Do You Believe?

The topic of the existence of God(s) has come up many times on the Forums. People constantly argue whether ours years of worship come to any avail, slinging insults to others beliefs in a never ending cycle. Generally in this society, most of us believe. I was just curios of the NG users that do believe and don't. Personally, I'm an athiest. So NG users, what are you?

Religion is tricky...I mean I want to belive in an afterlife..but I dont go to church wont probably unless some on dies or marries...I mean what if you go to church all your life and dont get anything for it?

I belive in some sort of Karma though..do good things and good things will happen.

I'm an atheist. Always have been. I just find it impossible to have faith in something I know is non-existent. Plus I don't have enough time to devote to church, which is a complete waste of my life anyway.

And i really did beleave in God when i was younger, but now its just something you want to beleave in when someone pulls out a gun near you.

It depends on how you define God. If you are speaking of God in the sense that it's a single being that controls everything that happens in the universe? Then no. I realized the flaw in this belief when I was in elementary school when I just thought "You know, if God is one person, then they must have been extremely lucky to be God."
Which means this: We come into existence when we're born. We can't control when this happens or who our parents are or anything like that. So, the fact that one person was able to come into being as something as powerful as God just seemed outrageous and too lucky. Am I making any sense?

I can't think of a good way to explain what I believe God is right now... maybe i'll post it later if I can come up with a good explanation.

i get what your saying, and i commend you for thinking (actually I had an almost identical philosiphy at one point) but right now god just seems like a cool fan fiction for a really lame story (life)

Thanks. It's a little hard to explain thought processes especially on something as complex as God with words.

As for life being lame, I abandoned that idea a year or two ago. The point of life is to experience joy, so you might as well just have fun. No use doing anything else. Life is what you make of it, and it doesn't do anyone any good to think it sucks.

Did you ever notice people only pray to God when they are afraid, or they want someone. God is probably asking why nobody prays just to say hi. People just believe in god because they are afraid of hell.

Don't worry... that's not Emo. Emos just want to kill themselves. And I felt the same way for awhile, and it wasn't like the worst thing ever. And if that works for you, then that's great.

Yeah, I think Heaven and Hell are bullshit. Even if you read the Bible, Jesus says that heaven exists here on Earth, not some weird place in the sky.
Really Heaven and Hell in the sense that most know them are nothing more than advertising techniques. Without a promise of eternal happiness if you accept the religion, or eternal torment if you do not, then noone would be motivated to do any good ol' worshipping.
