No.. a club for sprites.. Which I wish to join. I, sadly, am but a fresh face in this world of flash, and the sub world of the sprites, but I still wish to call myself a member of this club.

My E-mail, for your (or anyone elses, if you don't have the time) note of acceptance/rejection, whichever the case may be.

Guys, has anyone by the name of PowerPrower put a request for a sprite sheet of the character Drakeman here? Cuz if he has, I'm here to check the progress of how it's going. I want those sprites ASAP for my webcomic, considering Drakeman is my character and I need him for authoer appearances etc. I want sprites of him in Megaman style or Dragonball Z Supersonic Warriors style. No matter what style you do first, I want poses for Kamehameha, Spirit Bomb, fighting/high speed fighting, etc. For those of you who have forgotten what my character looks like, here's a pic.

Sorry if it's all on such short notice, but I do need these in a hurry. I'll check back tommorow to see the progress.

Why, yes! Yes it is! I was trying to get it changed to the "Coke Club", but then there was this misunderstanding with the DEA and they wire tapped some of our members' phones, a few members went missing and then they just barged in here demanding we give up our supplier. Once we cleared the air, they agreed to leave us alone as long as they could rough someone up a bit. We sent them to your house, if that's okay. We hope you don't mind.

HOW THE HELL ARE YA, TWEEKIT?! It's great to find you back here, man! How have things been goin'? What have you been up to? Will you be back here regularly? How do magnets work? Seriously, give us a really long post and fill us in on the world o' Tweekit. Again, it's good to find you back here. :D

Welcome aboard! Whether you're a novice or a veteran in either discipline, as long as you're a positive member in our club, you're always welcome. Hopefully we can help teach you a few things to get you going.

Nope. This is the first we're hearing of it.

That's a pretty tall order. Personally speaking, I don't have the time to work on it. Hopefully, someone else here can help you out. I wish you the best of luck on your comic.

A money wrench, unlike a monkey wrench, ignites the system it's interrupting with pure gold.
I'm afraid I don't feel for you DM.

It's been pretty decent, if I do say so myself. Approaching my final year of hich school, I'm writing reviews and articles on a fairly regular basis, and I'm laying the groundwork for a webcomic I should have off the ground by the summer.
Magnet's, however, operate through witchcraft and a general hate for all that we hold dear. Don't get me started on the bastards.

If you'd like me to expand on the aforementioned, here it is.
Final year of school is approaching, and I could not be more pleased with that. School's become somewhat less of a chore for me, and more of a tool for honing my work ethic. I'm pursuing my interests in the videogame industry, be it as a creative member of a design team or a writer that plays a role in the direction of story and character development. Other appealing options include freelance game journalism, creative writing, or, if feasible, making a living off of a webcomic.
Pursuing my interests at this point!
Other then that, taking it easy and wrting on the most casual of basis'. I have intentions of becoming a regular contributor to various sites within the next month or so, and that should be an enlightening experience.
Also, making penis jokes and the like with cartoon characters, which, as we all know, is on par with charity work in the eyes of the enlightened.

Other then that, videogames, reading, and general fun have occupied the last... what? Year and a half? Yeesh. Oh, I also held some delightfully mundane retail jobs for a while, working for EB just over half a year. That's an entirely different story on it's own.

You can expect some posts from me on a casual basis from now on, while I do retain an interest in the lovely ol' pixel, other things are keeping me busy. Playoff season too, you know how it is ;-).

Should you be interested, comic art!

A boring one, I'm afraid. Part of an English project, and I'm afraid anything involving the genitalia and/or a fart tends to draw a disapproving eyebrow or two in regard to my mark.
I assure you, the writing on other strips is far more inspired. And he should be holding a controller, but the correct version is in the depths of my hard drive. A terrifying pit indeed.

Money wrench? Did I write "money wrench"? I suppose I did. Color me embarrassed! What I meant to say was "money wench". Every time I get into a routine, a money wench jumps in screaming, "Take me shopping! Take me to dinner! I wanna go to Miami!" Damned money wenches! They drain one of time and ... well ... money!

That's great to know. Can your writing be found anywhere or has it all been practice? Please be sure to post a link here when your comic launches.

Excellent way to view it! At least you'll be ahead of the game once you graduate ... unless that game is Bridge ... then you're on your own.

I know you're still in high school, but have you put out inquiries yet as to what different companies may be offering and what they're looking for in a potential employee?

I have intentions of becoming a regular contributor to various sites within the next month or so ...

Be sure to supply us with links.

Ah, the world o' retail! I HATE bumper stickers, but it's because of working retail I was compelled to buy a "Mean People Suck" bumper sticker and cut the "Mean" off. My wife still shakes her head at that.

You can expect some posts from me on a casual basis from now on ...

Glad to know that.

Ah, but you are quite the subversive comic author! I like how you cleverly "hide" the controller off-panel as if to flip the establishment the finger and insist on having at least a mute penis joke in your strip for those who can really appreciate true art ... or not ...

Your not the first person to notice that ;-). The controller I had originally looked more likea chunk of granite then a video gaming perheprial (sp), so you can see why the edit was necessary.

You don't need a lawyer. Visit the U.S. Copyright Office on the Web and all the info you need to register your intellectual properties is there. For the nominal fee of $30, you can do it yourself. I hope this helps!

I wonder what site thats on? It sounds like a good idea but that $30.00 fee sounds hell of alot better than that arround $80.00 start up kit thing. If you can get me a link, I might check it out and see if im able to. I also have to read there terms and such. Thanks, that was helpful.

Good to hear you're making progress. I would imagine outside backgrounds are difficult because of all the shading that's involved in making trees and grass look full. Flat colors would only make the background look ... well ... flat. Best o' luck on that, amigo.

That's really not a bad recolor. I've found that a lot of people forget to work in the highlights and shading colors when recoloring a sprite which winds up as a very flat piece. You've got the right mix of colors working here. Do you also customize sprites beyond simply recoloring them? If you do, feel free to post 'em here. Post more recolors if you have them too.

Very cool! Could you post a piece of your artwork here so we can check your stuff out?

Im not an animator however, but I would like to be one.

Awesome! I suggest you learn the basics of traditional animation first before going onto Flash or some other digital media. While school is good because you can pick the teacher's brain, I always highly recommend two books to anyone wishing to become a serious animator. The first is Cartoon Animation by Preston Blair. How to Draw Cartoon Animation (ISBN 0-929261-51-8), also by Blair, has been my animation bible since about age 7, but I've recently discovered it's hard to find. I understand that Cartoon Animation contains all of that information within its covers so it hasn't been lost, it's only been repackaged. The second book is The Animator's Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles, and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion, and Internet Animators which was suggested to me by a friend a few years ago. It has info on just about everything related to animation.

I wonder what site [U.S. Copyright Office is] on? If you can get me a link, I might check it out and see if im able to. I also have to read there terms and such.

On the NG BBS, when something is highlighted in yellow, it means it's a link to something else on the Web. If you go back to my original post, you'll find that the U.S. Copyright Office is written in yellow meaning it's a link that will take you to that site. According to your NG profile, seeing as you currently reside in Virginia, going through the U.S. Copyright Office is the only way you can officially copy protect your intellectual properties. You may hear about the “poor man’s copyright” which is when someone posts a copy of their work to themselves and leaves it unopened. The idea is that the unopened envelope containing your work is dated by the post office and therefore proves your idea was created on such a date, but according to the U.S. Copyright Office, "There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration." Any "business" offering to copyright your ideas for a cheaper fee than the $30 through the proper channels is looking to cheat you out of something. Anyone offering to do it for more is simply a crook. The info on the U.S. Copyright Office site covers a lot more ground. I hope this helps.

Very difficult to find or make grass that looks normal.

Anyway I'm gonna try and have all the hallways done by tomorrow, then I can start on the side and front of the school.

The shading shouldn't be to hard, but I'm rather worried about the landscaping.

Hey Doc, question lol

Do you need to contact the copyright office to copyright somthing?

Say I want to protect my characters, places, and just the whole story of my VHM comic that I'm working on. Now would I have to actually contact the copyright office to get it copyrighted? Or can just say it's rademarked and copyrighted?

And if I do have to contact the offices, what exactly do you file comic character and stories under? =/

I tried going to the site itself that you had linked, but well ether i'm just insainly stupid (Which is a very good possibility lol) or they aren't saying what it would have to be under lol

If you reside in the United States, yes. If not, you'll have to look into the laws of your own country.

Say I want to protect my characters, places, and just the whole story of my VHM comic that I'm working on. Now would I have to actually contact the copyright office to get it copyrighted?

Yes. That will be your safety net if there's a dispute. Now, that's not to say that someone hasn't already gotten the copyrights to a very similar idea. The U.S. Copyright Office will not check that for you. You'll have to do your homework before trying to get the copyrights to something. For example, say I never heard of Superman and create an incredibly similar character in every aspect called Señor Awesome and send it into the copyright office. For all intents and purposes, I can get the copyrights to that character, but if the owners of Superman dispute my claim and try to sue me, they very well could because their copyright predates mine.

... can [I] just say it's rademarked and copyrighted?

I can "say" I'm the strongest man in the world, but that doesn't necessarily make it true. ;) If you have something officially registered through the U.S. Copyright Office, you have a better leg to stand on, as long as the idea is unique, if someone tries to steal your idea or argue that you stole theirs. Trademarks are a totally different and more expensive animal.

... if I do have to contact the offices, what exactly do you file comic character and stories under?

This link covers cartoons and comic strips. Read it thoroughly.

I tried going to the site itself that you had linked, but well ether i'm just insainly stupid ... or they aren't saying what it would have to be under

It may help if you have your eyes open next time you go to the site. XD Just joking. I'd be lying if I said I never brain-farted like that myself. Seriously though, right on their home page, there's a heading that reads, "How to Register a Work". Comic strips are considered foremost to be a "Visual Art", so that's what you would click on first for the info. Be sure to thoroughly read the information on the page.

I am not, by any means, the end all, be all of copyright law and practices, so please don't take anything I say as rote. Go to the U.S. Copyright Office web site and check out the information for yourself; you may interpret it differently than I. Their FAQ's are helpful as well as the other information you'll find there. They also provide contact information if you have any questions they may not cover on the site.

I'm not 100% sure how your comic strip would be received because, technically, you're using already established sprite designs as your basis for customization. That could possibly be a copyright violation. What I suggest you do, should you feel you could copyright your material without repercussions, is send in drawings of your character designs that have nothing to do with the sprites, much like the drawings you posted here. Be sure to clearly label who each character is. Best of luck with that!

Oh I just what the characters themselves, and the storyline or whtever you call it copyrighted. Not the design, I can draw them anyway so there still mine even if there main use is Megaman sprites.

My sheezy art page covers that. Its just right in my sig message, just click the lower one.

That sounds useful. Dont they sell those in Barnes & Noble or Waldenbooks?

I wonder what site [U.S. Copyright Office is] on?

Well, I mainly need copyrights for characters, not for comics and stories just yet but that was helpful. Thanks DocMonster.

It's as good an excuse as any, but then what excuse does that leave me with ... old age? Damn it! XD

Your stuff isn't too shabby. It's very imaginative the way you've mixed characters from other properties with the world of Pokémon. The weapons are some great ideas and the Ivo Robotnik in the Captain Stubing-type jacket is hilarious! Well done!

Dont they sell those [art and aniimation books] in Barnes & Noble or Waldenbooks?

Yes they do. For the most part, I include links to Amazon since they're usually good at posting pictures of the items I'm talking about.

The U.S. Copyright Office covers that as well. Being the official government office for all U.S. copyright law, it's the only place to get copyrights for anything and everything that one could possibly get copyrights for.

Thanks DocMonster.

Any time. Glad I could help. :)

Sorry to say, since I've never tried to make sprite grass, I have no ideas on how to go about it, but I will post four background pics here, of varying degrees of detail, that will hopefully help you in deciding what you may need to do for your strip.

This first one is flat, but the shading gives it some depth. This may be a bit too flat for your needs.

This background plate may be the easiest to reproduce out of them all. They give a bit of life to the grass by placing a highlight color at the top of the grass while also randomly placing highlight pixels amidst the base color. You may also add depth by dropping in a few random pixels of the shade color as well.
