MARRIAGE = NO.
Neither you or your future bride, no matter what great people you may be, have and IDEA how you're going to turn out. YOU JUST GOT OUT OF HIGHSCHOOL, AT BEST, YOU'VE BEEN ON YOUR OWN FOR A YEAR.
You've got to fucking listen to me man, I'm trying to save your life. This marriage shit is fucking BLOOD, man. Once she has your child, not even a divorce can separate you. Love is NOT a good enough reason to get married. Wait until you're both ready to have kids before you set a date. Marriage exists solely as a financial institute to support children. No matter how great this girl is.
I know WAY too many people my age (25) who are already divorced, some even TWICE. If she really is meant to be, she'll understand that a long courtship will help prove your love.
Failing that, get a fucking prenup. You're young, and you have not reason to listen to me when you have a girl as your motivating factor. Notice how I used the word "girl"? I want you to think about that. Is she REALLY ready to be a mother? She'd better be. And she'd better have 10 grand either in equity or in savings if she's thinking of starting a family.

You know what Leonardo?
Chaucer was the father of English literature and yet-- he never used punctuation and wrote it anyway he wanted. Shakespeare invented several new words in his plays. And look how famous they were.
(And yet... in the United States at least, we have people who hassle Spanglish and Ebonics when, really, the orgins of English are much more humble than people really think.)
I have a problem with "proper punctuation." Infact, I have a problem with this whole idea that English could be proper. While I know the rules and all that, I believe they're stylistic because the only thing people need is the period. Everthing else is just elaborating on ending the basic subject and predicate sentence. I think I annoyed Nazi-English-teacher because I was determinate to keep my English the way that sounds most natural.
Gotta story to tell...
I had a teacher whose name was Professor Cox and she was a bitch. Being a guy from San Jose, I end my sentences in prepositions and she hated it. For some reason, this phrase made her most upset. "Where you at?"
Anyways, in California, people often use intransitive verbs as transitives. For example: "That sucks."
One day she asks me something about Troilus and Criseyde and I said something like this. "Oh, I think she sucks."
She sighs and asks me if I know anything about proper grammar or proper English in the most insulting way.
"Do you know what's an intransitive verb, Che?"
*Me looking dumb on purpose...* "Err... yeah?"
"Then fix the sentence so that it doesn't end with a transitive verb ."
Wittiest thing I said in my academic life:
"I think she sucks... Cox."
(Cox souds like Cocks which means penis.)
I was so proud of myself for thinking that up and executing it so flawlessy.

MARRIAGE = NO.
so it seems

true
You've got to fucking listen to me man, I'm trying to save your life. This marriage shit is fucking BLOOD, man. Once she has your child, not even a divorce can separate you. children are a ways off. we know that.
I know WAY too many people my age (25) who are already divorced, some even TWICE. If she really is meant to be, she'll understand that a long courtship will help prove your love.
i have plenty of older friends in the same issue. our roommate is 21 now and she's going through a bad divorce. dated a marine for 5 years, but he was overseas the entire time. grew up away from eachother, now they aren't compatible...he got out and she moved down to SC to marry him, and now they're back to NY and unhappy as hell.
Failing that, get a fucking prenup. You're young, and you have not reason to listen to me when you have a girl as your motivating factor. Notice how I used the word "girl"? I want you to think about that. Is she REALLY ready to be a mother? She'd better be. And she'd better have 10 grand either in equity or in savings if she's thinking of starting a family.
i look at life and love this way. I love her, true, not really enough to get married. we've known eachother for a couple of years, became really good friends. began dating and all that jazz. we were head over heels etc right off the bat, and we understand the period of infatuation is going to last for at least a year or two more, if not longer. either way, we know we are young. She is actually 23, and i'm turning 20 soon enough. Truth is, marriage is seen now adays as just something you do without thought. our futures are already connected in more ways then would be pleasent if we were to have a falling out. and we've had some nasty tiffs and arguments (often ending with me sleeping on the couch because she technically owns the bed) and we know we'll be in more. we are self reliant already, and have been living together since the beginning of the past summer. and to my point. if love truly is eternal and we truly are soul mates then it will work out whether we wed this year, or 2012 or in ten years time. and if its not going to work out, then it would fall apart despite being married in ten years or five or this year. being that we will probably stay together anyway through the rest of our schooling, from moving outwest together to her going to gradschool and me beginning a carreer in three years.
life has many obstacles and many surprises. we're on the journy together and i for one am estatic, and so is she.
I only post because I care.
i understand. i've had poor reactions from some, really encouraging from others. odly enough my parents werent as upset as i expected. my dad is really helping. he is getting heather confirmed and getting us in with a catholic church so we can have a catholic wedding to appease our religious parents (and actually not be drains on society). either way, i dont think it should be justified in money or children or needs vs. wants. you get married, you grow old and insane together. because if anything, we'll learn from the experience even if it is negative, and frankly, being young and headstrong, we probably wont listen to anyone anyway as it is.

Hope you know what you're doing Malachy, because I have seen exactly the same shit FUNK has with people at mine and his age. I've seen two marriages end in divorce because the wife cheated and couldn't handle being committed like that leaving a broken family, and there's one that I know of where fidelity was an issue but the one partner dosen't know that. Getting married this young can end up being the worst idea you'll ever have, so be very very sure this is what both of you want and it's something you can handle. The rest of your life is a lot longer then is readily apparent.
I echo the recommendation for Children Of Men, I average one movie every week and that is bar none the out and out best film I've seen in months (I think the last film I walked out of feeling that unequivocally good about the viewing experience was probably Pirates of the Carribean, I really dug Eragon, but those stories always have very obvious beats that you can't help but not see coming), I thought it was very powerful and the review I read on it was totally without basis. I don't think the film is too cynical, it definitely ends with an idea of hope, it's just not one of those very typical hollywood happily ever afters and frankly, that was a breath of fresh air to me. Spend the money and go see it.

There's more to knowing and being secure in yourself than paying the rent. Marrage is something real you can't wrap fatalistic philosophy around. In the end it's yourself you're trying to convince and if it's something you wanted that much you wouldn't need convincing.
Warning: TV quote
Dr. Gregory House: "Show me a 20 year old who's not in love. You get married at 20 you'll be supprised who you wake up next to at 30."
Of course that couple turned out to be half siblings. Your case isn't nearly as interesting.

Actually, you have a good point there. Bah, I was in a mood, anyway. I love using made-up words, so I should probably ignore any punctuation that doesn't add to readability.
Have you ever read Ricky Gervais's Flanimals? There are tonnes of made up words in there. And it's such a good read!
Gotta story to tell...

I have a warped sense of humour, what can I say? ;-)
I once walked into the deli I used to work at, and was stocking the meat case when I noticed that one of the packages said "Smoked Turkey." I looked over at the deli manager and said, "You know, I tried to smoke a turkey once, but I just couldn't get the papers to light."
It took her a full 30 seconds to get the joke.

it doesn't much matter to me about the length of the engagement or when we get married. If she is dead set on this year or something, nobody is going to stop her. I've changed a lot since meeting her, and so has she, we are maturing and growing together and it's really sort of cool to look back on how we've changed. This is a turning point in my lfie.
and while I'm not going to tell you to sign a pre nup like FUNK did, I am going to advise you to sit down and talk about responsibility, money, and children. You say children aren't on your current agenda. Well, NO birth control is 100% effective unless one of you gets snipped....children happen.
we've basically been spending the last week just sitting at tables talking about the future. our plans what we want with ourselves, where we differ in views, etc. how we feel about children (we both like kids, but don't want any until we've both got carreers. etc. the last week feels like one really long serious conversation....so of course, i have to keep ordering pizza and making the poor delivery guy feel awkwards when i show up in womens undies at the door.

That's very good...
I believe that many artists' work are protected up to a hundred years in certain cases (Disney)-- but in most cases it's only 50 years (like Garcia Lorca).
It's a good deal because... how often do people starve while trying to claim recognition as one of the best poets (or best enough to be anthologized for several years...)

From what I understand as long as there's still someone who thinks it's worth the money they can renew the copywrite. Fucking "Happy Birthday" is still under copywrite. Took two people to write that. I'm not sure if one was music and the other lyrics but that's how it is.

Ironically enough Bob Frost gave lectures on the stupidity of copyright laws, and how they've severely restricted innovators.
In his own words "What did I do to earn this money, besides being related to this dead man? Don't get me wrong, I love the money, but I didn't do a damn thing to earn it...."
He thinks copyright should only last till the inventor kicks it, if not less.

It definitely did. That new kid they had on there to replace Topher Grace just did nothing for me. The rest of the crew tried, but I think without Grace and Kutcher, the dynamic just went to hell really. They should have just been done with it the year before and spared us what was to me a very awkward last season.

It was the same with x-files. Robert Patrick is a fine actor and it was a good character but without Mulder they didn't have a show.
