Bras weren't invented because breasts are taboo; they were created to serve as a means of external support. Women with large breasts have enough trouble running and jumping with a bra on. Imagine how much their bodies would hurt if they didn't wear one.
I know, at first they were a technical support for woman. But afterwards, society evolved and breasts did became a taboo. And bras were there in a perfect moment. They then became something that has two purposes. Protecting a womans breasts from gravity, and protecting a womans breasts from looks.
Also, the bras like you see today didn't exist until the early 1900s and took a while before they gained popularity. My grandmother grew up in the 30s and many women back then still didn't wear bras.
Yes, they didn`t exist till the early 1900s. And as far as I know, breasts were not a taboo till the 40s.
