I've been worried about Proteas's mental state for quite some time, but not in the "I think you're going to do something stupid way" but in the 'You could be a lot happier than you are if you extended out of your rut" kind of way.
I honestly believe Proteas takes WAY more bullshit off of people than he should, because he considers his high tolerance for bullshit a virtue. It IS a virtue, but it's also twistedly masochistic. Proteas would be much better suited to being a mid level manager at a corporation in the financial sector, not selling powertools to slack jawed yokels for some senile old power hungry prick.
People see Proteas's potential, and think "What's wrong with this guy that he doesn't do better for himself? He must be some sort of psycho or something." What you NEED to do, is ADMIT you're a masochist, get a chick satisfies that need as part of role playing (but doesn't actually treat you like shit... it has to be RP to be healthy), and use that new found self worth to sell on the open market.
For example, I could TOTALLY see Proteas as a vender of custom made knives at a gun/knife shows. He'd get to do what he loves all day every day for people who share the same interests, get to see the country, and most importantly SHARPEN AND ASSEMBLE LOTS OF KICK ASS KNIVES.
Even if he doesn't do it as full-time employment, I think he'd be a lot happier. He could see a lot more of the world going to gun and knife shows, and I think that would open his perspective to his own worth.

Not everyday at my workplace is like that, man, most days go off without a hitch. My supervisor (who is really just a glorified csa and has no real authority) is trying to get on as a department manager in a different part of the store, so I won't have to put up with him for much longer AND there's a chance I'll be able to move up.
But you are right, there are days where I think I'd be happier doing something else. Hell, skunky's making twice what I am now doing half the work, and I'm a bit envious of her for it in SPITE of the asshole that called her.
"What's wrong with this guy that he doesn't do better for himself? He must be some sort of psycho or something."
.... is that really what everyone thinks of me?

What I love to do is tinker around and make things, and the knife sharpening/construction thing is kind of an extension of that. Originally I wanted to go to school and become a Lutheir, but my folks wouldn't go for that (why I don't know, I mean Gibson has a showcase and a factory in Nashville, not to mention a dozen or so music stores between here and there including Sam Ash all have some sort of repair tech on staff). Before I quit at the music store last year I had built (from kits) about 4 electric guitars, an electric bass, a mandolin, and two dulcimers, and had gotten to the point where I was very proficient in setting up instruments.

For most of my life I have been brought up to believe in the financial power of 'Supply' & 'Demand' .
Now lately that has just completely been swept away.
Its always been so simple...little or no supply, means that the price goes up. Conversely that means if there is an overabundence of something...the price drops.
Now it no longer seems to be so.
I am talking about commodities & the 'spot price' verses actual price paid for goods .
One example is oil...there is no shortage, but the price is totally out of touch with that reality/
Another perfect example is Silver Bullion. It took a jump today after falling in & around $10-$11 dollars the last couple of weeks after a early summer high of around $18.00+.
So with such a loss in price one would think theres lots of it around.
That the suppliers have been inundating the market with it.
Not so, as a matter of fact U.S. 1 oz Silver Eagles haven't been available for this 2008 minting year for over 2 months, & At Kitco a very large bullion dealer has been out of Silver in any size but Thousand ounce bars for over a week.
WTF.... the price is in down & you can't buy any ? Because there isn't any available.
My local suppliers are completely out ,& can't get any more at this time !
Even the Royal Canadian Mint isn't answering e-mails & calls about bullion Silver availability at this time.
But still the price is only $11. 89 at Spot.
Plus NWT Mint an American Bullion Dealer I've bought from in the past, is up to 12 + weeks of back order on its Silver orders.
So why is the price of this so low while its unavailable...& the price of oil is so high & their is a market glut ?

They wanted me to go for a Computer Information Systems degree and become a computer tech, something I am somewhat skilled at. However, I got halfway through the program and decided if I had to sit in front of a computer screen all day troubleshooting computer problems for people as an Admin I'd probably have climbed a clocktower and taken out everyone in sight.
They reluctantly agreed to allow me to change majors tp music, but with a minor in business to cover my ass, which was fine by me. I wound up dropping out a few classes shy of getting my degree because I couldn't handle college level algebra even WITH a tutor.
They don't like the fact that I get treated like crap at work (which happens rarely), and I know it's not what they wanted for me, but it's better than what I was doing a year ago working part time at the music store. You want to talk about a crappy job? Pfft... my team leader giving me crap every once in a while about working outside my department is nothing. I stayed there for a year and a half where other people quit anywhere from 3 days to a week (a month at the most) after being hired on.
Fuck, by now I would have said "fuck em" and did what I wanted..because clearly you're getting neither.
I graduated High School at 16, they were paying for me to go to college out of their own pocket. I'm 23 years old now, I have no student loans to pay off and I'm employed full time with full health and dental. Am I doing what I want? Not really, but I'm doing better than most folks my age.
How much time can you really waste? As you said, Skunky is making twice as much as you, and her job isn't exactly difficult (physically), so what's keeping you?
My job history is spotty, and I'm bidding my time until I can establish a good solid work record before I go looking for something else. I'm not sitting here idly while my life passes me by, I do have a plan.

Finally got around to dow... watching *ahem*... the first episode... and I didn't really expect that. I mean, that's one of the reasons I like that show... is they're not afraid to rock the boat... do something you don't see coming... like the end of last season or the one before... y'know where nearly the entire cast got fired...
That and House kind of reminds me of my dad... without empathy and turned up to Eleven... but still.

Yeah, I'm going to hell.
I got a kid plastered last night, his first time.
Due to my suggestions, I got him to do tequila shots, Captain Morgan Tatto, and some Jim Bean
He was gone, helped him back into his room though.

Heh... they sucker you in with an easy first semester (cuz all they're really doing is making sure you're on the leve to do the actual work, so they have to re-do high school)... then in semesters 2 and 3 they kick your ass... so be careful... don't lose good study habits (like I did).

Your paradox is none at all, it proves laws of supply and demand. What happens is that the market mechanisms are not working; ie the people behind supply and demand are not correctly setting price and quantities.

LISTEN TO DA MAN.
But my first semester was to kick slackers out of the university, the second is for kicking those who do not manage the subtle art of abstraction. And to kick out those who think they are kewl because they had outstanding marks in the first semester.
Third semester is real college.
