What's an Emo?

Ok. It's been longer than I want to think about since /I was in High School. #0 year olds are "kids," to me and I'm not the kind of guy who hangs around schoolyards.

Consequently, I miss a lot. So what is this whole Emo thing about? I guess it might have something to do wih Emo Phillips, a comic from the '90's whose shows were a celebration of Lameness. But how does that translate into a subculture?

Are they neo hippies? Stoners? Goth wannabe's? A subclass of nerd? Fashion slackers? I realize I'm copping to felony fogeyism here, but it seems to b an important issue at NG and knowing would be useful in evaluating a lot of the pieces here.

It's a lot easier to review humorous pieces if you know what's being made fun of.

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle

So what we're looking at is Goths without poise. Sort of a slacker version. Marilyn Manson trying to be Alice Cooper. I can see why people make fun of them.

Goths themselves I don't have a problem with. Under the white makeup and black lip gloss, they tend to be very clean and polite. Intelligent, but a bit high strung. Or maybe I just make them nervous.

Picture a fatter, NC 17 version of Merlin from "The Seord in the Stone," and you've got a good idea of what I'm like on a gig.
