Hey everybody - with all the recent Comicon craziness (when Tom's your booth neighbor, you're guaranteed a wacky time!), as well as the insanity surrounding the Broken Saints DVD launch, I haven't had time to drop by as regularly. Imagine my shock at seeing a huge honkin' banner on the front page on NG! That's almost as @#$%ed up as spotting our stuff on the shelves at Walmart, man...seriously.

Ok - maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. Rewind. For those who weren't around for the infamous two months of daily uploads back in early 2005 (hey, the series had 57 parts...don't shoot the messenger!), my name is Brooke, and I'm the creator of the animated comic series Broken Saints. Me and my partners in crime (artist Andrew West and Flash geek Ian Kirby) had a pretty good thing going over at the BS site, but it wasn't until we posted all of our stuff on Newgrounds that things really started rolling. I don't think we can ever thank Tom and the NG crew enough for their kindness, support, and cyber-hospitality...but more importantly, we've never officially thanked the thousands of YOU that have rallied around the series and openly shared your thoughts, kind words, and creative suggestions! (yes...even the haters too :) ).

People like you inspired us to work our asses off and take 3 years (and 10+ hrs!) of Flash and remaster the entire thing the right way. Better art. Better pacing. Better effects. And killer sound with the most-asked for feature from Newgrounds fans - VOICE. You guys had an effect on our work, and it was your collective voice that inspired people like FOX Home Video to take a risk and release a 4-disc Flash series to the mainstream. We're still in shock. It still doesn't seem real. But part of me hopes that this is the start of something big. Not just for us...but for NG too. And for indy creators everywhere.

If Saints does well in stores, then major studio distributors will start turning their eyes here. And they'll find a treasure trove of talent, and an infinite supply of creativity. Do you have a favorite NG series that demands attention? Hell...I know I'd cheer if work like Salad Fingers, Neurotically Yours, or There She Is got the mainstream spotlight. These - and so MANY more - deserve it!

So all we can ask is that you rally together for Broken Saints one last time at stores and rental shops everywhere. We don't see a cent, gang - that's not how the video biz rolls, sadly - but it might give us the chance to do more work in a bigger way, and also open the floodgates for your favorite Flash freaks here to get their stuff on screens everywhere. And in the end, that's what matters the most, right? We gotta give this incredible place - and the people who built it - its just rewards!

Peace and Respect...and keep on rockin' in the free world. BB

I've loved Broken Saints since I first finished watching the first chapter. That was...4 years ago? I've often considered watching the series over from start to finish, which is not an easy task considering its length. Perhaps I'll venture out and pick up a copy of the DVD and sit down with a friend and share the memorable experience with them.

Five full copies in my local video store, four checked out. That's got to count for something, right? It was right there next to the popular New Releases.

Congrats, this is one flash series I am definitely going to buy.

Thanks guys - the kind words are appreciated...and a LOT has changed since the original version went online 5 years ago.

And yeah - IGN 'reviewed' it...he raved about the set itself, but seemed to have a personal beef with me. I think Fox forced him to watch the whole thing in a day, and he was pissed. Meanwhile, the guy over at UGO frickin' raved and gave us straight A's. You never know with these damn critics LOL

I'll be picking up a copy soon. My friend, and business partner, and I are really looking forward to watching it. We got an office to get some work done and then we'll probably spend too much time watching Broken Saints. Oh well.

Hey, help me out with one thing though. How is it that FOX releasing the DVD doesn't bring in any revenue for you? That doesn't compute well. I understand they front a lot of the money, maybe all, to create the DVDs and get them into stores, but it's hard to follow where along the line it doesn't bring in any revenue for you guys. I'm not saying that money is everything, but it just seems like there should be at least a little cash involved. Can you elaborate, for those of us who don't know how the movie biz does work?

Thanks and good luck. I hope you're right and NG does start attracting "talent scouts".

-Sean

To the fellow who asked about payment from a studio distributor, it works like this:

- they offer an up front royalty fee that is used 'against' later sales - ie, they might give you 100K, but that gets subtracted from any profits later.
- chances are, you use most of your royalty paying off contractors, project debts, deferral salaries, etc, just like we did when folks worked for free for us helping to make the original DVD.
- then, once the DVD comes to stores, the distributor (in our case, FOX) gets to keep all the revenues until they 'break even' on the royalties, the packaging and production costs, the marketing plan, etc...which usually ends up being around 500K (always over inflated) for a small project like this.

So...yeah, unless this sells really well, we won't see a cent. Even if we did? It'd go right into our next project. The upside is that we signed a deal with a major distributor, which bodes well for future project investment.

Speaking of...did someone ask about some interactive fun???

That's a scarily long time to be holding a hand grenade. <=s
Pretty neat. What format? (symbols seem to say Playstation, knife waving seems to say Wii)
I would nominate myself for the whole DVD, but I still need to develop myself in many aspects. I'm actually trying to brainstorm one of those action-type saturday-morning transforming-superheroes series, though it's being crippled by my inability to draw good drawings of girls in big sweaters wearing scarfs.
If you know of other ways I can earn money for my flash skills, lemme know.

As he explained above, it's mainly because of the costs associated with making the DVD. Debts being payed off isn't exactly money in your pocket.

I bought a copy of the DVD on Amazon. I can vouch for it's awesomeness. If all you've ever seen is the series on NG, you ain't seen nothin' yet. I'm also interested as to what other series on here would make good DVDs. Hmm....

I really enjoyed Broken Saints, big thanks for your effords!
It also seems that BS opened the doors for a Cinematic Graphic Novel (I'm not sure how the style is defined) seeing as how Metal Gear Solid comics are going to get the same treatment. This could mean that we'll be seeing more of comic books and graphic novels being remastered with voice acting, sound effects and music, then released on DVDs. Just the thought of such graphic novels as The Sandman being remade with sound and movement makes me more excited than a little schoolgirl.

I'll be really looking forward to more of the projects from Broken Saints crew and try to get my hands on the DVD (ln Norway it's hard to get anything).

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys!
