Note to self: Sobering reminders of mortality suck.

Earlier this year, I had a good friend die in a drunk driving accident. Just today I learned a friend of mine has Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. You never really think of 27-year-olds as cancer patients... usually kids or the over-40 crowd.

Does, however, make me want to start keeping in better touch with people. Hadn't talked to my friend that died in several years, only recently caught up with the one with cancer.

Hooray for having a cancer-free family history, though. Just gotta deal with the rampant alcoholism. :P

My grandfather died of Prostate cancer back in 1999. I hope to god that I don't have that problem.

Make sure you get your butt probed regularly.

My grandfather had prostate cancer back in the 80s, and they removed his prostate, but the blood transfusion they had to give him during the surgery was tainted and he contracted Hepatitis C.

Then again, knowing him, it might just be karma.

apparently some people caught AIDS and Hepatitis C from organ transplants a few weeks ago.

I heard about that, it's really unfortunate. Thankfully it doesn't happen that much anymore.

Hep C isn't a death sentence, Grandpa is 83 years old and has had it longer than I have been alive. Still pretty shitty, though.

I left my phone in the computer room over night.

I just noticed, I missed one call this morning.

it was some number I didn't know.

So, I goggled it.

Why is some leather store two towns over calling my phone?!

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHFUCKSAAAAAAK E!!!!!!!!!!!

Typical, I was working on something when The Boss had another of his brainwaves: to have an automated message flash up every five minutes about cleaning the place...which promptly crashed the PC, and still flashes up no matter how often I OK it.

Typical, though - more interested in hoovering that anything important, such as numerous Health & Safety violations (holes in the floor, broken office chairs, most of the lights not working, NO HEATING) as well as other violations of worker's rights (no designated breaks, wages that are illegal to pay for the hours worked), but we must be told to tidy up a bit.

lol, great boss you've got there!

what did he do, want to put it as "urgent" or "repeat" but didn't specify something and all of a sudden he's crashed everyone's computer?

at least when you restart your computer you'll have some time to tidy your work space up a bit. he was probably worried that an inspector was on the way or some shit.

lol, great boss you've got there!

By "here" I mean "Spain."

WHne I was typing this out, I had one flashing up asking if I had a comp[laint about shop policy. Should I just give him a link?

The irony is he's got an intense paranoia about Spyware, but snooping on workers is OK...

what did he do, want to put it as "urgent" or "repeat" but didn't specify something and all of a sudden he's crashed everyone's computer?

It was one of those PC to PC messages, and because the PC isn't set up to send and receive them, it needed to be restarted. As he's the Administrator (in fact, the only person with Admin privileges, which has caused problems before), he can remotely shut the PC down to initiate it. The PC was suffering major league slowdown before this, and PCs generally don't restart themselves without a prompt.

at least when you restart your computer you'll have some time to tidy your work space up a bit. he was probably worried that an inspector was on the way or some shit.

He has a fetish for tidiness on the rare occasions he gives a shit - the irony is it's the manager who lets the place become a tip, and I have to clean up after him. In other words, that makes me the Tidying Up Fairy to both the manager, and He Who Must Be Obeyed.

I felt the same way until I actually finished the series.

I'm reading a picture book too. ^_^

literally, The Last Hero is basically a picture book, with art from Paul Kidby in a typical Discworld novel. the art is amazing.

Ok, using the lounge to rant because otherwise I'd have to post in a spam topic

The writers strike is not about piracy, you napster happy simpleton. It's about the networks displaying the work on a new medium, making new money off of it and denieing residuals on this to the creators of the product. Writers are not paid like actors so yes, this matters. This isn't fith house or no fifth house, it's house or no house. I know you think the prietties on the picture box do it all themselves but that's just because you're shallow. people write for them, people light for them, people even make them prettier with clothes and make up. Is that fitting tribute being paid to a ruling class? No, it's people putting in their fucking section of the overall product.

Also, Mal, how'd you get a picture of my future?

Why don't you create a non spam topic about it then?

Non spam topics have already been done about it and bringing one of them back would also violate a rule. Plus all I'd get in general are bad people who think greedy writers are keeping their celebrities hostage.

It seems sort of funny, but the truth is there is a movement in the US away from collective bargaining, and in most states, unless you have a rock solid contract through a union, an employer can get rid of you on a whim, for whatever reason at any time as long as it's not because of your race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.

Technically I'm a member of the Civil Service Employees Association, a union of state employees, because I work at the ski mountain, which is run by a state agency. We have been without a contract since last spring, and the bargaining hit an impasse this summer.

The thing that is at the heart of the debate is the pay we get at the olympic venues. Whereas any state employee who's been working seasonally for a few years is offered insurance, and pay around $10 an hour, employees like myself are being paid $8.25 an hour and only receiving workers comp. for on-the-job injuries regardless of years worked, education, or merit.

Without that union, the different agencies of the state would keep all pay low with minimal benefits and what benefits they do give, will have some very tough-to-achieve standards to reach them, basically we've been getting walked all over by the agency and the union is trying to make it better. but the union is not as strong as it once was, since some agencies in the state are no longer making contracts with them, or there isn't enough interest of employees.

I would think that the screen writers strike is going to be one of the last major union lockdowns you'll see in American industry. Unions are weaker than they have ever been and fewer people are joining the ones that are still around.

Also, Mal, how'd you get a picture of my future?

the irony is that the hero in that picture is name Cohen the Barbarian...and you just mentioned reading about Conan.

We had a great radio station like that here. It was run by two guys who made fun of just about anything and everything.
They actually got a warning about their content, and they made fun of it on the air. But the content was a little more careful after then. These guys were hilarious. I could listen to them for hours. It was really fun. Eventually they got shut down.

I was reading Joe Rogan's blog (really interesting and intelligent guy btw. Not to mention down to earth and honest) and in one of the sticky threads they had compiled an entire list of awesome comics that are downloadable. I don't know if I can post it here or not given that they're downloadable comics, i.e perhaps 'illegal' but yeah. They were awesome even though I hardly read them. But yeah, I might go and buy Dark Knight. More comics need to be like this.

Pratchett (the author) bases his entire Discworld Series (which the book is part of) on satire. you meet Cohen the Barbarian in the first novel of the series, and he's basically a very very old Conan. he got that way from being very good at what he does, so don't think "poor old man".

They finally wound up firing him after he pulled a rather cruel April Fool's day prank... he told everyone that Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam was found dead in his hotel room in London from an apparent suicide. He then went into the Top 9 songs of the day at 9 PM as an entire list of Pearl Jam songs in memoriam, starting off with "Alive," then aired calls from people who were CRYING THEIR EYES OUT over his supposed death.

The next night, he was gone.

I never really understood the whole "bitch drinks" thing. I like to occasionally get and maintain a buzz, that's all, I don't see the fun in doing this if I have to down something that tastes worse than cough syrup.

It's like when my sister talked about mixing up a cooler full of "Hooch Punch" using Pure Grain Alcohol... she talked about pouring in Hawaiian Punch by the gallon, cutting up fresh fruits to throw in, entire bags of ice... all that trouble just so they could all get thoroughly drunk beyond belief and not feel as though they were drinking gasoline. I just don't understand that logic.
