Did you have any type of overdraft protection? That helps, although... being charged 5 bucks each time will majorily suck if you spend 4.50 at Micky D's.
the worst part is that i am fastidious with my account and i keep track of everything (well apparently not well enough.
i have in my checkbook a positive $122. they say i owe them $170 for overdrawing by about $20 last week. they said that they had a returned check (of $2 to the catholic church we're getting married in of all places!) and that i had overdrawn twice in the same day and that they were having electric problems that day, so apparently that meant that my card's little safety dealy that wont let it go through if i can't pay for it didn't work.
Either way. i'm not a happy camper. i spent about an hour on the phone with the lady going over their books and mine for the past month and a half. we found a date that we both had the same balance, and went from there. i missed like six things according to her, $30 to price chopper, $15 to rite aid (which my fiance and i both swear we used her card for that time) and a couple $5 and $2 trips to the pet store for mice.
The best solution is to not call costumer service... it's WAY better to actually go to your account On-line. It's exact.
what i think happened is that sometime in january i lost track of my books and i went over to the bank and asked for my balance, re-setup what i had and then along came my fucking power company (as usual, they are fucking morons) deciding to deposite my check from DECEMBER during FEBRUARY! the same or next fucking day. so already i'm off by $40 then my own retardation kicks in when i pay a credit card bill and instead of subtracting $40 i ad $60 (where the fuck did 60 come from, beats me). and there's where i went wrong.
and usually when i balance my check book i subtract $60 from the grand total just to make sure this shit doesn't happen. now i might as well just subtrack $100 instead.
Grant it, it could have been a lot worse, but you would figure my bank would at least call and tell me that I OWE THEM FUCKING $170 within a week, right?
170 bucks... is nothing.
Yeah, I know it sounds horrible... but they won't really look at it unless it's a major amount. Or the amount of times.
You were lucky that they notified you within a week... you must have withdrawn several times this week. I've seen cases where 3 weeks passed for huger amounts.
Ask them if they could reverse the fees, or a few. Tell them you've been there for years, and etc-- I was very leniant. When my boss wasn't looking, I always reveresed the fees. I always got away with things if it was possible. (Not for two cases though... MAJOR ASSHOLES. It pays to be nice and calm, remember that folks.)

well, they paid the overdraws, i guess that was the protection, instead of me owing price chopper. but it's one of thos basic no annual fees, no service fees, free checks kind of account.

well, i walked to the bank itself. i went to the counter, asked em how much i had. the problem is that like four hours after i asked them, a check from my power bill was deposited. I had factored that in BEFORE i sort of lost track of my account - so when i asked for the new balance i had assumed that the check had been deposited like two months prior and that the balance i had was right, since i hadn't gone anywhere that day anyway.
170 bucks... is nothing.
Yeah, I know it sounds horrible... but they won't really look at it unless it's a major amount. Or the amount of times.
so basically, i could have been sending checks left and right for the rest of the month and not find out until they start coming back or people start telling me my checks all bounced? my bank wouldn't have said anything to me?

well, they DIDN'T contact me, I contacted them because my card was declined.

i think i'll call them tomorrow, ask to talk to the same girl again as before and be nice to her, apologize for seeming agitated - since it was my first checking account and it had been less than a year - that i'm getting married in four months and that obviously i can't really afford their fees. i wish i could stop payment on some things, but i mean, i've arleady used that toilet paper from price chopper...

That is why you gotta occasionally check for yourself. Remember, if they arn't with you, they're against you. They are certainly not with you. therefore....

Bounced checks are another different matter...
It's one thing to make a mistake. Before grocery stores had a way to ensure a check had funds automatically... a lot of wives and mothers used to make checks with insufficient funds but they had those two to three days to deposit money.
Lot of those woman got made at me when their checks bounced... but anways.
Frequently writing bad checks is illegal.
Not only will the bank notify you if you're doing it way too much... most likely the police will to..
But you can't imagine how easy it is to use a debit card and find out that you owe money. Most banks, I think, cap of the fees around 60 bucks.
Imagine it... it could be worse.
170 bucks easy to recover.
well, they DIDN'T contact me, I contacted them because my card was declined.
You got really lucky then...

Eh-- I lived in Mexico City, much more worse than N.Y.
I would survive.
But anyways... Just hope you could find a nice guy like how I was. I never took risks, but I always pushed the limits. Waving fees was a limit for me... I did it all the time. Maybe, except, for two cases where the guy and woman were so goddamn obnoxious... I only did the minimum requirement of helping them, but not doing the friendly bonus of waving fees. It's not something I din't have to do unless it's a mistake or something.

Don't go to a teller... BTW.
A teller don't know much, FYI. Their duty is to sell credit cards and other bank products first. Second job... taking in transactions. Costumer service on the telephone will aid you better.
If I were you, I would definetly start using on-line banking.
It's very safe, and often it's more detailed than the teller screen.
When I used to party... I would always check on-line my account to see if my checks were deposited. That made me feel better because the feeling of having people seeing your card declined is embarassing.

yes, but say i'm walking around thinking i have $100 in my account. i make a $30 payment to my credit card company, a $20 check to my fiance to cover one of her bills and $50 check for dinner one night. I assume i have the money, but i dont the whole time. I was lucky i tried using my card before my check book. I'm just frightened about how far it could have gone and that's a typical ammount of checks i may right during bill paying time each month.
But you can't imagine how easy it is to use a debit card and find out that you owe money. Most banks, I think, cap of the fees around 60 bucks.
yes, they charged me someodd amount for each overdraw and returned check.

no doubt. I'm just really freaked out because I really could have fucked myself over.

I guess so.

isn't there like a major split between the better part of mexico city and the really bad parts?

this is an extremely small local bank we're talking about. they have maybe four locations total in only one small area of upstate NY. pretty much i've only dealth with ONE office lady and i've had savings and such accounts since i was a kid. and the lady had to leave the teller counter and go to the office for me. so, i'm thinking anyone i talk to is also the costumer service rep as well as the teller. but maybe i'll stop by the branch with the office lady in it.
If I were you, I would definetly start using on-line banking.

It's free, I know that. It's a matter of telling them i want to start.

having an up to date statement is the main advantage to me now, because it just takes me losing track and one person depositing a check a lot later then expected for it to royally fuck me. not to mention, having an exact balance is nice to know when i'm about to pay bills.
thanks for the info, fli.

I toyed around with some forum software last night, but actually I'm not sure if I should take on that role. Things never seem to go well. I'd be willing to host on my space, but then we run into the prob of no one else having access to the database (so dredd's neat flash things would be limited for example).

This was the problem. Every site i had fell off the internet, paid and unpaid, or when tried to pay for another year with existing account. There was a delay (family expenses) but i've switched to home hosting, which althou not particularly fast for heavy traffic, it's not like we EVER had heavy traffic : P
The key point being that the hosting is under my control, not in a psycho world-domination "Mwahahaha.." kind of control, but unlimited space, access to sockets etc, and can paid in local currency.

They were working fine until "someone" pulled it down suddenly. I had no site as i told you, and was therefore kindof relying on those tech demos (chat, mp3 player) being available on ya site.
Anyway, the best news (not sure if u missed it?) is the Adobe just launched Apollo! **queue Surfing on a Rocket music**
It fixes all those numerous problems we were having as far as cross-browser & cross-platform inconsistencies. When Adobe was looking round for a html-renderer they went with, you guessed it, Webkit (the opensource core of Apple's Safari), and surprisingly not Mozilla! (Those MacroMedian's always had a soft spot for Macs ;O)
With Apollo's local file storage my long-time "evil plan" is to finally find a way to widely distribute the Dag BBS (..like p2p fashion). This is why i mentioned "taking the Dag underground" (off grid) in a recent post.
My server is on 24/7, but with maintenance, power outages, or heavy traffic, hacks and attacks etc, we're better off planning for a way to spread the hosting between members.
In this way we could free the site from relying on just one hosting account, as well as other interesting possibilities.. **queue Maniacle Laughter Track**

I posed this problem to my credit union clerk today, about a banking error.
Here's what she told me.
If the bank had equipment problems that allowed you to access money that you were not entitled to.
1) you are not responsible for that. that's their fault, not yours.
2) they cannot charge you for mistakes made by them. It is against banking laws.
3)any money that you used you will probably have to repay. You cannot be charged fees by a bank because of their mistake.
So go see them -BE NICE- find out how the problem happened & argue your points. If they made a mistake ,You've got a good case to get out of the surcharges, but you'll still be liable for your purchases.
It sucks but its not a huge amount & it didn't ruin your credit rating.

i'm going over in about 20 minutes. i thought it also had something to do with me asking for a balance and then later that day a check being deposited. but i went through my own record keeping and I was off from them before that, because i didn't ask for my balance, everything before the date i thought was the problem ads up to what i had, and that included the check i assumed was deposited late. so...i'm going to talk to the lady.
I took out nearly $300 from our wedding savings account just in case, because even if they do still charge me, i still need to pay for the bills next week.

Like fli said, online banking is the way to go. I use it all the time. But as they're a small local bank, like you said, they might not have that service. I dunno. But it is damn useful.

they have it, you have to ask for it. luckily it doesn't cost anything so i asked for it
and i realized after about half an hour of talking with the lady she has absolutely no control over services. and made it very dificult for me to get any of the info i wanted. she said she would submit a request and said that they generally don't waive fees unless it's their own fault and that even to find out it's their own fault i'd have to PAY them $20 AN HOUR to go through their records and mine to find out where everything went sour. also, if i want any info on any statements before January 2007 i would need to PAY them $5 per month i want the records for. great, i bounced a fucking $2 check to a church and they want me to pay them money to find out if they were the reason i'm in the red?
bah, this is bullshit, yes, i went over, they told me there would be problems with that, but they also said things aren't always black and white and that exceptions are made. i talked to the same woman who told me this when i opened the account and she was putting up road blocks left and right. I had to go to the smaller satellite branch the next town over just to find somebody to give me the corporate phone number so i can even talk to somebody who can actually do something with my account other then submit requests and not make promises.
not to mention, the lady told me to come back later earlier today and that was like half an hour before closing, so by the time i got the phone number to talk to somebody, it was already past closing time.
hey fli, how easy is it to set up an international checking account from the US to mexico?
i dont know why this is pissing me off so much really. I knew that if i overdrew i'd get raped up the ass, but i was also running around this past week thinking i had $100 in my account. what i thought was the problem really isnt and the real problem is really far back, and i'm no banker, they jsut gave me my last two statements and said "try and prove us wrong". on top of all of that we have $1000 we need to pay to get my fiance's fucking car fixed, for fucks ake we're driving around plastic duct taped to the back window, rent is due next week and i would have BARELY been able to pay it WITH my next paycheck WITH that $100 in my account. not to mention a $45 power bill and a $30 credit payment.
and now, even after i get all of this fixed, i still need to wait FOUR MONTHS before i can even apply for a new debit card and we fucking pay half our bills online, i dont think we even get paper copies of our bills for the phone and TV. this is really fucking obnoxious. i should have just put all my money in a fucking box under the bed, at least that way i know things were paid for when i paid them and i know how much i've got. bah.

Just find a huge banking system such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Washington Mutual.
You can use your ATM card with either their machines (mostly at tourist populated areas in Mexico) or with the their sister-business systems.
I know that Wells Fargo works with Bancomer. I used my Wells Fargo ATM card at a Bancomer ATM machine without much problems.
But you may want to call costumer service. Things will change, and I remember Patriot Act made SO many things difficult.
But... you said you want an account that's international. I don't know of any accounts that could be like that. You could withdraw money from your US account... but owning one is difficult because you need to meet certain requirements.
BUT, I know for the fact, that there are tons of options. For example, I have an account for my godson with Wells Fargo. His papa (my second cousin) doesn't know (mostly because he's horrible with money) but I told the mother to open an account with Bancomer. Once I got the important numbers such as the routing and branch number... and other stuff... I opened an account where I could deposit money into an account that will instantly (okay, 3 to 5 business days for transactions under 10,000 bucks) go to my godson's account. Already converted at the exchange rate.
I pay a buck for every one hundred dollars that goes in there, and it's great.
I wouldn't recommend this for you because how are you gonna get a Mexican ID or a Matricula if your a US citizen?
Best option is to talk with your bank's costumer service or the CTR (the guys who open the accounts.)
They will give you the best options.

I never see you on AIM, and I seem to have misplaced your email. Maybe I'll shoot you an NG PM tonight since I know you'd actually read it at this point and you can give me your email or however you want to do that. I've just got some questions, as I've learned a bit more and feel more comfortable with the program then the last time I talked to you about all this stuff.

It's nin ja turtles day. Those of you with called roles know when to be waiting for the custimized turtle van. Those who haven't called one yet get in on it now. We still have three of the actual turtles available. I called leo.

pro is casey and seven is april so that could play on their sexual tension. You won't know untill you get in on this trip. Call your rolls or be left in the cold people

I'm done with work and school...
I turn on the TV and I'm watching a documentery on Deaf Coulter, and holy shit-- I see a friend I haven't seen for years.
Her name was Bryce, and she was Deaf.
We both used to be in Special Ed from Kinder to maybe the 4th grade. She knew some hearing, I knew some Sign.
It's weird to see her all grown up... and SEXY.
Sexy deaf...
I know it's her because they're using video fotage when she was a kid... and I'm recognizing Miss Flagg, our teacher's assistant.
Man... I wish I'm back in Sign. I quite for another course, but the sign one was SOOOOO much funner and interesting.
If only it was cheap, then I would take it as a recreation class.
*sigh*

I would only take a recreational class if it was for a fun skill like that. Like I keep meaning to take up some martial art or something because I did a bit as a kid and then it basically fell away. The only problem is I know that starting as a grownup I couldn't get all that good.

... I have learned a very important lesson today.
Hide IP Platinum + Firefox = DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!!
I am now in the market for a registry cleaner, so that I may delete the firefox entry entirerly and possibly reinstall it without all the fucked up errors I am getting. If anyone knows of a free/cheap option, let me know.
I hate Internet Explorer. I hate it, so... fucking... much....

Here's a phun poll. How many people around here need to dick around with resumes?
I actually sorta like doing it, now that I have stuff to put on it. Most of the time is spent formatting, keeping it to a single page, and using really asinine words. Hella entertaining.
I'm at my internship and have little to do. Meh.

Resumes are fun. Cover letters are shit.
Quote of the day: @Nysssa "What is the word I want to use here?" @freakapotimus "Taint".
