Excellent idea. Usernames with hyphens or underscores at the beginnings and/or ends looks incredibly stupid. Next we should get rid of usernames with the letter "X" at the beginning and/or end of their names.

Don't people know that putting an "X" or multiple "X's" at the beggining or end of an alias means that you're emo? Seriously.

The underscore is the real killer... If we only had to remove leading and trailing dashes, this would be much easier. :)

I miss the underscore =(.

Yea, so do I. I feel like a dick with the shitty hypen. It felt ghetto with the underscore.
This bites ass.

Possibly the most petty rule ever.

What harm does having one underscore to seperate two words do?

Nothing at present, but that's not the issue. You guys are all saying, "Well, I don't see what good it does". This isn't about the now, it's about the future and what these changes mean with respect to what we'll be doing in the future that's important. Just because you can't throw a best guess as to why these name restrictions are being put into practice, doesn't make the reason for making the restrictions invalid...

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 16:38:35

Okay Tom. Even though I already knew that, one guy was complaining about that this morning at Flash forum.

Tom and any other admin can change your name at any time they want, dumbass.
This isn't like a thread where someone says "you cant post unless you have 1000 posts", this is real, they'll change your name if you don't do it/ask for it to be changed(if someone inactive already has the name you want).

Would this at all be possible in the future, I don't know if it's possible but I posted it a little earlier in the thread:

Like after 3 months if the person doesn't sign in they're listed as inactive. Or, if they are inactive after a year, they lose the rights to their name and it's up for grab and their name is replaced with a number starting at 0000001 and then so on and so fourth. It would be alot of work but I think it would be awesome to see all the actual active members there are on NG and not just alts and inactives.
