Israel has no choice in the matter. Considering their position as "invading foreigners" in the minds of Arabic countries, and their precarious position and strength while surrounded by enemies, Israel must act to head off increasing threats before they occur, and act swiftly when they attack.

The threat posed by Hezbollah, along with Syrian and Iranian troops assisting them, which has been building up in southern Lebanon unhindered for decades is too dangerous for Israel to allow. This is a life and death game for Israel as a country, and also as a unified people and religion.

America is fighting to eradicate an ideology which poses a significant threat to our safety because fanatics won't stay in the craphole which they created for themsleves. If Islamic Fundamentalists would just hate in their own little holes, America wouldn't be bothering them. However, terrorists have hit us at home and this is no longer a game that America can afford to just wait out.

With respect to Israel, both America and Britain are stuck supporting Israel because they created the country. We will try to preserve peace, but Israel is fighting to defend itself. With the most recent conflict, the United States has tried to calm things down, but has otherwise stayed out of it.

The only reason Israel must invade is because the Lebanese are an utter failure at dealing with Hezbollah--the true culprit in this case. Lebanon simply lacks the power or the will to fight them, so Israel must fight them instead. This is what happens when you cannot fight your own battles and they spill over into other areas.

Put yourself in their situation, you live in a poor town, the government is in shambles, you have no hospitals, nothing that is a neccesity in a normal town. In comes Hezbollah, helps your town, saves a ton of lives because of the hospital they built, teaches your children because of the schools they built. Then, Israel comes in, bombs your schools, bombs your hospitals, bombs your infrastructure. Who are you going to support?

Lebanon was part of the many attacks against Israel since 1948, Israel occupied parts of Lebanon after Lebanon attacked during the 1980s. Israel left Lebanon in 2000 because there was a peace deal with Lebanon brokered by the UN, and the only thing Lebanon needed to do in return for peace and freedom was to disarm Hezbollah, which they couldn't do, and DIDNT DO! Israel kept its promise to not attack Lebanon even though the lebanese government didn't keep its promise and allowed HEzbollah to mass on their southern border with ISrael and use LEbanon as a large ammo dump for Iranian and Syrian weapons. Syria still occupied Beirut until just a year ago, and were accused of intimidating the lebanese government into doing the will of syria, such as allowing Hezbollah to continue its arms build-up, thus preventing Lebanon from doing what it promised the UN it would do.

Therefore Hezbollah is just a tool of Iran used to impose their will on the middle east and use the Lebanese as a proxy in a broader Iranian-led war against Israel. Iran uses Hezbollah to attack Israel because if Iran used their own conventional military against ISrael, the world would cease dealing with Iran, AND the US and Israel would defeat Iran very quickly.

Also, Iran can use deniability, pretending they have nothing to do with the attacks on israel because they can claim hezbollah isn't part of Iran, even though they direct Hezbollah and give them all of their weapons along with Syria.
