Still waiting on the Lowe's people to call me back. I'm half tempted to just say "fuckit" and go looking for something else.

Proteas, if you're going to get a job in retail, you should try any of the warehouse clubs (if any) in your area. Sam's and Costco are some of the highest, if not the highest, paying retail businesses. I looked at a chart of median wages for Lowe's employees, and I must say, for similar types of work, Sam's Club blows Lowe's out of the water.

http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Empl oyer=Lowes_Home_Improvement/Hourly_Rate

After just 4 years with the company, and in a position where I do people's shopping for them, my hourly pay is more than any of the median wages on that list. And I'm nowhere near supervisor or manager status.

And from what I understand, Costco pays even more than Sam's Club.

Don't get me wrong-the pay at Lowe's is still pretty good for retail-but I would definitely check out a warehouse club or two if there's any nearby, just to hedge your bets.

I know it didn't take weeks for Sam's to get my drug test results in-a couple of days at most.

If you can-get an overnight shift. You get paid more, and you don't have to deal with customers.

Well, now that you mention it, there is a Sam's Club just up the interstate a piece. It wouldn't hurt to to check, what with Lowe's (and every other employer in this town) jerking me around like this.

I know it didn't take weeks for Sam's to get my drug test results in-a couple of days at most.

This is the longest I've ever had to wait for a drug test to come back, I will say that. Not even Kroeger's took this long when I was interviewing for them (I don't think), and I still wound up getting hired somewhere else at that time.

Hm... it would be interesting to meet the kind of folks who would shop at a Sam's Club at 2 in the morning.

When I went out looking for a job back during 2003, I put in at least 90 applications before I lost count. Of those 90, only Sam's Club called me back. And at this time of year, when students picking up summer jobs head back to school, and as the sales start picking up coming out of the summer, it's probably one of the better times to look.

It's amazing how empty the store is that late. Also, you get people coming in to buy random crap. I once stopped at a Sam's at 1 AM since my touchpad mouse up and died and I needed to finish a report. I bought a regular mouse.

There are a lot of words like that. It's because the British and American standards are different. Like they spell words -ise and we spell them -ize.

Yes, I know. That's why firefox keeps complaining when I write favourite, not favorite, traveled, travelled .
Brazilians and Portuguese have the same differences, but not Argentinians and Spanish.
But we do have a different informal singular you, which is conjugated different.

Recuerdo is with c. The u goes mute after the q in Spanish.
Anyway, no, what I was saying is that Argentinians don't use "tú", and use "vos" instead. Its use is the same.
Usted, as you correctly pointed out, is a formal you, like "Sie" in German.

The usted form is the more formal... Chicanos like me ususually don't distinguish the tu and usted forms... and since our elders are so forgiving, they don't correct us when we say, "Cómo estás (tu.)" VERSUS, "cómo está usted."

I learned to distinguish them... It was a literal headache for me.
Everytime my parents heard me telling the informal form... they hit me in the back of the head.

Using usted (as being respectful ;)) is a bit old-fashioned. I only use usted for teachers and older people I do not know in general. My Grandfather used usted to address his father, but my dad didn't.
My mother used usted for her uncles, though.

Every time my parents heard me saying the informal form to my elders... that's when they would smack me up against my head.

Because it sounds too weird to say the "Ud." form to my peers...

Bleh, Tú vs. Usted.

Us Chileans don't have much of a problem with those, but the thing is that we also use "vos" as an extremely informal form. Because of our pronunciation, it's more like "voh" instead of "vos".
Your parents can plant you a dropkick right in the face if you adress them using "voh", unless you're a part of a very modern family.

Anyway-- it's hard for non-chileans to adapt. Where Spanish-speakers in general would say "Tú tienes eso" and Argentinians would say "Vos tenés eso", we say "Voh tení esa hueá, hueón".

hahahaha!
We do skip pronouncing the s at the end of words, but that means you're from the lower classes. In the Navy, my father told me he heard the following conversation:
- Vóh de donde só?
- Yo de Loma, y vóh?
- De Lanú

5 letters s rest in peace.
Anyway, I think Uruguayans mix tú and vos; I think people from Montevideo use vos most of the time, though.
Back to ourselves, which is my favourite (yes, with "ou", Firefox) topic anyway, I found this to be very enlightening on the subject.

Nope. Vosotros is second person plural, as in "you guys". I think only people in Spain use Vosotros nowadays though, everyone else simply says "ustedes". (Even though "Ustedes" is the plural form of "usted", it's not necesarily used in a formal, respectful way, since in most countries it's the only form that it's widely used)
It's easier for people that are learning Spanish too, since when using "ustedes" they simply use the same conjugation they would use for "ellos/as", while "vosotros" requires you to pretty much learn 25,000 new verb endings that you're probably never going to use anyway.

which is exactly what our spanish teacher did. "here's vosotros, you won't use it. EVER. but here it is." it wasn't even on the Regents exam.

I wish I remembered my Spanish lessons, because I enjoy the language, but I hated the class....See? that's why required second languages in highschool are utterly worthless. We won't learn shit if we don't want to!

Heather and I got in an argument about seatbelt and helmet laws today. I just don't see why this scenario, which everyone who has talked to me about this has brought up of some douchebag parent having some moron kid who grows up and one day decides that it is now cool to not wear a seatbelt or a helmet and gets killed. How the fuck is me, a childless man, considered in people's eyes a goddamn role model for a fucking child?! why does the government have to replace good parenting, "see that man johnny? he's a moron and will brain himself not wearing that helmet on his motorycle"...no there HAS to be a helmet law for it, because little johnny is a moron.

what got me was that heather said that so this little johnny gets it in his head its cool, because he has seen some idiot adults who wish not to wear helmets after informed decisions, not to wear a helmet and takes out dad's motorycle at 15 and dies....well, first of all, why is a 15 year old riding his dad's bike? you can't until your 16 in the state!

I understand the laws saying kids need to be belted in cars, they aren't old enough to decide for themselves, but why does the government insist on stepping on our personal rights and freedoms?

its not a big thing, but it bothers me nonetheless..I mean, I wear my belt and helmet anyway, but if I made the decision not to, why should I, a fully grown adult capable of abstract thought and an understanding of consequences be held legally liable for not wearing a seatbelt?

and dont give me shit about insurance companies. you already are in a crash, whether or not you are road pizza doesn't matter because you already raised everyone's premiums by getting in the fucking wreck to begin with.

let the manufacturers put even more annoying bells and alarms for undone seatbelts, but don't give me a fucking ticket. For Gods' Sakes, I'm a fuckin Adult!
