'Selling out' is such a funny and indecisive term.
None of us are in the position to call them sell outs, we don't know half of what goes on in studios and in fancy music executive's offices.
And really, what would you do,
"Hello, here is a contract for $x million, but we get to have a say in what you do!"
"No thank you, I prefer to struggle through life with no real intention of taking the next step in my music career"
Because that's what the music industry is, it's a JOB, it's a CAREER, yes, the musicians must have talent and a love of music, but it's still a career, and in a career you accept promotions. You would be foolish not to.
Money DOES make the world go round.
And just because a band gets BIG and in demand does not mean they have sacrificed what got them this far and instead have given up all individuality. People say this about the new AFI, and even so far as A7x. Stupid music critics who have no idea what is really going on.
Also, to pertain something useful to the question posed in the topic, See You on the Other Side was GOOD, not like their usual stuff but it was still a good album that I actually physically bought. I wouldn't say they sold out, they were just trying something new, and hey it worked.
