Edit envelope help

In the envelope for editting your sounds, is there a way to cut out sounds for good? Like removing a segement of the audio piece to shorten its length and I don't mean just fade it out, I want it gone!

When you say an envelope what do you mean by an envelope what program are you using to do this sort of thing?
normally you just select the part you don't want and delete it...

'envelope' is the posh name for the graph of volume in decibels over time.
