When working with GIF files, think lo-tech. Don't try complicated pictures, that's what jpeg is for. Think high contrast, like old windows icons. This is why video game sprite signatures come out nicely in gif format. They're less likely to carry more than 256 colors.

NES vs PS2.

GIF vs MOV (or wmv or avi or mpeg).

Use the smallest number of colors possible, especially if it's animated.

Take advantage of dithering, but use sparingly. When I have to crunch gifs out to a certain file size: similar colors, dithering, and transparency are usually first to go.

Haha, I go to sleep for a night, and when I check back an entire flame assault has been launched against me. Okay, perhaps "increative" isn't a word, but hey, English isn't my native language! I'd like to see you speak Dutch! Perhaps my sig isn't the best one around, but at least I made it myself and it's relatively original and I don't call myself the official sig maker.

Now, maybe I was a bit harsh on poor old Rugby, so let's say something nice to make it up: Your new sig is a lot better. But still, the little devil looks a bit.... distorted. I mean the clothes, face and glasses just don't match. You should do those all in one style I think. Furthermore, it would look better if the chicks in the back all had equally strong lighting.
