Quick question:

Do any of you peeps know of any books or articles that assess the viability of Human Emancipation ( as in equality between all people Marx style)? A section of one of my essays for this term needs to debate this and at the moment I'm struggling to find anything that's particuarly relevant...

Its a bit of a longshot in all honesty, but I'm stumped at the moment and I don't see my tutor that's over seeing this essay till Thursday and I can't find his fecking email address to email him, so I'm stumped.

Damn, my boiler broke and looks like I have to sleep in the cold with no heating till Monday. It has been the coldest winter in a longtime. Some areas are colder than countries like Iceland due to the Arctic winds.

;;;;;
I used to be in the same boat your in. Hopefully you don't get too cold & have your pipes freeze.

Putting in a wood stove & a great chimney, was one of the best things I did when I moved out here from the city. Even though I now have a new boiler, When the power goes out, I have a woodstove for heat & to cook on (although I do have a bar B Q)
The amount of money we save burning wood as compared to oil is another great reason & if you do put in a wood stove remember to get one of those fans that sits on top of the stove & takes no battery's or electrical plug in to work, moves the heat around really well.
It creates its own electricity from different metals & heat.

Turn on your faucets... let them run (drip, really) so the pipes don't freeze. Also, you can probably find a relatively cheap space heater at a local Meijer or Home Depot/Lowes that can really do wonders keeping a small room warm. Good luck.

That's what we did over here when everything went out last month. I hope it's safe to drive to one of the stores where those very good ideas live. Good luck TP

Just like with the run up to the election, there is a lot of interest in the new president. Since his face is plastered all over the TV 24/7, it stands to reason that more people will come into the Politics forum wanting to talk about him.

I haven't heard anything about the poli moderators wanting any official obama thread yet..since it may as well be a short lived fad and we really don't need one thread to delegate every single Obama related thread for the next 4 or 8 years. Bush is the exception, not the norm, I would hope regarding how we deal with presidents in this forum.

I'm not happy right now. I'm extremely worried.

Long story short, we got a new district manager last month, and he started having our store manager enforce the company mandated attendance policy. Today, they fired somebody who had one too many unexcused absences... but he wasn't the worst case in the store as far as unexcused absences go, and because of that, EVERYONE'S on edge.

I'm not so much worried about my job security, because I rarely if ever call out. But I am worried about my co-worker's job security, because if this guy is gone, then several of my friends (and a few immediate co-workers) are about to be out the door as well, and I may quickly find myself alone in my own department if management isn't careful.

I don't like this situation at ALL.

Yeah,
my job tried to fire me for punching in a few seconds after a shift starts. Like... if I started at 8:00, but then I punch in at 8:01-- but only by a second or two,

it's hell to pay.
I done it several times, and I told them, "Look, I understand it's important to punch in time, but at the same time... it takes forever to get my card from the safe, even if I come in 10 minutes early."

And I was considered the most punctual of people.

I don't yet, three or four threads about different aspects of Obama (though I think that reperations thread is skating the lock line) isn't an epidemic. With the Bush situation that was something where people were clogging the front page, and most of the opinions were just "Bush sucks! Fuck him!". I don't see it getting that way with Obama. I think we'll get a flurry of activity at first, but unless he does things that are consistently miraculously fixing problems, or continously flushing the country down the shitter, it won't be that bad. George Bush was indeed a rare President. One retards everywhere I'm sure have been proud to call their own.

Proteas & Fli....I am truely sorry to hear you have these kinds of worries about work.
This can't be healthy for you guy's or anyone else, whose in this boat either. Reading these types of IMO-BULLSHIT reasons, 1 minute late for work or taking a day off without a Doc's excuse is Nucking Futs !

I come away from hearing (reading) about this kind of B.S. & have a completely better opinion of where I have gotten myself. People may slag on Unions. But unions are the only reason workers even non union workers have any rights at all.

In June of last year I quit a show being filmed here called 'Sea Wolf ' , the reasons were basicly people from other departments were telling us how we were going to 'rig' aspects of the show. We refused, the Production Manager backed them up (their ideas were cheaper cost wise),but unsafe & in some case, gravatationally impossible .
We both quit My buddy quit first ,I got a phone call, I was downstairs, they offered to keep me on...I quit as well.
They tried to bring in Key riggers from out of town.
They immediately found out NO OTHER RIGGER from Ontario east would help them out.
Every rigger they called backed up our decission to not put money ahead of safety, some couldn't believe what crazy ideas they were hearing, (we both got calls from as far away as B.C & 1 from L.A).
Things like flying actors at sea on counter weighted bungee cords. & unrated bungee's at that cause they're about a third the cost....logic being if they broke....they'd probably land in the ocean, not hitting the boats ! ! ! ! I could go on but your probably falling asleep if you even got this far.

But you guy's don't sound like there's any support for you & quitting will harm/could harm other job prospects.
If I were either of you I'd put on a good face & be knocking myself out to find another job.

see, that's just stupid...I don't punch in or anything, but if somebody is there before the time clock jumps to the next quarter hour, they're on time. If the time sheet still says 8:00 as far as paying you for the quarter hour...you're on time. Yes, you shouldn't be walking in right at the last minute before your shift...but they shouldn't expect people to be THAT punctual....and really, they won't have to pay you for that time..

at the ski mountain we are tracked by how many days in a season we highlight our name on the daily roster print out. if we have more than 30 days at the end of the season, we're in good standing and we get benefits next year. This new mountain is cool though, since they let the benefits begin as soon as you've worked a bit, so my wife gets her free pass whenever she wants to go skiing again, but at the old mountain you had to work for one year and get 30+ days to get benefits.

Where I work, management is pretty understanding if you clock in a few minutes late. They aren't going to nail your ears to the wall for being a minute late. Anything over like 6 minutes (???) and it starts to count against you.

The thing they're cracking down on is unexcused absences, and the way it's set up, you can have 25 unexcused absences over the course of like 6 months to a year before you'll be fired, and they give you every opportunity for counseling and the like before they'll do that. They're cracking down on it now because there are individuals in the store with 50+ unexcused absences... and they aren't part time people either.

I knew that the guy that got fired had some issues with attendance, but I wasn't aware that he had been put on final notice prior to the new policy for his attendance. So when they let him go yesterday, I was fucking stunned. I had no clue.

And the other thing was, I've recently switched departments. I was supposed to work with this guy, and now I'm replacing him for the short term, until they hire another person to work there. But for the next week or so my job is going to SUCK, BIG TIME, because now his being gone has shot the schedule all to hell.

Not on this computer. It's brand new and XP won't run on it. I still have a copy of XP from my old computer, believe me, it crossed my mind.

hahaha Lemme back up.

This computer has a quad core, 64 bit processor, etc etc and XP or any older versions of windows, will not run on it.

This new Windows 7 is supposed to run on computers, like mine, that were built for Vista.

It may suck also, but I really can't see it sucking MORE. and I hate Vista alot.

So, if I CAN put windows 7 on here, then the champagne.

But that doesn't make since, just because it was built for Vista doesn't mean only Vista can be put on it. I'm actually quite surprised you can't replace it with XP / other. This is a thinker.

I don't know why so many people have had problems with Vista, I use it all the time and it has never crashed and this thing has the speed of a bullet.

My main issue with Vista is their insistance at pissing around with file extensions, so Word documenhts are no longer .doc but .docx, thereby making it impossible to access them with any other version of Windows from time immaterial.

Yes, you can easily change the document to an RTF file, but the majority of people won't know how to do this or why they need to, thus making the whole endeavour a pain in the ass when you have to send and receive attachments on a regular basis.

Vista's on this computer & Xp's on my laptop....they're both HP products & I've never had a problem moving files back & forth...the only problem I've ever really noticed because it happens so much is the router that makes it easy to put both of them on the net, screws with my IP & I can't log on.
I really don't think that is a problem caused by the software of the computers, but more of a router/server problem.

It's snowing like a MF right now...the fires on, my lovers making BLT's for a snack & has put a pork roast with all the trimmings in the oven for later, she thinks late supper tonight
