French fries get new name in House restaurants
By JIM ABRAMS
ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON, March 11 — House cafeterias will be serving fries with a side order of patriotism Tuesday with a decision by GOP lawmakers to replace the "French" cuisine with "freedom fries."
"This action today is a small but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure of many on Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France," said Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Administration Committee.

Agreed. I think there would be better ways for people to show their dissatisfaction than that.

Oh that's real mature. Why not have some African American Milk and Un-Oppressed Jew Waffles?
Jesus, France is just getting everything bad.

I just so happen to be currently reading this book...
"The French in French fries does not necessarily mean that they were a French invention (though they may have been). To French originally meant merely to cut into strips or slices. Strips of tenderloin beef, for example, were said to be Frenched."
Bryson, Bill. Made in America: An Informal History of the English Language in the United States. New York: HarperCollins, 1994.

The whole thing seems like a stupid idea espescially because i think they would like it more than they dislike it. First of all the fact that we would care so much about something so futile just proves what the france have been saying all along, stupid americans. second of all the french, being known most for thier fancy food, probably hate to have a food so "crappy" being named after them. Finally it jsut spurrs on the idea that americans are fat slobs that we would care so much about the name of our precious food, and French fries were originally made in Belgium

I just noticed that you lay out all your speeches in that classic 8th grade Point One, Point Two, Point Three, Conclusion layout. It would make sense if you ever had a valid point in your short history here.

It sounds like a good idea to me. After all, French fries and French toast aren't even really French.
We did something like this during World War II. The name of any food with a German name was changed. Sauerkraut became "liberty cabbage", hamburgers became "liberty sandwiches", etc.

And to clarify: French toast is from Belgium, and French fries are from Britain.

Gee. i dont know why. why France want to be total against USA?
Isn't it to be Russia or China going all out against US. you know travelling to all sort of countries to ask them to vote in favour of against US.
or is it because Putin knows that former communist rogue empire is often unable to attract ppl to stand on his side.
All along i thought France are always on the side on British. u know world war 1 and 2. British are always helping France except the France revolution.

France and England have been at odds for centuries. Even during the World War they were only allies on paper. I'm pretty sure if you ask an Englishman his opinion of the French, it won't be too flattering.
One order of Freedom Toast, please. The problem with Freedom Toast is that, without the French, it loses its meaning. Someone could be wanting toast and get Freedom Toast. Odd stuff.

It's very sad when my country tries to marginalize a valuable democratic ally just because it shares a different view on war with Iraq.

When you look at it, and not to incite a flame war, but the United States Senate and House of Reps is about the maturity level of a bunch of sixth graders making fun of the odd kid. Eventually the media will start attacking the "Freedom Fries" and things will go back to normal. Don't expect McDonalds to change, though. I had a conversation with a manager at a McDonalds earlier and he nearly laughed me out of the store.

i remember reading something like this in TIME a couple weeks ago where restaurants around that country were naming french fries "freedom" fries etc. and IHOP, which introduced it's stuffed french toast not too long ago, doesn't seemed to be too affected by its name since it's one of the most popular items on the menu. cheese seems to have taken a hit in sales though.

euhm frecnh fries are from BELGIUM NOT FROM BRITAIN.
MORONS. and trust me ... i know
what french toast is i dunno
re:Anti-corruption
LOL
ok they where allies in WWI BUT NOT in WWII France during WWII was the vichy-regime which collaborated with the germans. the only french allied to the british and the americans during WWII where the renegades. the rivalry between england and France dates back from William the conqueror. he was a vazal of the king of france but conquered england. After that the two families querelled to gain the power over britain and france.

probably the wrong topic for me to say this, but...
that's entirely the point. france want to avoid anyone going all out. so you're bemused why france are so against the US? flip it around, france are bemused as to why america is so against iraq. oh yeah, weapons of mass destruction. but hey, what about the inspections? why not let them run their course? america has offered no legitimate answer to this. hence france's position against war.

The French are against war becuase they are protecting their own business interests in Iraq. All of that oil they have contracts for? What good would it be if Hussein gets overthrown and things start changing? Yeah. France isn't the innocent righteous nation they like to portray themselves as.
