What sort of stuff you teaching them? If you can try and bring it shit to make so that it actually seems useful somehow. I know my oroblem with Maths was that I saw no use to it. If you're trying to teach them long division and you put in such a way so that the problem is to do with something they're interested in, say a sport of some kind, and you'll get a better result in my experience.

Making it practical and actually seem useful is the hard part in teaching Math. You can do that and you're set.

I'm teaching them probability, pre-algebra. Pretty easy stuff.

Yeah, it's hard. I tried making it fun earlier with probability with gambling, and it sort of worked. They mostly have trouble with the pre-algebra stuff.

If what my friend said was correct -- and everything else about this sword seems to be -- this particular piece was a leftover from the Second Sino-Japanese war, so it's more pre-ww2 than it is ww2.

He had one at one point in time that was from an old VFW Hall, that had a plaque and everything to go with it, commemorating the sword as being a bringback from the Baataan Death March. It was in worse condition than mine (battle scars galore), but he was able to get about $900 from a guy in Australia for it.

Pray I never end up in your neck of the woods and manage to find where you lvie. You will suddenly find that you will be minus one sword :P

That's okay, you might wind up getting my machete too. >:-D~

What I heard is that they were taken by the U.S. I got this from the history channel so I'm not sure.

The really interesting thing is that there are still a few masters in Japan who you can commition to make a real sword in the authetic way. They take months and cost like $100,000 but it's a fucking authentic sword.

My brother has a friend of a friend out in Arkansas who makes knives and swords in the old Samurai Master style. Supposedly the guy folds the knife steel 10,000 times a piece, and charges ungodly amounts of cash for them like that. But what I found interesting is the way he tests the steel itself after sharpening it. He first wants to see if it will (1) cut through a pine 2x4, and then (2) if it will cut cleanly through a hair off his own head.

But what really cracked me up is that the guy stopped sending his stuff overseas after a client of his used one of his knives to take out a Jewish Banker in Hong Kong. Apparently international authorities frown on that sort of thing.

I considered commissioning a swordsmith in Scottland to forge the Master Sword from the Zelda video games in the old european sword forging style. it was going to cost me $2,200 for it.

I still want it :/

What sword should I go for if I want to both learn how to use a sword and get a good work out.

Obviously I would start with like a wooden replica or something so I wouldn't hurt myself. But how about after that. And maybe, what would be the best wooden practice thingy to start with.

Decided I should post back in here.

Simple point, two jobs suck, so badly.

Two jobs on the same day likewise.

Four days a week I have to pull a 7 to 3 shift at the grocery store.
Then a 4 to midnight shift at the local British Knockoff Tavern/pub/drunk people give good tips.

Not cool at all.

Oh yes, also finally reading Bertrand Russell's A History of Western Philosophy and have transgressed to St. Augustines City of God, Nietchze's Beyond Good and Evil and Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Beowulf.

Since I work most of the time, my few bits of free time is usually spent reading.

Bamboo is a good cheap material for practicing swordplay... but why? Take up a martial art or boxing or even wrestling. It's harder to get started in any sport by yourself as opposed to being led in by school/parents... but a good work ethic substitutes nicely for the lack of competition older athletes encounter.

My competition days are behind me, but I've got a nice collection of relics to remind me how fucking hard it was mentally and physically.

I'm gunna find them now, and take a picture.

Whatever sword your nearest Iaido or kenjutsu school recommends.

I play with rattan sticks, but they're designed to be substituted for Chinese butterfly swords, sais, kama, etc etc.

Obviously I would start with like a wooden replica or something so I wouldn't hurt myself. But how about after that. And maybe, what would be the best wooden practice thingy to start with.

Bokken or shinai I'm guessing. Rattan sticks are fun, but they're too short (and light) to prep adequately for longer sword training.

You, sword gurus, etc.

Anyone actually been trained to use a sword here? I've never done any sword kata, but the aris I learned is supposed to be unspecific as to actual weapon in hand. Sifu kicked my ass with my own books once.......come to think of it, I had his sais that day too.....damn, I suck(ed)....

what's the name of the canoe?

Camper, Penobscott, Discovery?

What layup did you get? A roylex? (plastic)

We have about 12 Camper 15 footers in our rental fleet, they are a nice canoe for the river, but I don't like how little they can actually carry (comfortably, they have a pretty big max capacity). And the floor of it ripples in the water and actually concaves when I'm in it with another full size adult male.

The penobscott is an awesome canoe. it can take a beating, or go on long hauls and has a capacity of like 989 pounds. It's a little pricier, usually coming in at around $1100 brand new, but you can grab one from an outfitter or rental at the end of the summer for $500-800, the main reason for the price is that they get some scratches, but they still float. You can buy a skid pad kit for like $100 and it'll make your canoe last practically forever!

The discovery is truly a horrible abomination from satan's loins himself! it's an 80 pound canoe of pure vile evil. It is a tank to maneuver and even worse if you are unfortunate enough to carry it on your own.

Canoes can get pretty expensive pretty quick.

There's an awesome company based out of Ontario called Swift. The guy makes these really sweet Kevlar fusion canoes. He has one tandem canoe which weighs 36 pounds because he replaced the aluminum gunwales with a foam/kevlar mix (it's his Matawa, good for smaller couples like my size or so, not so good if you're six foot tall and 230 pounds). That boat can run you a cool $4,000 with some extra bells and whistles included.

Another known company is Bell Canoes, which makes some nice Kevlar boats. They typically cost around $2000-3000 brand new.

And of course the solo canoes now adays are fucking amazing. We have a few of these solo canoes which weigh only 16 pounds! They are from a company called Hemlock Canoe and follow the same design principals as those more widely known Hornbeck canoes (which weigh around the same amount), but at much lower price

hemlock Nessmuck can go for $1100-1200
Hornbecks lately are going for over $2000

and we have a $3000 solo canoe in our fleet which is locally made, weighs 20 pounds, has those fancy foam gunwales and is ultra fast. very narrow, but you sit on the bottom and paddle with a kayak paddle. Very fun to play around in.

oops, did I just talk canoes?

Im primarily a knife collector even though I haven't added any peices for a while. If Pro is interested I could send him that bowie I keep talking about wanting to put an edge on. I'd pay for the work of course.
Anyway my name comes from the staff I bought in my journey to have real versions of the weapons of all the ninja turtles. But the only swords I have are the cheap display kind. I do have a few interesting weapons. I've talked about the flail (functional) I keep by my bed. I have one claw looking fantacy knife thing. My crossbow string broke and I'm having trouble finding the right replacment so i can't claim to have a functional one of those. I had one of those exending baton things that I bought in D.C just incase Shrike tried to molest me. Weapons are just cool.

Pay isn't what I'm worried about. I just don't like the idea of giving out my mailing address and then three months later not getting anything from said person. Because then the info is out there and... well, you get the idea.

Sometimes it pays to be paranoid.
