Consider the title under this topic is "My 15-year-old cousin is a stripper".Probably just a spelling mistkake if people can fit all that in.

Indeed. Excuse me. Now, do you have a meaning about the subject ?

Intelligence? Hmm....all I feel like saying about it is that it can be judged on a lot of different levels. I just judge people's intelligence by their sense of humor and friendly attitude usually. Grammar, luckily my dear boy, isn't too important. As long as I can understand you. But.... JuSt DonT TypE LikE ThiS CaUsE YoU ThiNk iTs KewL!!!....someone did that for a whole conversation. That is why I feel need to mention that. People that do that drive me batty sometimes.

I'm just trying to start one of few intelligent conversations on this forum. But actually, I'm talking about intelligence in general, across animal species, even alien intelligence versus ours, a definition of intelligence, points of arguement, etc.
E.g.: How we, as humans, look towards other animal species. Now, I've already spoken about this in the topic "So you think 13 yr olds are dumb?", but I don't mind giving an example again. Like: If you ask a human to give the solution to a mathematical problem, and he comes up with it by just thinking on his own, is he then intelligent? I think it's doubtable because a computer can solve the same mathematical problem maybe ten times faster then the human being, and with an even more accurate solution. But does this mean the computer is smarter then the human? No. Do we consider the computer intelligent? No again. But it did solve the problem.

Remarks like this one, that is what I would like to hear from others.

That doesn't mean diddle squat.

The computer cannot be involved in intelligence, as it is a machine created for a function. Intelligence is something that requires conciousness.

Therefore, the person in your example would have intelligence of math or mathematical knowledge.

BTW, YOU SHOULD HAVE STARTED BY TRYING TO DEFINE KNOWLEDGE! >:O

YOU CANNOT PONDER INTELLIGENCE UNTIL YOU HAVE PONDERED KNOWLEDGE.

I think I could define Intelligence as:
"The ability to use knowledge in relation to other knowledge to eventually obtain new knowledge." Correct me if you think I'm wrong.

I don't think that is wrong at all, I just think you should have started by defining knowledge. It's what they will ask you to do if you ever write a philosophy paper.

All right. Now, to go back for a moment to my example, aren't human beings also 'creatures built for a certain cause, a certain goal'? Only, we strive to seek that goal, and that on itself is a goal.

Well, intelligence IS you, in a sense. 'Your brain' is effectively you, your psyche, instincts, personality and memories are all simply running electrical signals. Pinning down one's thoughts and intellectual capacity to a set standard is impossible if you want it to be an accurate representation. See, I hate shows like 'Australia's Brainiest *insert whatever social category here* that rate people's intelligence via general knowledge.

General knowledge, in my mind, does NOT equal intelligence. At the risk of sounding arrogant, I think I can honestly say that I'm a moderately smart person. Yet, I know absolutely jack about geography (I get lost regularly in this relatively small town that I've lived in for 19 years), who past famous leaders are, etc, and I have little 'practical' knowledge (ie. How to 'cope' in the 'real world'). I believe that intelligence is more defined by one's logical reasoning, philosophies and ideals. But then, much of that is opinion, so an 'intelligent' view in one person's eyes may be 'really fucking stupid' in the eyes of another.

In a nutshell, intelligence is pretty much impossible to categorise in a literal, statistical sense. But it's obvious that some people are more psychologically developed than others. In the end though, it all comes down to how hard one's willing to work with the basic structure that their mind is created with via genetics, and how they choose to use it.

I fully agree. Knowledge does not equal intelligence, yet they do seem somehow connected. And yes, every living thing is intelligent. See, some people may say, for example: "Ants are not intelligent, they just follow a certain pattern over and over and over again." Well, then I think: we do too. Human beings just as well follow routines, like: they go to the bakery every morning, go to work and go to sleep. Then they get up the following morning, eat breakfast, and so on and so forth. Yet the other people may then reply: "Okay, but I still think about life, late at night, in my bed. And we have no proof ants do the same." -"Maybe not, but I can proof that an ant has someday had an idea of his own." -"Really? What is that idea, then?" -"To gather food for the first time."
- "...". If any animal we know of, or it's ancesters, once had the idea to hunt or gather for food, they would not live today.
I know, it's only a conformation, but I just though I could put it down here.

That's an assumption.

Really? If living things had no goal, then they would die, not? To say it simple, if animals weren't built to survive, they wouldn't stand here today.

Purely a concept, if you want to find out what things really mean, you have to take out all aspects of the knowledge and take us back to the primate times. Can you do that? Please :D

I'd define intelligence as the capacity to understand concepts/situations/problems and to apply/solve them.

At 8/18/06 06:50 AM, ZeroAsALimit wrote: The computer cannot be involved in intelligence, as it is a machine created for a function. Intelligence is something that requires conciousness.

Hum, I don't agree with that. Human brain is built on the same structure than a computer, it's only far more complex. Consciousness, unless you believe humans have souls, is merely the result of a huge "dynamic database" containing one's behaviors toward different situations. Because it is so vast and unique, it gives everyone a different way of reacting and "thinking" in every situations, which creates "consciousness". If a computer could be as developped as human brain, then there's no doubt it would have its own consciousness too, problem is it probably won't happen ever, it's far too complex.
