The crime rates are on the run. It's insane how many people are forced to commit crimes because for them it's the only way to survive. I want this topic to be a discussion about what could be efficient ways to reduce crime. I don't know a lot about it myself. But I'd like to see ideas here.

There is no effective way of reducing crime, seeing as by eliminating the "crime enducing elements" by doing things such as; changing laws related to firearms, strengthening law enforcement, or increasing the strength of the penalties for criminals you're only going to create more of a compression factor, which lead to the magnitude of even the pettiest of crimes only becoming greater as to evade the fancy new laws or factors that were put there to reduce those exact same crimes.

Here's an interesting question: which is more important when it comes to crime, the punishment or rehibilitation?

Also, people who molest little boys should be punished by castration.

Fat Tony from "The Simpsons" on crime:
"Is it wrong to steal bread to feed your family? Well, what if your family doesn't like bread? What if they like cigarrettes? And what if you're not giving it to them but rather selling it to them for so little, it's almost giving it to them? Is that wrong?"

We need to fight poverty, in order to fight crime. I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Most crimes are comitted by people who live poverty. It isn't that these people are bad, it's just the only way they can make money. Of course, the rich have to much power, allowing them to easilly escape the legal system.

Yes, because thinking that to limit crime we need to tackle social and/or economic problems such as poverty is socialist or communistic.

What? =| Now people are blaming video games for crime? WTF! Not once have I even thought it would be a good idea to flag down a car, smash the drivers head off the dashboard, drag them out, kick them while thier down and speed off in thier car after playing GTA. People who do that kind of thing have mental problems, it's not the game thats the problem in that situation its the gamer.

crime cant be prevented because good and evil is subjective.. as long as there are humans there is crime because not everyone will get to like each other.. enough with the bullshit "men can coexist in harmony".. if there is only one unit of a certain commodity, everyone will fight for it, but only one will get to have it (sharing aside).. we can't all be on top.. and the fact of the matter is everyone wants to be on top whether we admit it or not..

In terms of petty crimes, I don't think there really is a way, although against major organized crimes(Which is pretty close to non existent in US and France and England and such), look at the Mafia in New York(Joe Massino the Mafia Boss was convicted for crimes in the 80s earlier last year, I believe it was last year at least). To reduce that we need to not tax gambling, legalize prostitution and legalize drugs, then no more drug dealers/traffickers and no more pimps and gambling rackets and/or illegal rackets for these activities. However, do we really want that legalized? As for gambling, the government most likely won't let taxes go, and Utah the mormanist state isn't going to allow it all together I would assume. As for petty crimes, nothing really, unless everyone suddenly becomes rich.

Ways to reduce crime huh?
I only can give reasons as to why is there crime but not very good ones.
1-Revenge
2-Pleasure(usually self-gratification)

I highly doubt you can eliminate crime completely only decrease it. The posts above said more than I did.

It's higher. The unemployment rate is high as well.

In England its because not enough criminals going to prison. Sentences arn't strict enough. In America Were the law is much stricter than in Britain and more people who commit crimes atually are locked up. The crime rate is alot lower than it is in Britain.
Scotland has the highest Murder rate in the developed world and England and wales have the highest crime rate.

Because we don't have enough prisons

I thought someone was going to say that. Historically crimerates just go down as long as nothing huge like a revolution comes along and messes everything up.
