I was thinking of getting a PSP, mainly for the UMD movies and the web features, but on top of that i'm looking for some games, and I heard there aren't many. I have a DS but it's pretty much game only, so any owners can tell me if it's a buy or not?

The UMD Movies are a rip off big time, 29.99 for a movie on UMD 19.99 for a movie on DVD. Als the gameing and web surfing features are pretty nice. It is worth it, if I do say so my self. Also on a side not do not get the standard PSP Shell out 50 bucks more for the Gig adtion Same as the standard but you get a 1GB memory card instead of a 32MB one.

Why, hello... I am RKthrilla's alt.. Whats that you say.. No I will not dry hump you...

If newgrounds has a page about it... it must be worth getting

if you're one of those hi-tech people who like to have it all in one device, I'd say get it
bad news: the PSP manual doesn't tell you how to add pics or video (like where to save them in the PSP), so you'll have to figure that out for yourself (pics are in PSP/Photo, I don't know where videos go) also, the battery only lasts about 6 hrs without using the web browser.

as for games, if you're getting it for games, don't. of all of the games I have on it, only Infected, Lumines and Daxter are good (Mercury: decent puzzle game Monkey ball style, Untold Legends: mindless hack and slash; SW battle front 2 is decent)

and movies on UMD aren't around anymore. go for movie UMDs if you get a PSP and don't have a portible DVD player besides, the PSP has like a 8 in screen compared to a DVD player's 15 in.

overall, buy one if you're a super techie, but if it's for the games, just leave it alone

UMDs are the basic PSP format for games, movies, and the rare music video. they are like mini DVDs in cases and are easily breakable if not treated correctly (my Lumines disc is broken). they aren't bad, but aren't as good as something like DS carts. they can hold almost as much as a DVD can, so don't worry.

the web browser is like Internet Explorer and with the proper updates can play flash movies. it types like a cell phone would (you type with buttons that have letters like a cell phone would have). it can do everything a normal browser can except right click

UMD stands for Univerial Media Disk, which is made by sony and is only made by sony If the disk breaks the only way of it working again is to buy a new copy of game/movie. It fits into the PSP like a tape fits into a tape player. and the Web features I can not say too much about because I have never used them. Also see pic to get an idea of what an UMD is.

Well, the web feature you obviously connect it to a wireless connection, then you can set connection to select to quickly connect to, although the browser isnt that fast, think of a 500 mhz cpu with dialup. It works, though. On the UMD's, you can get some of the movies that arent recent release for 10-20 bucks, but they eat up the bettery, maybe you could watch 2 movies on it with 1 charge? The sound is good for movies, though.

If your gonna play lotsa games, then there'll be something great no matter what genre you like.

I use the PSP to hide porn. Everything else on it sucks, including the games.

I use my DS lite a LOT more. The games on it are so awesome!

I bought it the day it came out, played Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2, SSX on tour, Lumines, and Wipeout Pure. None of them other than SSX was above mediocre. I'm waiting for Metal Gear Portable Ops in hopes that it will be fun. After that I will probably sell mine.

The games are only so-so. I even use it more as an MP3 player than a game device.

PSP, as a multimedia tool, is a good deal. A lot of the UMD's are as much and upwards in price than their DVD counterpart, and usually have less to no features. Aside from that problem (which they should really take care of, say slashing the prices in half), it plays MPEG4 videos, music of various types, has fully functional internet (well, almost. No flash player above 6) and a big, bright screen. As for games, there's only about 4 or 5 really good ones, but this winter there will be some fantastic additions including Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, LocoRoco and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. All in all, PSP is pretty kickass. And, even though the UMD's are spendy, they're nice quality and definately more convenient than a portable DVD player. On top of that, when the PS3 comes out, you'll be able to put all the awesome PS1 games you want onto it. I recommend getting one.

I'm gonna have to say no. Unless you get a large memory card that costs more than the PSP itself it will end up being just like the DS.

Sure it has it's moments but how long does GTA: LCS last? I got bored of it after 2 weeks.

Get an ipod video instead.

Not much I can say that probably hasent already been said, but here it goes.

Short and kinda simple.
Gaming: Really bad. unless you like puzzle games.

Movies: WAAAAY too many, and most of them are the bad releases. a couple are good though, so Its good to bring on trips, and not as huge as a Laptop or portable DVD player.

Music: It was my MP3 Player for like a year, until I stopped carrying it around. it plays music really well and doesnt take up much room.

Internet: Mighty bad. Badly compatable with most sites, but as you might have noticed, some good things come from newgrounds for the PSP.

Durability: Dont drop it and your good to go. try not to fuck up the screen either.

Overall: If you like Movies, Puzzle games and an MP3 player all wrapped into one tiny portable object, buy it.
Oh yeah, UMD's are REALLY FUCKING DURABLE. you can duct tape the thing back together if it rips apart and it will still read it.

I was thinking Syphon Filter, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo, Tekken Dark Resurrection, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and Daxter. I guess the MGA's are good, but you've got to have a taste for that sort of thing. Ridge Racer and Wipeout Pure are also pretty good games.

Okay, now thats done. As you can see there, are some great games, if you require them to be portable. There is no title beyone lumines that you can't get in some form, for the PS2.

Do you have a PS2?
Do you desire a console, or a portable system?
Really, if you don't need it to be portable, you can get alot better system.

Be prepared to spend $600. System, case, warranty (ULTRA IMPORTANT!!!!), 4 games, headphones, 1 gb memory card. And viola, $600.

Throw out all notions of using it as a atletic media player. It is too heavy and too delicate to be used atletically.

Do you just want...
A game player?
DS does have alot of great titles.

A music player?
iPod nanos are sexy, and fun.

A movie player?
Get a portable dvd player, the limited selection of umds is frustrating and expensive.

A multimedia device?
Get a smartphone, palm treo 700 or motorola Q or any Blackberry.

The PSP does many things, but only does games well.

For games: Ds, hands down.

For Multimedia, music and hombrew: Psp - The homebrew scene can keep you happy for quite a while, also there are some decent games on the horizon (loco Roco, Every Extend, Lumines 2)
