I've heard bits and pieces of Lopez's stuff, he seems like he's an interesting comedian. "My first official decree as Pope is to replace the communal wine with TEQUILLA!!! Why you ask? Because I have brass balls!" Then he lifts his garment and you see to brass balls swinging around from his shorts....

Looks like the pastor of our church is going to get the axe here soon. Enough people have complained to the head deacon about the pastor, that he (the deacon) is going to ask the pastor to step down.

It's going to get nasty before it gets better... and it's already started too. The pastor set out this new "rule" this past sunday that any member of the church that hasn't been to sunday services in three consecutive sunday's can't vote in business meetings. Completely unconstitutional... wouldn't work anyway... he's just doing this because he knows the end is near. I hope it comes down to a special business meeting too, because there's a LOT of people who he has driven off in the past few years who are still members of the church that would just love to show up and vote his ass out. Me included.

There is something that has been bothering me this semester, why is it that the stupid people always think they know the right answer, why do they keep speaking up after being wrong five times and why do they argue with the professor after he tells them they're wrong? More importantly how the hell did they make it to upper division courses?

I don't think George Lopez is funny at all. I tried to watch all of "why you cryin" but it was ALL "I'm a mexican and this is how mexicans do things". I was so bored with it I couldn't watch it all. I love Mencia. Some of his jokes are tired, but I think he's hilarious. I think his racial humor is much more funny than Chappelle's and it's much more overt. Also, he doesn't have lame rap guests on ruining a good 15 minutes of his show. I think he takes the "de de de" thing too far, now it's just getting annoying. But most of the time, he's funny.

If you're going to watch a show with a comedian, watch Rescue Me. Yeah, it's a drama, but it's on of the best shows on TV. Dennis Leary is really a great actor.

The best Mind of Mencia moment...

When he was screaming on the horn to tell people to go work. Jesus CHRIST I have wanted to ask lazy asses what the hell they are doing in a coffee shop at 3 in the afternoon doing jack, scream at bums, etc.

That takes super balls.

Gotta agree there, Leary is showing damn good range in this show (yeah yeah, I know most of what Tommy does is the typical Dennis Leary "angry comedy" thing, but he's shown there are some real layers to this character, and he can play it).

Personally? I find George Lopez very funny, Mencia not so much, some of his racial jokes come off really cheap and unfunny to me, like he's trying too hard, or dragging it out way too long. Chappelle was really funny, but I think the best stuff he was doing there was the crap where he was calling Charlie Murphy in on the "Rick James Stories".

At 9/9/05 03:14 AM, fli wrote: I'm not sure what's Chapelle's view on free speech. I just assume that has a wide open view on it.

Yeah, wide open for black people, but apparently if a white comedian said certain words - in any context, even without malice of any kind - he'd be "furious"

Now, normally this wouldn't annoy me, but since Chappelle makes his money from saying "THE CENSORED N WORD" on cable television, he's a huge jackoff for taking this stance on something like this.

C'mon Elfer.
I know you have a sense of humor. After all, you did post that Schiavo "I'm not hungry" pic... If you're white and you don't like how Chapelle makes fun of white people...
Just remember that he makes black people too...
And Mexicans.
And Asians...

That's what annoys me, but not for the reasons you think. See, when all a comedian does is make lame jokes about their own race, as well as jokes about how their race is different from white people, it's commonly referred to as "racial garbage"

Not "racist," "racial." It just means that the person is exploiting their skin colour to get ahead in the world of comedy, while the material itself isn't as strong as that of someone who got into the comedy scene by their own merits.

Chappelle is the kind of person who takes advantage of white audiences by making the jokes that he knows white people aren't allowed to make. Don't get me wrong, this is fine and dandy every once in a while, but when your entire career is defined by this type of joke, you're a hack.

The only person I've seen who did mainly racial jokes, who managed to come up with material good enough to deserve to be where he is would be Russell Peters. He's easily 20 times the comedian Chappelle will ever be, because his jokes aren't just "taboo," they're GOOD.

Ehh...
I bought it because of Rick James... and "Grapes???"

Every time I hear someone say "I'm Rick James Bitch" these days, I want to stab them in the pancreas and make their belly weep tears of insulin. It was somewhat funny, ONCE.

I can deal with it if you just enjoy the bit, but if you go around saying it to people, then I'm going to make you a deal. If you ever see me walking on the street or anything, please come up to me, say hello, then say "I'm RIck James, Bitch." and I will stab you in the pancreas. Ok?

Did anyone see that teleathon a couple of days ago where a rapper said George Bush doesn't care about black people? I think it was also played on the Daily Show. Thats comedy, the unexpected things that just happen, not these stand up shows. I was watching my local news channel a few days ago and the anchor was making a joke, but he didnt think it through I think and came out really racist. I dam near fell off the couch.

All I can say about this subject is, you guys are lucky. In this country, Benny Hill is held as an intellectual humorist, representative of the "smart comedy". With the exception of one or two, all local comedians attempt to mimick his style, or the style of this other guy whose entire act consisted of half-elaborated cuss words. That Diceman or something.

AND THIS TIME I'M NOT JOKING. OUR COMEDIANS SUCK. With the possible exception of Coco Legrand. But that's it.

Ummmm, I would sya its a combination of a and b with a little bit of c. The problem isnt directly with FEMA but the laws and red tape. Currently a state must ask for FEMAs help first, if it doesnt happen FEMAs hands are technically tied. However the laws shoudl be changed so that FEMA can intervien without being asked by the state and assume command and control of the area. Also the directors are too incompetant. The idea behind using his campaign people is that there would be a faster reaction in an effort to make the president look good. However since all three are incompetant and vastly underqualified it backfired. So it is a bit of both. I think if they had a stronger and mroe experienced leadership team they would have mroe credibility and they would probally chop through the red tape with a chainsaw ratehr than walk around it from a sense of commradery and brotherhood with the personal in the theater.

I would bother asking what the hell are you yappin' about, but I just got me tickets for Judas Priest on the 13th, so I don't really care. WOO! ROCK ON! YEAH! *headbang*

Whatever. I'm guessing it's just another American "Boo Hoo, our Emergency Management eats children" issue.

Also, today I read the weirdest short-story ever. A man slithered his way through the city to walk in on his wife cheating on him, but he confuses the way in the middle of his slithering (Because he decides that arriving home will be much more rewarding if he moves using nothing but vertebral column-originated spasms) and ends up in the house of an androgynous character who wants to have sex with him (At least his/her female half wants to). But then he gets rescued by a guy who threw a shoe into the house, and slithers his way out of there. Then, he arrives, but his wife seems to be bloating, and there's a bearded person in the bed, and... Well, I didn't really get what the hell happened after that. It was weird stuff.

Rugby, you've never had to deal with FEMA.

I used to live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

FEMA has been ineffective and wasteful since day one. If you lost everything you own, FEMA would ask for ID to prove you're really you. It's ridiculous. Changing the director never changes anything.

On the other hand, it's good that the coast gaurd is in control, since they actually have some sort of background as far as relief and resue go.

Let's not pretend we're innocent folks. Do you know why when a celebrity goes for body gaurds it's usually a huge black guy? There are huge guys of all races, it's becasue huge black guys scare us most.

See, selective and timed reference I can deal with. That can be quite funny. The Rick James thing just pissed me off because everybody thought it was so hilarious to say it 50 times a day for no reason at all.

Anyway, as for Chappelle and free speech, here's a chunk from the interview that I decided to pick out.

"To each his own," says Chappelle. "I look at it like that word, 'n-----', used to be a word of oppression. But that when I say it, it feels more like an act of freedom. For me to be able to say that unapologetically on television."

But how would he react if a white comedian used the "N" word?

"I'd be furious," says Chappelle.

FUCK
THAT

This guy became rich and lives on a huge estate because freedom of speech allows him to use the "n" word on cable television, yet he'd be furious just because a white comedian used it? That seems fairly discriminatory to me.

Know who managed to pull it off? George Carlin. While I'm not a huge fan of most of his comedy, what I will give him is that he's very good at preparing his audience for something before they hear it if need be. When he did the bit on that word, it was perfectly executed, and everyone understood how no malice is no foul.

Unfortunately, people like Dave Chappelle don't seem to think that way, and think that they should exploit their race for financial gain.

Free speech is one of the most important things you could think of in comedy. For someone who's made such huge heaping piles of money on free speech, it's absolutely despicable for him to so blatantly step on it because of his prejudice.

I don't ask you to agree with me about Chappelle, but I do ask that you understand why I dislike him so much. That's all.

Here's the interview, by the way. Guess where he was telling these things to the reporter? On his 65-acre estate that he lives on.

I agree. I think that when some black people say "that's our word we can say it you can't", that defeats the point of ever saying it. If you're still offended when someone uses it, then why use it yourself? It's like me saying "I can say cracka but you can't because I'm white and I feel liberated when calling myself and fellow people of my race racial epithets!" It's just skewed logic.

Shrike, shoudl we start a thread for this discussion? Anyways here is a portion of a post from a firefighter/EMS message board.

I believe that Harve is correct. Having been in this field, as an Emergency Management Coordinator, I know how flustered things can be for a simple flood or storm event.

However, the State Governors have to declare a state of emergency through their State Emergency Management Agency and this agency does the contacting of the Fed’s, and ask for help from FEMA, before FEMA can put the wheels in motion and go to their aid. It is not automatic, when a storm is approaching.

Having a major hurricane bear down on you are and after being told by the Mayor of New Orleans, that “This is no DRILL, but THE REAL DEAL”! He ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city. They were told to leave. Some did but others didn’t. Knowing how this area is laid out, this was going to be a hardship on all involved. Not knowing that the levies were not to hold and crumble, provided a great flood to an already devastated area. With the electricity out, streets flooded and the water supply system down, the living conditions are horrible at best. Any one who would go to a shelter and think that they are going to be Omni, were sadly mistaken. Shelters are not fun for any one.

The FEMA is and the Homeland Security Agency is being run (or ruined) at the time being by bureaucrats. Most know absolute nothing about emergency operations or response. It is really time for heads to roll and people who are in these comfortable positions to depart the offices that they are holding. Get tough on the Mr. President!!

The discussion can be found here.

Ive read through a couple of pages on that and the two things I hear the most are the organization level of FEMA and at this scene isnt going well, and that the state dropped the ball just as much as FEMA if not more yet are recieving no blame. But whoever is organizing it (now its teh ocast Guard) ther eis alot of re-organizing and remobilizing to do. Hundreds if not thousands of very valuable personal (medics, search and rescue and specialty units in the military) are sitting watching this unfold on TV, waiting for the call to come help after egistering for assiting.

There needs to be reorganization at local, state and Federal levels of all departments involved, not just FEMA.

I really think this hsoudl be a seperate topic, not in here.

State blocks Red Cross from delievering relief supplies. The state, not FEMA. Sure theya re a burecratic entity, just like every other government agency and have to jump through hoops and run into red tape. The law needs to be changed, not so much FEMA itself, although it too needs work. but changing the law is the best thing they can do if they do only one thing.

Well, I was reading today that New Orleans and the state have one of the worst records in the country of corruption. But as for the FEMA thing, we all know this director (who was put in there because of his cronyist ties to Bush) is falling on his sword to make sure that there's a face to put the blame for this monumental fuck up on that isn't Bush. Now, that's not me saying that you can just blame it all on Bush, I don't think you can blame it on any ONE person, it's a variety of people and agencies fucking off and being asleep at the switch that caused this. I'm just saying that in a lot of cases, and especially with the attention turning lately to "why was the White House so slow to respond?" this is a quick and easy way for Bush to try and hold somebody else's ass out to the media wolfpack to chew on on for awhile.

I'll reserve all future comments for a forthcoming thread : )
