well, i dont know what to call it, but how do people make those cool gel like buttons and headers and stuff? is there a special technique or just shading or using linear and gradients or what?! i must know

You can still learn from it without the new filters in flash 8, just ignore putting the blurs in and think of another way to do it. For example for the heavy blur outline around the circle you could duplicate the main circle and move it around a bunch of times to create the border, like he does with the text.
