i have to say, new jersey must have the lowest IQ mean out of any state in the US.

we get that entire fucking state visiting my area every weekend and major holiday. and none of them can figure out a goddamn thing. in the mornings before lessons go out people sign their kids in. there are 4+ signs coming into the ski school line saying "GET YOUR RESERVATIONS/TICKES, AND RENTALS BEFORE COMING HERE!" and guess where folks go the minute they walk in the door, after they read these signs? thats right, walk right up to the fucking ski school line and say "i want a ski school lesson" all the while looking confused because the great big signs above the desk which read "PLAY N SKI: 4-6 year olds" and "JR. ADVENTURE: 7-12 year olds" is not descrimptive enough. i always start out the conversation with:

"morning. do you have your tickets yet?"
"we have reservations"
"then you go to the resurvations desk...right over there"
"but we already made them"
"yes, you go there to get your tickets for the day"
"but we have a reservation"
"Just take six steps to your left and talk to that lady over there"

or

"have tickets?"
"yes"
"rentals?"
"oh...i thought you guys would do all that..."

(do these people seriously want to get rid of their children so quickly they can't handle walking another ten yards to the rental area of the lodge and getting them a pair of fucking skis?)

or my favorite:

"how old are they?"
"this one is 3 and this one is 7'
"the programs start at 4 years old"
"oh...just turned four..."
"....you sure? okay then, well you'll sign the 4 year old in over here at the "Play n' Ski" line...and the 7 year old right here..."
"oh..different lessons? erm...yeah, he's six..."
"alrighty... well, then. have either of them skied before?"
"the seve....six year old has, he can stop and turn and ride the lift...the th...four year old has never skied before"
"okay, the four....year old will be a "new to sport" and the six.... year old will be a "pioneer" level"
"um..yeah, the older one has never skied before either"

all the while the kids are fighting with eachother behind him. BAH. you fucks need to raise your own damn children. going on a a FAMILY trip usually means spending time with your FAMILY not leaving your wife at the hotel to bring the kids skiing and leaving the kids in ski school all day. douches.

grant it, most of the kids are great, but i wind up having to pop some advil after working the sign in line at the beginnign of the day.

one last thing, we bring the kids into "kids' zones" where there are no parents allowed. usually because it's just something cool and because if a kid who is so sheltered and cant handle being away from mom and dad all day sees mom or dad before lesssons go out, they cry and we hate that. so we try to explain that mom and dad arent allowed in the kids zones. they often just walk thorugh the doors and past the "NO PARENTS" signs like they own the fucking place and get annoyed when we tell them to stop.

also the older kids are in the downstairs part of the lodge, so if a parent is picking them up after the lesson and they dont catch the kid at the hill,t hey need to go into the main part of the lodge and go down some stairs. half of them stop listening to me when i say "okay, you go to the last door of this lodge...' and allt eh while i'm busying explaining they ahve to go downstairs and some parent flipped out because he had massive ADD and didn't hear me say " go down stairs!" and he was up int he main lodge waiting for his kid... and then he walked outt he wrong way and i said i was sorry that he hadn't heard me correctly or i may have said something wrong and he yelled "you could have a sign!" and blew us all off. is that any way to act infront of your child?

Where is the fun in that??

a teacher once threw a dry-erase marker at a kid who was disrupting class, missed and hit some girl square in the eye and she cried for a good twenty minutes.

my highschool only had a few rooms with dry earase boards.

my college now is still all chalk boards. yay community college

(goo, double post!)

you know, i felt the exact same way, i refused to even apply to any community colleges when i was first looking around. my dad even said throughout high school that if i dont shape up then i'll wind up at north country community college (where i'm going now). i felt that if i had to resort to that, then i might as well not go to college, that i somehow failed at life.

then (and i must admit this was the key factor) i met my girlfriend, and she was going to north country for massage therapy (it's actually a very competitive program, most people think it's some cake program...its not, they have some crazy sciences and business classes to do). and i wanted to be near her. so i was considering a state college (SUNY POTSDAM) and then i started looking at the costs...my parents were going through a divorce and mom wasn't helping at all because she's a teacher and my dad can only contribute so much. but combined they made over 100,000 a year and i didn't get any financial aid. i was a C student in highschool so i only got $1500 in scholarships my senior year...so, i applied to the community college...got in, and decided to go there. and i'm very happy there. the classes are just as difficult and challenging as any large college, at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the class sizes.

i plan on transferrign to colorado state university after i get my Associates in libearl arts (this choice is because i wanted to get all of my general ed out of the way so i can change my mind on what i really want to major in when i move out west without losing credits witht he specialized programs here)

Sounds like a plan. I don't know why anyone would go to a big university, considering that comunity colleges are cheaper and provide an intermediate degree.

Community colleges are often pretty good or similar in some programs, liberal arts tends to not be one of them.

I would start checkin with whatever advisor you need to at Colo state U asap to make sure you can transfer credits. I was lookin to take summer classes this year, and my advisor straight up said to not go to a CC. U of M doesn't won't even consider it for transfer credits......of course....U of M is pretty special so....... ;)

(self-gratifying? Damn straight!).

Sounds like a plan. I don't know why anyone would go to a big university, considering that comunity colleges are cheaper and provide an intermediate degree.

The experience of meeting 4,000 unique individuals, a couple hundred famed professors, and a more prestigious degree, opportunities galore, wider range of subjects offered (I swear, U of M has a policy where if a program you want to major in isn't available, they'll just build a new building for it.....), comraderie you form with your peer scholars, getting the fuck out of your hometown, and countless other reasons.

Big colleges aren't for everyone, but that doesn't mean they don't have advantages over little ones. Especially Ivy League schools. The name and reputation of those schools alone is usually sufficient for one to get an edge up career-wise in whatever field you want.

Small schools offer certain advantages as well, but I've always held the impression that the big boys will always offer more, if for no other reason than the fact that they're big (size wise).

Let me put it this way:
when I worked in a machine shop, the guy on the floor running the Lathe didn't go to college, and worked his way through the ranks for 20 years. The guy with an engineering degree from MSU running the Lathe started 2 weeks before I got there. The guy with a Masters in engineering and a bachelor's in business owned the shop.

Men tend to be wimpier about being sick than women do. I think part of it is because they get sick less often, maybe? I don't like being taken care of when I'm sick, although it is nice to know someone cares enough to look out for you. But I don't think I've ever had a boyfriend or even just a regular guy friend who didn't want to be taken care of when he was sick.

If you don't mind, and it isn't interfering with your life too severely, by all means pamper him when he's sick. But if it's getting in the way of your studies and important things like that, remind him that he's a grown-up and that if he's so sick that he needs a caretaker then he should go to the doctor. It's kind of cold-hearted, but he can't expect you to be his nursemaid. I reserve that speech for when a guy is being unreasonable and I have something really important to attend to. Otherwise I'm usually there with a care package of orange juice, hot tea, illness-appropriate medicines, and lots of get-well hugs.

He's actually kinda opposite in that it's lilke he suffers from a perpetual sort of cold, it just sort of lingers on and on; mostly because he doesn't get enough sleep. And I know that he also has some sort of sleep apnea, but he has Wal-Mart insurance, which covers for literally 3 doctor's visits a year; of which one has been used for the strep throat. (Which, coincidentally, what could one do about sleep apnea? I know part of it is due to his weight, but it still needs to be taken care of in some way, since bad sleep leads to other unhealthy habits)

Usually I do aim to be there each night, and the one night I wanted to go straight home, he didn't wnat me to because it would mean the first time we'd not seen each other in a 24 hour period since I moved here. He's more sentimental than me, that's for sure. But believe me, he can be spoiled at times; such as that I'll give him head to toe scratches, which he loves (and I mean head to toe) or that I attempt to give him foot rubs (he has farm boy feet, and I'm seriously tempted to drop major money for a damn pedicure. They're at a point where he could pull the calluses out and hack at them with a pocketknife).

The thing with sleep apnea is that it can be caused by a number of things. It could be as simple as his throat drying out causing the mucus in his throat to get tacky which would cause his epiglottis to partially occlude his airway or it could be caused by inflammation, swelling, or even a growth in his pharynx. If he has a sort of chronic congestion, it might not hurt to have him visit an ear/nose/throat doctor. For temporary relief, a glass of water before bed or the use of a humidifier may help.

... I actually did that to myself on one occasion. I was pulling flaky dead skin off my foot, and the next thing I knew I had those steel cutical clippers out taking big chunks of callused skin off of my feet.

My feet kind of looked odd for a week, but they quite drying out to the point of cracking open and bleeding afterwards.

He tries to sleep on his side but that's often uncomfortable for extended periods of time. He drinks plenty of liquids and already has the humidifier.

SevenSeize: I know that they're not THAT expensive, but I'm pretty sure they'd charge extra simply because his feet are THAT bad. Bad as in he could use sandpaper and it still wouldn't get all the calluses removed. Bad as in he regularly stretches the calluses out and hacks them away with a pocketknife. And he's bad enough in that the only time lotion gets put on his feet is when I do it, and he won't do the whole "wear socks so the lotion sets in" because he hates the feeling of lotion inside socks.

If that's the case, you may want to get him checked out by a specialist. I had similar symptoms when I was younger, my doctor thought it was my tonsils, but it turned out to be a cyst the size of an egg that would block my airway whenever I relaxed my throat. If the back of his tongue is constantly coated this may definitely be the case.
