United Kingdom isn't a country. Its the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland.

And Great Britain isn't a Country either its three countrys. England, Scotland and wales.

Having lived in Canada for most of my life, I can say with absolute confidence that no Canadian has ever referred to themselves as American, nor have they ever referred to their country as America, nor do they get the two confused with one another. I'm sure this is mostly due to Canada trying to disassociate itself from the US.

But I can only assume the same for other countries in North and South America. I mean, you say that their are people out there who get confused by this, but I'm sure that for everybody who does, there's probably twice as many who don't.

Besides, the title of United States of America has already been well established to all of it's citizens. Nobody is gonna call it otherwise, even for the sake of correctiveness.

We obviously have an offical name it is the United States of America, no one is confused when you say america, it is understood to mean U.S.A.

If they mean some other "American" country an explaination of what country is provided a name is always given

So yeah its true some get lazy and just say America or those arrogant F#c@kers, but it is still understood to be The United States of America

And thats good enough for me

Yes and in addition to those 'arrogant F#c@kers' hundreds of millions, possible billions of people around the world use the term "American" to describe US citizens and only US citizens. And "America" to describe the US and only the US.

Now do you think that all those people call me and my compatriots 'Americans' just because we called ourselves Americans amongst ourselves for going on 3 centuries? Or do you think the source of the nomenclature mishap was by non-'Americans' looking for a quick and easy word to describe my country?

I remeber starting this post, and all I wanted to know was why America hasn't got a real name. I said Everyone calls Americans americans, an the USA america. But atually it could mean anyone from north or south america because there also on american continent.

But it's real name is Mexico.

But the US's real name is the united states of AMerica, why doesn't it have a real name as well.

Most country names are names of there own, Like england scotland france, canada,mexico etc.

AMerica on the othe hand is The United states of America.

Well the official name of the United states of america is the United states of America, and currently no other country holds the same name even though the name may have some things about true about the said country its not the same as the official name. Mexico is mexico not the U.S.A, its like saying U.S Celluar could be any other cellular phone company in the Us. because the name is somewhat vauge if you look at it like a fact rather than a title.

When the name United States of America was first applied, they didn't need any specific name, like Canada or such, because each state already had a name. It began as a VERY loose confederation of states. The best example today would be like the EU. If the EU were to becoem one nation 100 years from now, they would have the same name issue. Each state was where people alleigiance lay. If you were from Virginia, you were a "Virginian," not an "American."

It wasn't until the 1860's that the United states truly became one United Country, though it was heading in that direction before. And by then, the country had existed for 90 years, and I guess, changing the name did not fit.

But think about it, he has quite a point there no matter how arrogant it sounds. The US makes more money than all the other countries in North, Central and South America combined times 2. The US is also the biggest trader in the Americas, the biggest political supporter, the most well known, the one with the most cultural influence, and the only country in the region to be a UN security council member.. If a country like the US was located anywhere in the world, the surrounding less significant countries would be associated with it or disregarded completely as well. Thats just how it works.

Now look what is happening with the EU. People tend to call the EU community "Europe" instead of "the European Union". There are many countries who belong to Europe but aren't members of the EU so they are being disregarded because the EU is politically and economically more significant.

Maybe 100 years from now the EU will be more unified and the Swiss will be saying "Why do they call the European Union just 'Europe'? Why don't they have a real name like Switzerland? We belong to Europe too why do they have a monopoly on our continent? Those damn EU citizens and their arrogance!!! "
