Well you know the whole "Ad hominem/Ad [insert Latin]" thing that goes on here?

Combine that with the usual "my major's better than yours" bull you'll occasionally run into on campuses.

Suffice to say there's at least one pre-med guy here who's no longer looking at Classics as some "worthless history type major".....

I get it the worst from the engineers and b-school people, but they (the engineers especially) usually have their heads so far up their ass it isn't even worth arguing over. I just laugh when it takes em 3 nights to read a book and write a 2 pg paper.

Suffice to say when you live in a culture that owes quite a bit to not only the ancient cultures but their languages having some knowledge in those fields makes people who mock your major think twice.

The advantage to Classics is it's still carries a bit of its old "educated elite" status, and it tends to be an exceptional forerunner for advanced degrees and some other stuff.

Bottom line, some way some how all the people scoffing now will end up working for me anyways.... ;)

You know, sometimes I think it's the pure fact that you immerse yourself into the study of certain things that you start using terms in normal speech.

My fiancee has had extensive (if not excessive) anatomy and physiology training. She can tell you what muscle, exactly, you are pointing to, and she uses names often instead of generalized terms, mostly because it's been pounded into her brain for so long, and also because it's a much more specific approach. "yeah..erm...my upper arm area" doesnt exactly explain that you're talking about your bicep.

I've found that sometimes, people aren't just trying to show off, but just are socially retarded by their schooling. They forget how to converse with normal people.

While completely true, and probably the case a majority of the time, there are still a lot of pompous asses. I was actually asked a few times "why don't I switch majors to something that's useful", or thereabouts......

most people I know are pretty modest, and most don't even know what they're doin with their lives anyways, so it's rarely an issue. When it is an issue though I'm usually not too nice, especially if they make rather blatantly arrogant comments.

In terms of social retardation, I think the engineers here are the worst. Part of that may be due to the fact that the school's on an entirely separate campus.....

Anyways, where would a Classics major be employed?

They are pretty much like that anywhere, the separate campus is probably a result of their social retardation as opposed to a cause of it.

It's fantastic for anything covering writing and rhetoric actually.

If I get a Ph.D and position in what I want the only thing I'm going to be doing is laughing at the poor fools who don't get paid to do the things they love.

Besides, what's "competitive" today will be "obsolete" and a waste of space on college budgets tomorrow. Academic subjects tend to go in fads. Great example is Arabic Studies (for obvious reasons, it's now got a much bigger budget than it had in the last 20 years). Classics however usually has a special privileged position and in some universities can't be cut. The Classics dept was one of 3 original Umich departments, meaning it will never be cut. Job security in academia is a helluvha thing.

Plus, I get cross-over with History, English, Comp Lit, Philosophy, Linguistics, etc departments.

Complaining? Not at all.
In fact, it'll be the opposite. People who spent years training to be a prof in some more competitive field to make the bigger bucks will complain because their programs were cut with the times and now they can't get any teaching positions.

Plus, if I ever get in trouble I'll just write the next best-seller (Like JK Rowlings).

At 5/4/08 08:36 PM, Imperator wrote: business majors talking about how much better they are because of XYZ Greek invention, etc.

Business majors will do anything to make their subject sound more flashy and scientific. An example is the BCG matrix which any non-business major would simply call a figure instead of a 'matrix'.

Sometimes they even invent their own new Greek letters for nothing but the lulz, like the vega.

At 5/5/08 12:32 AM, Imperator wrote: Great example is Arabic Studies (for obvious reasons, it's now got a much bigger budget than it had in the last 20 years).

Yeah, attendancy in classes related to Arabic subjects has certainly skyrocketed in the last years due to the risen political relevancy of the Arab-speaking world combined with an actual military presence (US mostly) or large amounts of Arab-speaking immigrants (some European nations). Most of the people who attend the classes have another major and only follow a part of the curriculum though, have two majors at the same time or have (almost) completed another one. I think there are about 5 or six students who only do Arabic with nothing else to fall back on at the university where I take these classes, which isn't even that radically from the amount of students who only study Hebrew. On the other hand, I'm in the process of completing my econometrics major and I know people who did or completed a college-level education in law, engineering, biomedical science, 'European studies' or even pedagogy.

Increased political, cultural or economic relevance of a certain region can attract a lot of people who primarily focus on another major to classes about that region's language and culture, which is why the number of people who study Chinese will probably boom in the next few decades, but Latin is a dead language whose cultural relevance will probably remain unchanged in the foreseeable future. A pan-European or pan-Catholic movement that uses Latin for an enhanced group feeling might make Latin more interesting than it has been in the past five decennia but I don't think that those scenarios are very likely.

If I had to guess I'd say that the sizes of the classics departments of universities will remain relatively constant in the next 50 years or so. But that's of course not much of an obstacle if you're primarily interested in doing what you like.

I never really understood that. Specific liberal arts degrees are largely there for interest and enjoyment, while the degrees in general give people a fair amount of transferable skills that they can use when they enter the work force.

The only vocational degrees left really are medicine and engineering, and if you don't enjoy either of those, why would you switch to them?

In terms of social retardation, I think the engineers here are the worst. Part of that may be due to the fact that the school's on an entirely separate campus.....

No, I think it's just that a lot of people who go into engineering are just assholes to begin with, and the fact that they're suddenly in an environment where they're taking all the same classes with a bunch of other assholes doesn't exactly promote social development.

On top of that, people at my university can't manage their lives at all. They binge party and binge study, without ever understanding how living a life of extremes like that negatively impacts their grades, stress levels, and overall health. Oh well.

Another thing with engineering students is that a lot of them don't actually want to be engineers. They just got into the program because they thought it's what they're supposed to do, or they think they're obligated because they got decent marks in math and science in high school. They think that engineering is really hard because they don't want to do any of the stuff.

Personally, I find that any academic pursuit is fairly easy as long as you're somewhat interested in what you're doing. Engineering might have a heavier workload, but I'm sure I'd have a harder time acquiring say, a history degree, because it doesn't interest me as much. The smugness of certain disciplines (especially engineering and especially business majors) is largely unwarranted.

Making more money doesn't make you a smarter or better person. I'd rather do something I like for 30k a year than something I hate for 50k.

I don't mind having shitty weekdays for awesome weekends. Besides, you have to look past your own personal enjoyment and consider what's best for the people you provide for. I may may not love accounting but I derive satisfaction from the fact that I'm pretty damn good at it and I'm never going to have to sign my children up for the Federally provided free lunch program courtesy of the taxpayers who dislike their jobs. Also there is just something that's pretty fucked up about telling your child you can't afford a pair of shoes.

Luckily, I happen to like chemical engineering, so everything worked out for the best.

Your weekends are going to be more fun than mine.

Huh. The only b-major I know well worked his butt off to get in, then switched to a philosophy major. Just plain didn't like the dynamics or anything about the B-school, including his colleagues.

Oh you never know. With Hollywood kicking out Toga movies every few years there always seems to be some interest and curiousness surrounding the study. Maybe if we decide to return to our "roots" and make all the university applications have Greek and Latin tests again I'll be popular!

If I had to guess I'd say that the sizes of the classics departments of universities will remain relatively constant in the next 50 years or so. But that's of course not much of an obstacle if you're primarily interested in doing what you like.

They're gonna remain constant, some close, but it's rare to open new ones, at least in this country. What's also sort of good about the somewhat unchanging nature of Classics depts is that there's a bit of job security there. But you're right, since I enjoy it, the dynamics of employment are moot for me anyways.

Agree wholeheartedly. And people change careers nowadays much more frequently. It's a lot rarer to have someone graduate from college, go into their field and stay there till retirement. So why not just study something you enjoy than take the gamble that those "fast, big money" majors will still be making the big bucks when you graduate?

Some people still think it's all about bein a doctor or lawyer or whatever and makin 200k though......

My theory is the money will come, there's always ways to make money, but making some money doing what you enjoy is just Epic Win.

When I perform I get that same satisfaction. We don't make big money dancing for crowds or whatnot, but we were gonna be dancing anyways, the fact that we're making money off it is just pure bonus.

No, I think it's just that a lot of people who go into engineering are just assholes to begin with, and the fact that they're suddenly in an environment where they're taking all the same classes with a bunch of other assholes doesn't exactly promote social development.

Could be.

On top of that, people at my university can't manage their lives at all. They binge party and binge study, without ever understanding how living a life of extremes like that negatively impacts their grades, stress levels, and overall health. Oh well.

I knew a kid who couldn't manage crap for life. Locked himself out constantly, leaves the stove on, even left the SHOWER on once.

Linguistic genius, got into every grad program he applied to, including all the Ivy league schools. If I make it as a prof chances are I'll be using his books to teach class, all the while smirking at the fact that the kid couldn't wipe his own ass without fucking it up. Takes all kinds I guess. Einstein wasn't exactly "normal" either though, so I guess that doesn't say anything.

I agree wholeheartedly. My grades quite literally reflect my interests, and because I've had quite a wide range of courses and subjects you can really see what I'm interested in. The weird thing is my old roommate (electrical engineering) always compared the difficulty of his courses to the ease of mine, like he'd say "1 eecs course is like 3 of yours, so like, my 12 credits is actually 20 of yours, because you don't do anything".

The thing is it's really not, it's just specific. My courses have fairly heavy workloads, what with reading, papers, and exams. But because I've been doing it for a while I've developed my skills. He took 2 days to write a 2 pg paper. Papers in my classes are 10+ usually, and 100+ pgs of reading. He'd take a week to do what's required in a day.

Likewise if I took an eecs class I'd probably not do so well because I haven't developed any skills for that stuff.

So I think workload is overall somewhat relative depending on your skills.

I'm sorry man but it had to be done.

I have nothing against people who can use pot and lead a productive life. It's these sanctimonius hippies that make me wish I was a riot cop in the 60's

I went round to my mates to try and do a bit of group revision...it degenerated into playing Piggy in the middle with a deflated rugby ball and discussing the merits of various women who appear in soap operas ( ie, which one was the fittest).

Productive, no?

A kid in my group dropped out of school today.

now we're down to 3 members, when every other group has 5.

my fiancee went to the ER today because her back has been bothering her. she strained a back muscle and was given ibuprofen and vicodin.

That happened in on of my Grad. School groups, my group dropped to two so the other member and I were able to join with another group. They had already done all the work but we compiled the project and took it to Kinkos.

Try laying down or standing in front of her so her neck isn't at such odd angles for the repetitive motions.
