I got my dad a gallon of Mayfield's Butter Pecan ice cream for Father's Day... I just couldn't think of anything else to get the man, he has damn near everything he could need, and I didn't want to fall into that trap of getting him a goofy father's day gift either. Anyone else here having that problem?

I have posted my consideration of my brothers reinesance theme wedding in the past but now things have reached a new level of insanity. My father is running the music for the wedding.
A short background of my father. A 61 year old blind man who once dreamed of being a disk jockey and listens to three things, teen crap from when he was young, teen crap from now and celeine dion. As I was growing up he played oldies all the time, which is cool in that it gave me a respect for diffrences in music and possibly a sence of what true rock and roll should be. That was then, this is now.
We were discussing music for him to bring to the wedding and he asked if I had that song by that guy. He stopped at that as if it were actual information. He later went on to say "That guy, his mom was on the jeffersons" That would be Lenny Kravitz. It seemed an unusual choice for him but the man has love songs so I suspended disbeleif "You know, he does that song. She's so high above me, like cleopatra and joan of arc and aphrodite." That would be Tal Buckman, a 90's one hit wonder who sounds nothing fucking like Lenny Kravitz. He said that this would work as those listed women were from the reinesance. A glance at the names along with a 4th grade education shouldmake it clear they are not
After this he said that "That areosmith song would be good." I indicated to him how areosmith was a very good group and had many songs. He said " No, this is recent." They have had recent albums and songs which I like more than most seem to. He went on to explain "No, this is that recent one, like from the 90's. It was in that movie and written by someone else." That would be I don't want to miss a thing, a song that I like which is probibly being played in at least 20,000 weddings at this very moment.
Yes, he considers this recent. Allow me to give you an image of the reality this man lives in. This is a man who whenever he heard me instant messeging would ask where the person I was "chattin" with was from. He would then make impressed sounds as he is amazed that have computers in diffrent places. In putting music together for the wedding he ask if it was "easy to take a whole bunch of diffrent songs, from diffrent albums and put them on one album." While that can at least be explained by a lack of technical saavy, something I can understand fully. I know little about my car beyond that turning the key makes it go. The true naivite of the man comes into play when I have to explain to him that hot and horny coeds were not actually trying to e-mail him. He said that they must be, as they were saying hello to him by name. Yes I know I'm ranting, but I have a right to as he just asked if I have "hold my hand" because he wants to "bring some hootie."

I got my daddy--
nuttin'.

I seriously don't know what he wants. Doesn't wear ties. He doesn't like clothes. Don't use gift cards or certificates. Doesn't want money...

I got him a huge thing of phone cards last year-- he used them to call his family in Mexico, and he was happy with that.

But this year, I can't get anything "different". Women are easier to shop. I know how to play in my mother and sisters emotions, but my father-- he's like me. Takes real effort to make something extra special.

But I will take him out to his favorite restaurant.

My dad doesn't hunt. Neither do I.
Although he has a great sense of personality-- perhaps a Super Soaker?

Rant on my friend... I think everyone here understands your situation pretty well.

This I can sympathize with you on. My sisters and mother are the easiest people to shop for, just get them some bath items (designer soaps and aromatherapy type stuff) and they go nutts. My Dad on the other hand...

He actually liked the Butter Pecan ice cream though. I think it made his day. :-)

But I will take him out to his favorite restaurant.

That works.

Bingo. I never get anything. He usually buys himself something. Made a $100 purchase on a bunch of Sonic Youth merchandise a week or two ago, I'm counting that. And for my birthday, I just swiped a credit card and made some purchases. Works a lot better than doing the whole "gift" thing.

My dad has an unhealthy obsession with flashlights. I once tried counting the number of flashlights we had in the house, and gave up after 35. Anyway, for Father's Day, I bought him one that clips on your ear. There's no point in me buying those miner's hat-style headbands, because he already has three.
