Bad wording on MSN News: "Pop starlet bludgeoned to death with mum and brother."
Does this imply the beaten-to-death-with-a-relative statistics have increased again?

To my knowledge, at least certain ones are. Wrestling in Mexico and Japan is revered much more then it is in America and is treated as more legit and it's stars more like heroes (not that I'm suggesting their dumb and don't realize it's a worked athletic performance, it just seems they don't get as bitchy and pissy like their American cousins do). Santo was and is a tremendous celebrity in Mexico, as are wrestlers like Konnan. The mask represents a tradition of honor and courage for them. So Nacho Libre was definitely accurate in that regard.

Actually, it's good. Very good. I'm looking for more DVDs...
Lately, I've been importing DVDs all over the world. I got the region 4 PAL version of Once Were Warriors from New Zealand or Australia.
That's a movie that ought to be studied. Where's Aristotle when you need him to write up a critique on a good movie.
My sister is ga-ga over Asian Drama, and I've bought her Palace recently... she loves it.
And recently, I've ordered Don de Dios by ebay because I couldn't find it in Mexico City (A version that wasn't pirated, I mean.)
Most definetly, Gael Garcia Bernal (among with Carron, Innaritu, and Del Torro) has sparked a Renaissance in the interest of Latin American drama (even in slap stick comedy with Ugly Betty.) I'm wondering what other great stuff are out there in Latin America that hasn't come to the interest of the world.
I'm thinking of uploading Rojo Amanecer on YouTube. It's a movie that needs a greater audiance. I would have to translate the Spanish subs in English-- but if the world can see what happened to Mexico in 1968-- then I think I've done a good job in being a human being.
Because getting people to empathasize is the least thing you can do to help out people... sharing awareness.

Wrestlers are very revered in Mexico... combine melo-drama and fighting, and you got a job down there. And you don't have to be major buff guy with muscles all over like what you see in WWF. You can be toneless, but if you got a mask-- people still love you.
I never watched Nacho Libre... not much of a Jack Black fan.
But I can tell you that mask wrestlers is definetly part of the culture (as evident in the movie Matando Cabos... which is great, but sadly has no English subs or dubs.)
Its great to be billingual. (or trillingual in my case--)

From what I've seen they might not be the fittest looking people in the world but those guys can move like crazy. I admire that kind of agility.

As "pick of destinyz' was a love letter to rock and roll "Nacho" was a love letter to the honor of masked wresteling. Not telling you to love the guy but he gives it respect.

I've seen a few old action and sci fi things with masked wrestelers. They have these guys scissor kicking vampires. But I would like to see an actual "good" film about them.

There aren't... it's the fact that they're bad what makes them good.
Think... Ed Wood and how Plan 9 from Outer Space has reached a cult status.
Even in Matando Cabos makes fun of the whole masked wrester fighting sexy amazonians and vampires at the same time.
Damn, I got to upload that scene in youtube. It's just-- funny. An ex-wrestler on LSD.

Mmmm...
Still, it's great to read stuff in another language. When I was in Mexico, I meet a friend who knew some English. Her name was Filly, and I would read certain parts of East of Eden (Mostly all the chapters about Kate Ames...) for her and she would read certain poems of Sor Juana to me (the Nauahtl stuff).
And it was a cool cultural exchange because neither one of us had read each others stuff.
Okay, granted I was stuck indoors for large parts of times... the times when I these serendiptious encounters with literary buffs... it was really fun. We would eat a taco and sometimes drink a beer at my aunt's store.

Argentina vs. Brazil, huh? That's worth watching!
Would you think that, if the US had been in the cup, that the only teams that would be a huge challenge were those two (argentina and Brazil)? (I'm just repeating something I'd overheard/been told).

Agreed. I was channel surfing once and came across the spanish language channel on DirecTV, and they were airing "Lucho Libre." After about 5 minutes, it was a wonder why they didn't have an air traffic controller in the ring.
*tcht* Air traffic control to Mucho Loco, you are cleared for 360 degree backflip missile dropkick, over.

I'm not really one to comment, seeing as how I just posted one of those topics myself. But We did have an official election topic back in 2004 that I believe came about a month or two before the actual election itself... it might be worth considering putting one out early, though.
-------------
When I was 10, he gave me a Case pocket knife, and talked about how it was a good "American made knife." When I was 18, he gave me a Gerber pocketknife made of high quality carbon steel, and talked about how it was "the only American made Gerber knife" he could find.
So last night, I showed him the Schrade I bought on eBay. He asked me why I bought it, and I told him I bought it online and that it was used, and I didn't mind IF it was used because I wanted an American made knife from before Schrade Cutlery was sold to Taylor and they started making the knives in China. I gave $28 for it.
He asked me why I didn't go and buy the cheaper, chinese made Schrade knife in the same style brand new, that "The Chinese have gotten to where they make pretty good knives anymore."
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH FUCK!!!!! WHY ME?!

The US was in the Cup... and got eliminated in the first round :)
More info, wiki.
Argentina and Brazil are the best soccer teams in the world (that's why the upcoming match is the match of the year, at least), but South American teams are good in general, that's why the Copa América is considered by some as the most important Championship, not including the World Cup, of course.
The US team is improving, though.

No - Mexico are the traditional big fish in CONCACAF (every World Cup it's Mexico, US, and AN Other) and the atmosphere in the grounds would suit Mexico better, as well as Mexico being a better team in general (albeit not in the last World Cup qualifiers).
After that, most South American teams are hit-or-miss, some more than others, quite often in the same game: Paraguay as consistant more than spectacular, while Uruguay underperform and Chile/Peru rely on star strikers coming through - and COlumbia rely on their players not being shot.
But, I hate to break it to you...the US were in the Copa America - they propped up their group, losing all three games: 4-1 to Argentina, 3-1 to Paraguay and 1-0 to Columbia.
Now, can that be the rest of England's Euro 2008 qualifying results, just so I can enjoy watching some proper football and not hear how we're going to win it (we won't), how our players are world class (they aren't), and so my summer will be drunken riot free.

I think it's too early to do an "Official" thread yet, I think we ultimately will have to, especially as the election nears, but I think without major candidates nailed down, it's too early in the game yet. I say we need to table the issue for now, wait until AT LEAST we have the Democratic and Republican candidates picked, and then keep a weathered eye on the horizon...er, I mean watch to see if we've got millions of stupid topics exploding and we need to corral it.
Agreed we will most likely have to do it, but it's too early to seriously consider it yet I think.

I am in favor.
I never really like stream lining threads, but some of them... like the Official Bush...
it makes sense.
I also believe (but it can be optional...) that it should be formated like this:
A mod should write it up (or post up whom ever that mod gets to write it...) And it should have 1.) official and, most importantly, non-biased statement parties platform who are serving (Republican, Democratic, others...) You know... "The Republicans believe in this and..." And "The Democrates believe in this and..." sort of statements about certain values.
2.) An official canidency list of runners. Should be copy and pasted from their official websites...
3.) A list of issues which are very likely going to be in this election, and from which people can choose from...
4.) A mod declaration about flamming and its consequence.

But it's still to early, I'm thinking a month, maybe a month and a half before the New Hamsphire primary.

That would be flame baiting on my part, especially since I can't statistically back it up at the moment.
But it would be funny as hell to watch, anyway.
....
Oh, I forgot to mention this earlier; I stopped by work yesterday to get some parts for this guitar I'm restoring, and my co-worker asked me about this prank phone call situation we had the other day. I explained it to him (someone called up the store, the boss answered, it was a prank phone call, and after they hung up he dialed *69 and passed the phone number off to the sherriff), and when I left work Friday the parents of the kids that pranked my boss called to say they would be stopping by to let the kids apologize to my boss in person.
It was the same group of three bratty kids I refused to give a ride to earlier in the week. ;-D
Moral of the story; don't torment retail sales people with prank phone calls if it's a place you shop at on a regular basis. It's bound to come back to bite you in the ass.

I like that idea, official threads are tough to police, and should always be a last resort. Something major like a Presidential election though makes it a must. Good that we're thinking about this early though, so we can be ready, we just can't jump the gun though either :)
