One of my favourite bands, although they'll probably get a lot more mainstream media attention now because they're about to release their first major label album.
Other relatively unknown bands/artists I like are - Atari Teenage Riot, Xiu Xiu, Regina Spektor, Frog Eyes, Beirut, Band of Horses, Animal Collective, The Slits, New Pornographers etc, etc blah blah blah. But none of them are particularly underground or anything.

Know one knows Universal Hall Pass, or Splashdown, and I adore them. A lot of my metal no one knows who arent metalheads, but metalheads always do, so I dont know if I should go there...

I don't really like ambiguous music. Alot of the bands I like are middle of the road, not in their musical style, but I mean they are probably the most famous in their genres.
ut there are a few that I don't think anyone knows (from my experience), such as Ayreon or Yazoo.

The reason no one gives a damn about aqua-bats its because they were the roots of Blink 182! Skindred are quite good, i cant listen to them too much though. His voice just starts to annoy me.
It seems most elctronica bands no one seems to know about, fischerspooner, Ladytron, Ladyfuzz. Then English post-punk bands are not very well recognized either; Bratmobile & Camera Obsucura.

I would say Hi Standard. Good rock band that uses Engrish lyrics. Pretty sure most people don't know about them, but try them out.

Metallica? You possibly don't get anymore mainstream then Metallica... Megadeth and Motorhead are pretty well-known around Metalheads...
You fail. As for me, I suppose, Iced Earth has a pretty strong fanbase, but even most Metalheads seem to ignore them.
I'd also have to say Blue Cheer, The Misfits, The Stooges, The MC5, ect, ect.

I've heard of probably 70% of the metal bands in this thread. I thought you were talking about actually unknown bands.
Like Nazgul. I've recommended them to a few NGers.
