I would like to point out my previous posts were not complaints.
Here is a shot looking at the river on Tuesday less than 1 week ago !

more, would you be looking at me funny if I were to say those pictures look slightly magical? Obviously the snow one at least speaks for itself in that regard, but for the others... admittedly I like the trees. I just like looking at trees... I think they tell a lot about where a picture has been taken, or where you are if you're looking right at it. I should really stop finding meaning in things like trees.

In other, slightly more depressing news, my Grandad collapsed this morning. What's more, he pretty much takes full-time care of Grandma since she's had problems for a while, so she's had to do stuff for herself today. I'll have to get my Mum to ring wen she gets back from wherever. The problem with us offering any help is that the grandparents don't live locally; it's about a two-hour drive.

This in combination with things like my friend being fired, all the stuff going in the world, make this an unhappy birthday indeed :(

I also like trees.
I love my backyard in summer, I've seen ospreys take fish right out of the river there. I have Bald Eagles that sit in a tree right across the river ,it would be on the left side of the frame I've showed in those photo's.

Sorry to hear about your family crisis. But at least he has only collapsed & hopefully will recover. I am hoping to get home to Cape Breton in a couple of weeks to see my grandmother.

Happy Birthday Scarab...I have no good photo of cakes or goddies...hopefully Seven will be by today, she seems to have quite an assortment of 'goddie' pictures.

Wow, that's cool. I like looking at Bald Eagles. I believe I've only ever seen one, and that was in a bird park, so I would be slightly mesmerised if I could see some in my backyard. My backyard is that of the Middle England postmodern housing estate style, so no defining features really. It's a shame my image of (at least relatively) clear rivers with all this life around has been shattered by spending time on British canals, which are just so dirty it's sometimes a bit of a miracle when you see fish.

Yeah, he's staying in hospital overnight apparently. Hopefully he'll be back home soon. I wish I saw them more often really. I think the last time I saw them was Christmas 2007 due to me being busy all the time. After my exams in June, I should be able to visit :)

Happy Birthday Scarab...

Thanks!

That was a quick response to the emergency call. I am pleased with said goodies.

I found what appears to be dungeons and dragons cake.

Now that is a cake and a half. I'm not sure whether to play around with it or just get straight down to the eating.

I'm going to go make those little sausages wrapped in cheese and then wrapped in a croissant for breakfast if you want some of those as well.

While I'm not familiar with this concept, I will go for it. It does sound quite nice, and I'm always open to new things.

Well, I am on two days of the year at least: my birthday and New Year.

More - That is a fucking awesome picture! I don't care about fuzzy, it's rare to get a picture like that of a bald eagle.

I guess I'm not as mesmerized by trees as scarab...I grew up in a 6 million acre state park, and as you all already know, I spent my last few summers in the middle of a designated canoe wilderness. I drove down a 4 mile dirt road to get to work, which was an off-the-grid building with gas lights, and a generator and 2 solar panels to run the water pump and the radio (on which the only station you can get is NPR)

Actually...I am mesmerized by beautiful places...I have a deck on the living floor of my condo, and it faces a nice large field lined by trees which hug a river (sure there's a highway across the river, but really all it does is make a whooshing noise during the day)...and I'll sit on my deck for hours. I'd get a pic for you guys, but since it's a sliding glass door, it's currently got a giant sheet of plastic over it to keep the place warm and my bills low for the winter...maybe next week I'll take all the plastic down.

And I grew up in a valley surrounded by mountains, I could hike for 10 minutes and be in the wilderness from my back door.

I have some pretty neat pictures of a falcon that I actually took in front of the National Botanic Garden, right by the US Capitol Building. I'll see if I can dig them up.

I've spent the last week or so wandering aorund with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, feeling really confident as well.

This is all stemming from the fact I had a convo with a gal I'm friends with who I quite like, who has unfortunately just started going out with one of our mutual mates, where she said I was a really good friend, and also that I was good looking, sweet and adorable.

So yeah... I've gone from basically being crazy about this girl for the past 4 months or so, to not fancying her as such and thinking fo her as a little sister.

Is that normal?

Also: Cocks

P.S.

Not around here buddy.
Last summer on my first day out with that new canoe (well new for me) I seen 4 of them coming down the river at one point there were 2 in a large pine tree looking at the water & the biggest one was nearly 4 feet long from tip of tail feathers to the top of his/ her head...It was the biggest bald eagle I or my girlfriend had ever seen... & I have seen as many as 20 of them circling on thermals near the Bra D'or Lakes in Cape Breton. they just watched us float on by under them.
There are 3 nesting sites with in 1km of where I am now sitting. plus nesting sites for osprys as well. It is another great thing about not living in the city, yesterday I had a beaver in the yard, the girl friend grabbed a camera & I thought he was going for one of my apple trees.

He was sitting on the grass grooming itself when we first spotted him or her. it swam off when she came back out with the camera

The first time my dad brought me out hunting when I was 12, I remember a beaver came out of a pond we were hiking around and walked up to me and sniffed my boots.

There were only a few spots back home where bald eagles nested, and they were usually up on cliffs by ponds and lakes...so it was hard to get near them. There was an Osprey living on the river we sent clients down at the canoe outfitter, and I would often see him circling around above the site where we picked up the clients at the end of their day trip.

L O L ,I never said it was ... but that's my backyard !
F Y I
Nova Scotia is just a long narrow piece of land that's high right up through the middle length wise. We are surrounded by water about 99.99 %. There is a narrow strip of land 24 kliks wide thats mostly marshes and streams that connects us to New Brunswick/NorthAmerican Continent. All the water generally just gets absorbed &/or rolls right off of us. But with all the snow in the woods, then 2 days of heavy rain & temperatures over 10 degrees we got a little wet.

IT takes a lot of water to flood a place that's surrounded by ocean. The other thing, unless it keeps raining hard the flood will subside...it already is & its been raining off & on all day. There are several areas that are so close to sea level they flood quite often & on the Bay of Fundy the tides move up & down over 40ft twice a day... when they go out you can see a very noticable difference on how fast the river flows .

More, do you know if that's a male or female eagle? I can't tell right off the bat.

Last year, there was a pair of nesting eagles at the local park back home. Dad and I often went to take pictures. They had laid eggs, but unfortunately, a rival pair of eagles got the eggs. The good news is, this year they're back in the same nest, and they've been seen mating, so there's hope for eaglets yet.

Rydia, I do not know how to tell them apart. I do know that females tend to be larger than males. but that's not very usful when you only see 1 of them. The really large one we seen last year while canoeing was probably female, you can tell juveniles that are younger than 4/5 years old because they don't have the white head & tail ...they are splotchy colored mostly brown headed, the bills change color as well from dark brown to lightgold .

Malachy, Rydia... I was wondering if you might be interested in this site.
www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/

Go to the live camera's there are a couple of nests with nesting females, eggs are getting ready to hatch. ITs boring...but you can see & hear live birds. It will get better once the chicks hatch & both parents start hunting.
