

I get really irritated at the whole "What does it mean?" thing. It doesn't have to mean anything. It's something that you like enough to have on your skin. There is no meaning behind my decision to get the White Horse of Uffington tattooed on my ankle. I saw it in my Arthurian Legends class and thought it looked awesome. I suppose if I wanted to be a pretentious douche I could talk about how it represents my love of literature and ancient cultures, or some other rot. But I'd be lying if I said any of that nonsense was why I got it.

People who get "deep" tattoos tend to LOVE to talk about them. And it pisses me off. Besides, 90% of the "deeper meaning" tattoos I've seen are also incredibly shitty, awful tattoos.

Get something you think looks cool. I guarantee you if you try to get something meaningful as your first tattoo, that will be the tattoo that you wish you'd never gotten. The things we are passionate about change as we get older, especially philosophical aspects. I will always love Batman, and my Batman tattoo will never be a source of regret for me; my first tattoo was religious in nature, and although I don't regret it per se, I often wish I had saved the space for something else, because I am no longer religious.

My knowledge in the field of tattoology is very slim indeed, and you might make a correct guess that I have absolutely no experience in the field. I don't really know how it's done, if they are possible to easily remove or anything like that. I do believe you need to be eighteen or over in the UK to get one legally, but that's pretty basic knowledge if true.

I am with Skunky though that a tattoo need not really mean anything, though if you wish that to be for whatever, I have no problems with that! An associate of mine recently got a tattoo of a wolf a few days after showing me some of his possible ideas. His reason? He just likes wolves. It's not too bad, though a bit too big for my taste...

I still have free train travel for another week, so I'll meet up with you for this strip Dungeons and Dragons T-N-T. I've been meaning to show off my... erm, newly refurbished personal topiary to someone.

If you get a tattoo, you should assume it is permanent. You can get most things covered up if you find a skilled artist, and there's laser removal, but it leaves scarring and often a "ghost" image of the tattoo.

As for how they're done, the skin is pierced to a shallow depth and ink is introduced. Tattoos are open wounds for the initial healing phase, and should be treated with care. There are industrial tattooing machines that move the needle up and down very quickly, and then there are hand-poked tattoos (still favored by tribal tattooists and those seeking an "authentic" experience) where the artist takes a sharp point and manually pricks the skin. And yes, it can be quite painful. Or totally painless. It depends on where you're getting it and what your skin is like.

That's because 90% of the tattoo artists out there are incredibly shitty, awful tattoo artists who should be drug out in the street and SHOT. You can go out and buy all the stuff you need to start tattooing today if you want to, and not have to be apprenticed to anyone to do it.

The things we are passionate about change as we get older, especially philosophical aspects.

And the same thing goes for personal taste. In ten years time, are you still going to like having that White Horse of Uffington tattooed on you're ankle if it doesn't particularly mean anything to you? That's my main argument against tattoos for the sake of it over personal meaning.

But all that aside, I don't mean to bash you for yours, skunky. I think you've got some nice ink, regardless. :-)

My husband is still very fond of the raven on his shoulder and the cat-face tribal band on his arm, and he's had the former since 1995 and the latter since 1999. And I've had my arm piece for a number of years now, and my love of it hasn't budged.

But every SINGLE person I know with a tattoo of a loved one or a deep "meaningful" representation has regretted it within 2-4 years.

Anecdotal, sure, but I stand by it.

I can agree with you on the tattoo of a loved one, especially with regards to names. If you have your significant other's name tattooed anywhere on your body, I question your sanity.

The coolest "meaningul" tattoos I've seen were on a co-worker's husband. The guy has a sleeve on his right arm of various stuff, but worked into it he's got a barcode tattooed right above his wrist. I asked him what it was, and he said "It's styled after the barcode security cards we used to carry at the factory I once worked at. I absolutely HATED that job, and it's a reminder to me that I can do better than that to support my family."

He also had one off to the side on the same sleeve that was a stylized version of his daughter's sonogram picture, done in this sort of Edward Mucnh "The Scream" style.

Anecdotal, sure, but I stand by it.

To each his own. :-)

I was originally going to say something like "chalk me up with the pretentious douches but I think that's better left to stuff like clothing and hairstyles" and then make a joke about polka-dot shirts and jheri-curls but... after remembering Dan Malo's tat of Raccoon Mario I just thought about how neat it would be to have one of a pixellated 8-bit Mega Man. I've had a robohomocrush on him since I was like 5 or 6 years old so... yeah, I can dig it.

Otherwise I'd want something "meaningful" like the '7 heavenly virtues' for example, just to recall all the qualities I hardly ever have but know I should. I'm egotistical, mean, greedy, immoderate, foul, impatient, lazy... and I think that maybe if I had a constant visual reminder of the opposite of all those things then I'd be a lot quicker to realize my present behavior and hopefully change it for the better. I dunno.

like i was gonna say, chalk me up with the pretentious douches :P

While I'm not big on tattoos, I can imagine having anything done in the style of The Scream makes it cooler. Even with all the (possibly overdone) parodies and references in popular culture, I still love that painting. I've got to say that doing a sonogram version of it is pretty unique in my book, an interesting variation to say the least.

I wonder if having some form of my favourite painting being tattooed on me would be a good idea...

... bearing in mind I usually point to
this as my favourite painting.

That's insane. Really, every time I pick up a pencil it just smudges everywhere (worse than when I use pens anyway), so I can't imagine making something big like those pictures using pencils. I think it's safe to say it requires a fair bit of talent anyway.

And what the guy put in that little mini-profile bit on the right near the top had me nodding with a glum expression on my face. I'm not an artist, but I can imagine that's largely a truth.

The weather mostly ended up dodging us here, though we still have heavy wind, and we had some good downpours. There were two tornadoes by Dayton, though.

I'm also a Wiccan, but I haven't practiced much ever since getting out of college. I need to get a new tarot deck since The Chariot drove itself out of mine. (Funny how it was that one.) My readings usually have been ambiguous at best, but when I was able to successfully predict a miscarriage, I never doubted the cards again.

Some people are really funny about the cards and don't want people touching them. I don't understand that. If you're doing a reading for someone else, they're supposed to shuffle the cards, since the deck apparently responds to them and not you. I have noticed readings work better if I hand the cards to someone for a few shuffles. Of course, you also have a bunch of pretentious assholes who insist on nobody touching their things because your energy will screw them up. Some things I can understand people not wanting others to touch, such as athames, seeing as those can get expensive.

My Jewish friend gave me this whole thing of matzo bread...
one of the blandest breads I've eaten, but I think he was shocked how delicious it could be with avocado and cream cheese...

I even ate it with salsa (like a chip)-- and now he's trying to get his family to make the avocado and cream cheese (it's easy to make-- one big avocado plus one small block of cream cheese... some salt and garlic powder...)--

but who knows that will be kosher for them.
But anyone who's got matzo on hand, try that... it's delish.

Well I hope I didn't come off as one of those "pretentious douches", but what holds me back from getting a tattoo is that fear "regret" you pointed out, but in a different direction.

Interests change throughout life. It's obvious enough to see how much we've all changed mentally. And what we once thought was "cool" or believed we would always be "really into" is no longer so.
(Which is why I'm unsure if I wanna go with Batman or video game tattoo....I'm really into gaming and comics now, and I would like to think I still will be down the road...but I also use to really be into football and romantic comedies...)

Which is also why I'm hesitant to get something I think looks "cool". Because I may not think its cool later on in my life. Or rather, while its cool, it doesn't hold the same appeal that it did back when I first got it, therefore no longer making it "worthy" to have on my body.
(In the same way that say you can get really into a song, but think "meh" after you have heard and seen it way too many times. I don't want that happening...the 12th time I lift my shirt to take a shower I look at the thing and go "meh"...)

So I just figured, my best shot for not falling into the realm of regret was to get a tattoo of something that was "deep" or held profound meaning for me personally. I always just figured that it would be one of those things I wouldn't regret or change my mind on say 10-20 years down the road... (of course, I could do exactlythat, but I think getting a "deep" tattoo may present the smallest chance of that happening...compared to say the other two types of tattoos...)

I may be wrong though... I have yet to "live and learn"...
